    What a day.

Somerset wrapped-up a win over Durham inside two days with Jack Leach taking six wickets in the second innings while the leaders Surrey have been frustrated by the weather at Yorkshire.

Lyndon James made a double hundred for Notts but their game with Hampshire already looks set for a stalemate.

In Division Two, Rehan Ahmed followed up his century for the leaders Leicestershire with six wickets against Derbyshire.

Middlesex produced three centurions in taking control against Northants at Northwood.

    Middlesex 625-8 dec v Northants 126-4 - Northants trail by 499

Three centurions and two half-centurions tells you that Middlesex probably posted a big old score.

Max Holden hit the biggest individual total with 151, with Kane Williamson and Leus du Plooy also grabbing tons before Middlesex declared on 625-8 at tea.

Northants started fairly well before losing four wickets by the close and will start tomorrow a demoralising 499 runs behind Middlesex.

  4. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 23 July

    Warwickshire 184 v Worcestershire 333 & 31-0

Worcestershire hold all the aces at the halfway stage of this west Midlands derby.

Ethan Brookes hit a superb career-best 140 to get the Pears to a very competitive 333 and that score got better as the day went on.

Khurram Shahzad ripped through Warwickshire's batting to claim 6-42 as the Bears were dismissed for 184.

Gareth Roderick and Jake Libby have seen it through 17 overs to the close and the Pears will resume tomorrow with a lead of 180.

  5. Close of play at Utilita Bowlpublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 23 July

    Hants 80-0 v Notts 578-8d

Lyndon James will remember today for a long time.

With his parents watching the 26-year-old cracked a maiden championship double hundred to help put Notts in control.

His effort overshadowed an entertaining century from Jack Haynes and Brett Hutton's 71.

Hutton will sit out the remaining two days as he will be replaced by Josh Tongue who has been released from the England squad.

Joe Weatherley (43*) and Fletcha Middleton (34*) helped Hampshire get through unscathed at the close but they have a lot of batting to do to save this one.

    Warwickshire 184 v Worcestershire 333 & 28-0

Gareth Roderick helps himself to a welcome three runs off Tazeem Ali's penultimate over of the day.

Worcestershire are doing their best to get through to stumps wicketless in this second knock.

    Hants 75-0 v Notts 578-8d

Two overs remain and Joe Weatherley (43*) and Fletcha Middleton (29*) have done a good job for their side so far.

The Hampshire batting has been fragile to say the least this season so the coaching staff and members will be pleased to see this effort.

His brother Rehan has had a good day in taking six wickets for Leicestershire.

Now Farhan is coming on to bowl for Notts.

Can he make it a special day for the Ahmed family by breaking this opening partnership?

  9. 'An incredible surface' - Somerset head coach Kerrpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 23 July

    Somerset (250 & 89-5) beat Durham (145 & 190) by five wickets

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr insists that it was top-quality bowling from Jack Leach and Craig Overton that made the biggest difference in their five-wicket win over Durham.

Overton took 6-23 yesterday and Leach 6-63 today as Somerset wrapped up victory inside five sessions.

It has led to some question marks over the quality of the pitch, but Kerr was adamant after watching 674 runs scored in that time.

“There has been a lot of noise surrounding the pitch, but I thought it was an incredible surface," said Kerr.

"You can’t see 400 runs scored in a day as happened yesterday and then complain about the wicket.

“We have to find a way of getting results here and because there has been so much cricket at the ground this year we had to prepare a used pitch.

"Craig and Jack exploited any help in it because they are top quality bowlers.”

    Hants 69-0 v Notts 578-8d

We have five overs remaining in the day.

I wouldn't call this entertaining stuff.

It's quite attritional from Hampshire but survival is the name of the game.

  11. Close of play at Cheltenhampublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 23 July

    Gloucestershire 179-1 v Lancashire 557

The end of day two at Cheltenham sees Ben Charlesworth walk off on 104 and Joe Phillips 60 as this pair have put on an unbroken 159 after the early loss of Cameron Bancroft.

But it has been a batter's paradise today.

Earlier Chris Green and Tom Hartley hit their highest first-class scores of 160 and 130 respectively in a club-record ninth-wicket stand of 212 on their way to a total of 557.

But with 446 runs scored for five wickets, it's no doubt that bat has driven ball into the dirt.

  12. 100 up for Northantspublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 23 July

    Middlesex 625-8 dec v Northants 105-3

Aadi Sharma and George Bartlett are attempting to guide Northants to the close without any further damage.

Their side are three down with just over 100 on the board and are still a long way behind Middlesex in this match.

  13. Close of play at Hovepublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 23 July

    Sussex 204 v Essex 475-9

Centuries from Jordan Cox and Matt Critchley have seen Essex take control of this match with two days still remaining.

Some indifferent bowling from Sussex didn't help their case although Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Gurinder Sandhu have taken three wickets each.

    Essex lead by 271 runs.

  14. Postpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 23 July

    Warwickshire 184 v Worcestershire 333 & 16-0

It's pretty low-key stuff at Edgbaston at the moment.

Jake Libby has 13 and opening partner Gareth Roderick just three as the Pears have edged to 16-0 off 10 overs.

It has edged their lead to 165, but the game is not really advancing anywhere fast.

  15. Bad light stops playpublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 23 July

Another chat between Rob Bailey and Mark Newell and we are going off.

It is murky to say the least.

  16. dropped catch

    Sussex 204 v Essex 475-9

The umpires have come together for a chat - it is very, very dark even with the floodlights on.

We carry on and Henry Crocombe drops a difficult caught-and-bowled chance offered by Simon Harmer.

  17. Postpublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 23 July

    Sussex 204 v Essex 475-9

Simon Harmer cracks successive boundaries off Gurinder Sandhu to send the gulls scattering at Hove.

We still have 10 overs remaining and Sussex could yet have a tricky period to negotiate with the bat.

Khaleel Ahmed isn't going to play for time and he's caught by Gurinder Sandhu.

  19. 150 runs

150 partnershippublished at 18:13 British Summer Time 23 July

    Gloucestershire 170-1 v Lancashire 557

A cracking swivel pull shot from Joe Phillips beats Josh Bohannon out in the deep on the boundary and these four runs take the partnership to 150.

Batting looks all very comfortable on day two at Cheltenham for Phillips and Ben Charlesworth.

    Derbys 189 v Leics 398

    A day for the bowlers.

Peter Handscomb completed his century this morning having been 99 not out overnight but from that point the bowlers took centre stage.

Luis Reece mopped up the Leicestershire innings with 6-56 as the Division Two leaders lost their last five wickets for 10 runs.

But Derbyshire then collapsed themselves as they lost nine wickets for 75 runs after a century stand between Harry Came (56) and Caleb Jewell (54) for the second wicket.

Rehan Ahmed finishes with career-best figures of 6-51 from 20 overs.

Leicestershire will surely wrap up this one with two days still to go and take a firm hold of top spot.
