    Hants v Notts 578-8

Lyndon James flicks the ball away for four runs, takes off his helmet and soaks up the applause from those inside Utilita Bowl.

A few Hampshire players go across to congratulate him but he won't be adding any more to his 203 not out as Nottinghamshire declare.

What an innings from Lyndon James.

He gets to his maiden first class double hundred.

James does it in 236 balls with 20 fours and eight sixes.

It's been a pretty special effort from the 26-year-old who came in at number seven.

Hampshire haven't helped themselves by dropping him twice.

  3. Middlesex declarepublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 23 July

    Middlesex 625-8 dec v Northants 2-0

Middlesex did indeed declare during the tea interval as we suspected they might.

A hefty 625 was enough for Leus du Plooy to feel confident enough to send Northants in for the evening session.

  4. 'Webster dismissal drops Bears back into trouble'published at 16:27 British Summer Time 23 July

    Warwickshire 144-6 v Worcestershire 333

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM commentator

Bertie Foreman was sent out on loan by Sussex to Worcestershire for just two weeks.

That’s not long to make a lasting impression, but if Worcestershire go on to win this derby – and revive their hopes of staying in Division One – it might be that his first over will stick in the memory.

Beau Webster was leading Warwickshire’s repair job, rebuilding their innings after it was ruined by Khurram Shahzad’s opening spell, and had continued his recent positive batting form with a steady half-century, studded with punchy strokes off the back foot.

Foreman appeared for his first over, after Webster and Kai Smith had put together nearly 50 for the sixth wicket.

Immediately, Webster decided to take on the young off-spinner, but his first attempt to charge forward ended with him smearing the ball back along the ground to the bowler. Undeterred, he set off again, hitting against the spin, and looped a drive straight to mid-off.

That dismissal dropped the Bears back into serious trouble. Earlier in the afternoon, Shahzad had claimed his fourth wicket, Zen Malik edging low to slip, before Ed Barnard drilled a drive straight back into Adam Finch’s chest.

Smith saw them to tea with Corey Rocchiccioli, but Warwickshire are still 40 short of avoiding the follow-on.

You just can't keep Rehan Ahmed out of this game.

He pins Caleb Jewell in front for this third wicket of the innings.

  6. 'Essex's best performance of the season'published at 16:23 British Summer Time 23 July

    Tea: Sussex 204 v Essex 451-7

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Essex

A superb partnership of 194 between Jordan Cox and Matt Critchley, an Essex fifth wicket record against Sussex, has put the visitors in a dominant position at tea on the second day.

Cox’s innings of 132 was a sublime reminder of why he continues to be on the England radar. In this form it would be no surprise if he is in both the September limited-overs and Ashes squads.

Critchley struck five sixes over mid-wicket in his 123 before not making his ground when Fynn Hudson- Prentice threw from mid-on.

Michael Pepper, who added 85 with Critchley, was unbeaten on 44 when Essex reached tea with a lead of 247.

A shower will delay the resumption and it looks gloomy. Essex may feel that the chance of overs at Sussex tonight provides an opportunity.

This has been Essex’s best performance of the season. If they can close it out with a win, it will ease their relegation fears and get other teams involved.

    Yorkshire 376-5 v Surrey

The covers are now on across most of the outfield at North Marine Road.

The prospect of play at any point today must be in some doubt.

It's a miserable sight to be honest, as the rain comes down. Not much fun for anyone wanting to watch cricket or anyone on holiday in Scarborough this week.

Good luck trying to entertain the kids in this weather!

  9. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 23 July

    Sussex 204 v Essex 451-7

We will not be resuming on time after the tea interval at Hove.

It's raining and the covers are on - it's all very gloomy both weather-wise and on the field for the home side.

Essex will be desperate to get back out there.

  10. 'Hero of the day was Leach'published at 16:14 British Summer Time 23 July

    Result: Somerset (250 & 89-5) beat Durham (145 & 190) by five wickets

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Somerset take 20 points from this County Championship match and will go up to 137 points. Durham take three bowling points, they go on to 111 points.

The hero of the day was Jack Leach with 6-63 and the hero of the hour is undoubtedly Tom Banton who finishes with 33 not out having taken this run chase by the scruff of the neck and carrying Somerset home.

Somerset for the County Championship is still a long shot but they've kept themselves in the race with this five-wicket victory.

  11. Tea at Edgbastonpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 23 July

    Warwickshire 144-6 v Worcestershire 333

Warwickshire have been struggling with the bat in their response to Worcestershire's 333.

Beau Webster reached a half-century before attempting a big six and only finding the mid-off fielder.

Kai Smith and Corey Rocchiccioli are the men currently tasked with the rebuilding job.

  12. Tea at Middlesexpublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 23 July

    Middlesex 625-8 v Northants

No sign of a declaration yet from Middlesex.

Skipper Leus du Plooy reached his century just before the interval so he might be pondering on that decision now.

It's been hard work for Northants as Middlesex have piled on the runs.

  13. Tea at Cheltenhampublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 23 July

    Gloucestershire 59-1 v Lancashire 557

Ben Charlesworth and Joe Phillips make it to tea with a partnership of 39 after Jimmy Anderson dismissed Cameron Bancroft.

    The deficit is only 498.

Expect a long bowl after tea from Lancashire centurions Chris Green and Tom Hartley.

Jack Leach took 6-63 in Durham's second innings

So despite a couple of wobbles in the chase, Somerset complete a five-wicket win inside five sessions of cricket.

Five-wicket hauls from Craig Overton and Jack Leach in each innings did the bulk of the damage while Tom Lammonby's first innings 89 was the highest score of the match.

They take 20 points and will watch with interest over the next two days how the three teams above them at the start of the week get on.

Durham begin the long journey home with three points to their name.

However, in a week when the Kookaburra ball is being used and we are seeing scores of 400 and 500 across the country, a match that is already done and dusted is bound to raise some questions.

  15. Tea at Derbypublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 23 July

    Derbys 123-3 v Leics 398

Two wickets for Leicestershire and Rehan Ahmed towards the end of the afternoon session may just have opened up things for the Division Two leaders against their nearest challengers.

That's after Harry Came (55) and Caleb Jewell (53*) had shared a century stand for the second wicket.

  16. Tea at Hovepublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 23 July

    Sussex 204 v Essex 451-7

Centuries for Jordan Cox and Matt Critchley have worked Essex into a winning position.

Sussex have bowled poorly - too many four balls and no consistency in line and length.

Michael Pepper is still there on 44 not out and we can expect some fireworks after the break.

Lyndon James is left dangling tantalisingly on 197 not out as tea is called.

He is three runs short of a maiden first class double hundred.

His previous best was 164 not out.

Brett Hutton made an entertaining 71 and the less said about the Hampshire bowling and fielding (four catches dropped) the better.

    Middlesex 620-8 v Northants

That's a third century of the Middlesex innings as captain Leus du Plooy joins Max Holden and Kane Williamson in the 100 club.

Surely that's enough runs for Middlesex now?!
