50 for Joe Phillipspublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 23 July

    Gloucestershire 165-1 v Lancashire 557

Joe Phillips steers one out to cover point off Jack Blatherwick and jogs through for the single to bring up his 50.

    It's a third first-class half-century for the Cornish batter.

The 21-year-old has taken 111 balls but he's played a fine foil behind the fine strokes of Ben Charlesworth at the other end.

  2. Derbyshire 189 all outpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 23 July

    Morley c Patel b Kimber 1 (Derbys 189 v Leics 398)

That's pretty ordinary stuff from the home side.

Jack Morley is the last man out to Louis Kimber.

Derbyshire lost nine wickets for 75 runs after a century stand between Harry Came (56) and Caleb Jewell (54) for the second wicket.

Rehan Ahmed finishes with career-best figures of 6-51 from 20 overs.

  3. Close of play at Sophia Gardenspublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 23 July

    Glamorgan 327 v Kent 155 & 106-1 - Kent trail by 66

A much better second innings than the first so far for Kent who make it to the end of day two on 106-1.

Jaydn Denly was the only casualty as the visitors negotiated 35 overs, with Ben Compton (38*) and Chris Benjamin (22*) now taking a well-earned rest before coming back tomorrow morning.

Glamorgan remain in a strong position after posting 327 earlier on and will hope to grab a few early scalps tomorrow to snuff out any Kent hopes of a comeback.

  4. 'Early finish not good for county cricket' - Onionspublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 23 July

    Somerset (250 & 89-5) beat Durham (145 & 190) by five wickets

No doubt what was the hot topic after Somerset beat Durham inside five sessions earlier today - the state of the Taunton pitch.

22 of the 35 wickets to fall in the match were to spin, with all 13 today and the last 18 in the match all going to slow bowlers.

Jack Leach claimed 6-63 as Durham were bowled out for 190 in the second innings while Callum Parkinson claimed 4-39 as Somerset lost five wickets in their pursuit of 86.

But it left Durham bowling coach Graham Onions expressing some unease about what he had witnessed.

“The pitch helped the bowlers, but we have to be honest with ourselves and admit that looking back we could have done better with some of our dismissals," said Onions.

“I’m pleased for Callum Parkinson today as I was for George Drissell yesterday.

"We knew spin would play a big part in the match and, having been out of the team, Parky has worked really hard to put himself back in the frame.

“My take on the pitch is that there was excessive turn. The bottom line is that it is day one and a half and the game is over, which is not good for county cricket.

"Turn on days three and four is okay and it’s a shame because Jack Leach is a fine bowler capable of taking wickets on flat pitches.”

    This is about survival.

The floodlights are on to try to help things at gloomy Hove.

The gulls are also making things difficult for the fielders - they know it's that time of day when people are leaving and there might be a few scraps of food left around.

Khaleel Ahmed hits a six for EssexImage source, Rex Features

Khaleel Ahmed is the new man in for Essex and he promptly dumps the second ball he receives into the crowd.

The ball is thrown back and is now being examined by the umpires - we'll need a replacement.

  8. wicket

    Pepper c Simpson b Hudson-Prentice 44 (Sussex 204 v Essex 451-8)

The long break does for Michael Pepper.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice finds a good line and Pepper feathers an edge behind.

A second wicket for the Sussex all-rounder.

  9. 100 runs

100 for Ben Charlesworthpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 23 July

    Gloucestershire 155-1 v Lancashire 557

We have a fourth Cheltenham centurion this game and a first for Gloucestershire.

An emphatic drive down the ground from Ben Charlesworth off Chris Green takes him to 98 and the very next ball, he hits a shorter ball into the offside and runs hard for two.

That is his second ton of the summer and it's come off just 122 balls.

All very nice stuff in picturesque surroundings.

    Sussex 204 v Essex 451-7

We are back out at Hove.

We have 16 overs to get through but the light isn't great.

If you're Sussex you're not going to be bowling your spinners!

Tickner run out (Trevaskis) 0 (Derbys 188-9 v Leics 398)

    Nice one lads!

You've lost four wickets for 14 runs so why not shoot yourselves further in the foot?

Derbyshire have done just that as Blair Tickner is run out without scoring and Liam Trevaskis takes the plaudits for the home side.

  12. dropped catch

Dropped catch?published at 17:47 British Summer Time 23 July

    Hants 39-0 v Notts 578-8d

Will add a question mark to that one because Fletcha Middleton edges one and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne flings himself at it but can't hold on.

The reaction may also suggest it might not quite have carried.

The bowler was Brett Hutton - he scored 71 earlier in the day but won't be involved tomorrow.

In case you hadn't heard he'll be replaced by Josh Tongue who has been released by the England camp to travel down to Utilita Bowl.

    Strange game cricket sometimes...

  13. wicket

    Guest c Patel b Trevaskis 21 (Derbys 187-8 v Leics 398)

Shock news, it's a wicket and Rehan Ahmed hasn't taken it.

    Step forward Liam Trevaskis.

Brooke Guest has done his best to hold things together for Derbyshire but he nicks one to Rishi Patel at slip and trudges off.

  14. Play to resume at Hovepublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 23 July

    Sussex 204 v Essex 451-7

Right, all the covers are off at Hove and it's not raining.

The umpires Rob Bailey and Mark Newell have had a good look.

We will resume at 17:50 BST with 16 overs to be bowled.

  15. wicket

WARWICKSHIRE ALL OUT FOR 184published at 17:35 British Summer Time 23 July

    Hannon-Dalby c Foreman b Finch 0 (Warwickshire 184 all out v Worcestershire 333)

Ollie Hannon-Dalby is one of county cricket's great number 11s and he shows why.

His fourth ball from Adam Finch turns out to be a low full toss, which OHD succeeds only in knocking into the hands of Bertie Foreman in the offside.

A duck and now the big man will have to get his bowling boots on as Worcestershire bat again with a lead of 149.

Khurram Shahzad the undoubted star with 6-42.

  16. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 23 July

    Smith c Roderick b Finch 68 (Warwickshire 184-9 v Worcestershire 333)

Kai Smith goes for one big shot too many and his innings is ended.

Adam Finch follows him with the short ball which Smith only gloves behind to his opposite number Gareth Roderick.

Smith has got Warwickshire past the follow-on, but they are still a long way behind in this match.

  17. Division Two round-uppublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 23 July

    #bbccricket

Kent have started encouragingly in their second innings, losing just the wicket of Jaydn Denly (38) with 89 runs on the board.

Ben Compton and Chris Benjamin are doing their best to gnaw into Glamorgan's lead which currently stands at 83.

It's a similar story for Northants who are on the back foot against Middlesex. They are 60-1 having lost Ricardo Vasconcelos (19) leaving Lewis McManus and Aadi Sharma at the crease as we enter the closing stages of the day's play.

  18. Bears avoid follow-onpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 23 July

    Warwickshire 184-8 v Worcestershire 333

Kai Smith does a fine job of steering the Bears beyond the follow-on target.

He hooks Tom Taylor for a six into the Hollies, ramps the next ball for four and guides one into the offside for a single.

11 runs in three balls and job done. Although it is far from done with his side still trailing by 149 runs.

Successive fours for Ben Charlesworth off Jimmy Anderson.

The first is through midwicket and the second is driven beautifully square.

Lovely stuff from Charlesworth as he is now 15 away from a century.
