Fynn Hudson-Prentice said he was happy to put his hand up to help Sussex into a strong position going into day three at Hove given a growing injury list to the county’s front rank seamers.

With Sean Hunt and Jayden Seales missing through injury and Ollie Robinson struggling with a left leg problem, it was fortunate that Hudson-Prentice was on the money on Saturday taking 5-40.

“I bowled nicely today but the pitch has got quite a bit in it for the seamers. It was good, though, that it fell to me to get the five-wicket haul. I think I bowl better with that extra responsibility on me," he said.

Worcestershire go into day three struggling to contain the hosts’ growing lead and assistant coach Kadeer Ali admitted they were behind after an inadequate batting performance

He said: "At 97 for four we thought we were in position and perhaps just one good partnership away from getting close to their first innings score but we lost four wickets in quick succession and that knocked us back."

It was a memorable day for Zen Malik yesterday as the Warwickshire batter hit a maiden century in only his second first-class game.

Malik made 105 not out in an unbroken stand of 215 with Ed Barnard (177) before Alex Davies made the declaration to leave Surrey with seven sessions of batting to avoid defeat.

"Last week was a great win for us, beating a very strong Yorkshire side, and to contribute to that win in conditions that were very challenging was a great confidence-booster for me and I'm very happy to have followed it up with a century," he said.

"Davo told me I was going to move down the order because of the strengthened batting so I just had to make sure that I took my opportunity when it arrived."

Marcus Harris has continued his irresistible form with the bat but labelled his first innings century against Northants as his toughest of the season so far.

The Australian overseas signing has three hundreds in nine innings but his 121 at Wantage Road as Lancashire battled to a 38-run first innings advantage proved hard going.

“It’s definitely my most hard-fought century this season. But they're probably the best ones when you make them in tough conditions,” he said.

With Northants leading by 102 with four wickets left in the tank, Harris also believes a Lancashire win is within reach.

“If we can absorb some pressure, start well with the ball, and then the same again with the bat, I'll back us to hopefully be able to get over the line,” he said.

Northants seamer Liam Guthrie understandably took the opposing line insisting the hosts have a chance of setting a competitive final innings chase.

“Hopefully we can get ourselves to a fighting score in the fourth innings. I mean, 200 plus would be nice, but we'll see what the batters and the bowlers can do in the morning," he said.

Kent are facing the almost certain prospect of having to follow on after a disappointing batting display in reply to Glamorgan's big first-innings total at the Spitfire Ground.

They will resume 393 in arrears and head coach Adam Hollioake admitted his side had not bowled at their best as Ben Kellaway hit an unbeaten 181 for the Welsh county.

"It's definitely a new-ball wicket but we didn't bowl well with either of the two new balls we had, while they've got their length right," he told BBC Radio Kent.

"Chris Benjamin [68 not out] showed that if you dig in and show a bit of resilience then you can bat out there, so we have to try to minimise this deficit and take time out of the game."

Despite the words 'scattered showers' in the BBC Weather summary, the likely location of them means our six games should be ok.

"Today, the south-west will have variable cloud and scattered showers, some of which heavy and thundery.... but dry with sunshine elsewhere."
