There's so many variables in this game of cricket, nothing is going on for a while.

You change the ball, you change the game.

The mood has changed at Trent Bridge and Alzarri Joseph, pumped up after the wicket, now zips one past Joe Root.

Definitely a bit of extra bounce there. Was that the new ball? The pitch? Or just Joseph bending his back a bit more?

Either way, Root gets off the mark next ball with a single and Ben Duckett then flat-bats one over Joseph's head and gets two.

This is what I was hoping would happen with that break that we had, we got England a little bit unsettled with a lot of breaks.

We needed a couple of good overs, we pushed them out of their comfort zone and this time the catch was held.

The change of ball has brought about success immediately.

Taken at gully and the West Indies have got an important wicket here.

    Pope c Sinclair b A Joseph 51 (Eng 127-2)

First delivery with the changed ball and Alzarri Joseph strikes.

It was full from the Windies fast bowler, Ollie Pope drove at it and the ball carries to Kevin Sinclair in the gully.

That break in play does the trick for the tourists. I'm not sure whether the ball did a whole lot different to the previous one but it was a slightly looser shot from Pope and it costs him his wicket.

It was only a matter of time. West Indies ask for the ball to be changed, it doesn't go through the rings as it's supposed to, and it will be changed.

    Another brief delay.

Duckett bisecting the slip field, beautifully done and he gets the boundary.

It doesn't matter how many fielders the West Indies put there, Ben Duckett will still find a way to get the ball past gully and down to third man.

He plays late and with soft hands to get it fine of Jason Holder on this occasion, and is rewarded with four.

That was a good delivery from Joseph, good to see that the West Indies are trying something different.

  10. Eng 119-1published at 24 overs

Super ball from Alzarri Joseph and it snakes past Ben Duckett's outside edge.

That was fuller and a bit straighter than the previous couple of deliveries as West Indies persist with that tightly packed gully region to the England opener.

Another fuller, straighter delivery is punched back down the ground by Duckett for a single.

50 for Ollie Popepublished at 23.1 overs

    Eng 118-1

Ollie Pope flicks the ball out to deep backwards square for a single - and that's his 13th Test fifty.

After a ton in the first innings, he's batted very nicely so far in the second as well.

The half-century comes up from 64 balls with six boundaries.

Ollie Pope mistimes a pull shot into the leg side to get England up and running again with a single.

West Indies then pack the field square and just behind on the off side when Ben Duckett comes on strike.

It doesn't prevent the left-hander trying to play in that area as Jayden Seales hangs the ball outside off. But he can't pierce the in-field, just one from the over.

Everybody ready? Good, we're all set to start the evening session about 10 or 11 minutes later than scheduled.

That will be added on at the end of the day.

The boredom hasn't set in just yet and, thankfully, just before Mike begins dismantling his Corby Trouser Press, it looks like we're going to get some cricket.

The cover is coming off and Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope are poised and ready to walk out to the middle.

Unfortunately, my first duty is to inform you that play is not going to start on time after tea.

The players are gather on the boundary edge but the umpires are in the middle, looking up at the skies and then call for the cover to be brought on.

If it is raining then it is very light so hopefully this is just the briefest of delays.

    Thanks, Mike. I think...

I fear I may not be able to provide quite so many references to BBC satirical shows from the 90s.

Time for a change at the live texter's desk. How to describe the man coming in?

Can I sum him up in a word? No.

    A sound? Wooooooorgh.

    It's Sam Drury.
