Matthew Short has brought back a semblance of control for Australia.

  2. Eng 59-1published at 10 overs

Fine margins for that Phil Salt wicket, then.

Australia turn to spin for the first time today in the form of Matthew Short with both Will Jacks and Ben Duckett initially happy to take a look.

Duckett skips down to Short's final delivery but hits the ball into his own foot.

A single apiece off the over

  3. Eng 57-1published at 9 overs

Will Jacks is the new batter for England and he starts with a couple of dots from Sean Abbott before a lesser spotted back foot no-ball from the Australia seamer.

Abbott bowls a wide giving Jacks a second bite of the cherry at the free hit and he crashes a bottom-handed wallop through long-on.

Ben Dwarshuis' delivery to dismiss Phil Salt kept 40 cm lower than other deliveries on a similar length so far this afternoon.

Salt is looking at the pitch and is asking Ben Duckett if it kept low but for me, he was cramped up. It just skidded on slightly and Salt got himself in an awkward position.

    Salt b Dwarshuis 17 (Eng 48-1)

Ben Dwarshuis, has his first ODI wicket and punches the air in delight.

A curious dismissal as Phil Salt looks to give himself room, only to see the ball nip back in slightly to hit his leg stump.

Salt looks rather disdainfully at the pitch before trudging off. It did keep a fraction low in his defence, but the Aussie left-armer did well to cramp him for room.

Ben Duckett has a good record in his seven previous List A outings at Trent Bridge, his home venue. 270 runs at 38.57 with an impressive 116 strike-rate.

  8. Eng 46-0published at 7 overs

This is more like it from Ben Duckett who has got his eye in against Sean Abbott.and plunders 16 from the over.

First Duckett drills a full one straight down the ground then he quickly picks up the length of one dragged down by Abbott and whips it square for four.

Duckett shows his intent to skip down the wicket and pulls through mid-wicket for four off the penultimate ball of the over, then repeats the feat off the last albeit from inside his crease.

It's been a good battle between bat and ball. We're so used to the pitch being so up and down the batters can hit right through it but you need a technique here to score runs.

  10. Eng 30-0published at 6 overs

Left-armer Ben Dwarshuis, who is making his ODI debut today, bowls well to his field.

Phil Salt picks up a couple with a flick off his pads then finishes the over with a rather fortuitous inside edge which cannons down but misses his leg stump and races away for four.

What is that old cricket expression? It's not how, it's how many...

It's been well remarked upon that this is very much a 'new' England team.

But to give you an idea of just how inexperienced this group is, the Sky commentators have just mentioned that the highest ODI run-scorer in the England squad is number 11 Adil Rashid.

At which point I'm obligated to tell you that Rashid does have 10 first-class hundreds and hits the ball to unusual areas.

  12. Eng 23-0published at 5 overs

Ben Duckett, never one to hang around, thumps Sean Abbott through the covers to pick up his first four of the match off the Aussie quick's second delivery. That will give the England opener some confidence.

Abbott allowed Duckett to free his arms with that shot and responds by tightening his line with three dots. Duckett picks up three off the final ball of the over with a back foot punch.

A solid rather spectacular start by England.

  13. Eng 15-0published at 4 overs

Another tidy over from Ben Dwarshuis as this England opening pair continue to play relatively watchfully.

A proactive captaincy change from Mitchell Marsh as he whips Aaron Hardie out the attack and replaces him with Sean Abbott.

Ever wondered what it'd be like if Steven Finn was an X-Factor judge and England's newest stars were invited to form a new boyband at the judges' houses stage? Wonder no more.

This video, where Finn meets Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, John Turner and Dan Mousley, is a good watch.

Turner, dubbed the new Glenn McGrath by some, talks about seeing Jofra Archer bowl for the first time: "He makes it look so easy it's almost annoying," he said.

    Have a watch...

You would not pick this as your full strength Australia attack.

Travis Head is the only surviving member of the Australia side hit for a world-record score here.

  16. Eng 11-0published at 3 overs

Aaron Hardie has been relatively on the money so far, showing good control of his line and length and is finding a little bit of swing.

He sends down another tight over but as soon as that bit of movement dissipates expect England's openers to go after him.

  19. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

Boom. Phil Salt crunches a drive through the covers for four to strike England's first boundary as he Ben Dwarshuis' fourth delivery.

    That was clinically dispatched.

It is a good move to put Ben Duckett to the top of the order. He has the skill level to work balls into gaps.

Both teams, as you would find in this modern era, have lots of depth. I don't think England will get 498 again but I expect big scores today.
