At 104-6 it looked like a matter of when not if Essex would be batting today but these two batters have put their side in a strong position.

Barnard was dropped behind the wicket early in his innings but having survived just needed someone to stay with him and he found a willing ally in Burgess who at times outscored his partner.

Having performed so well up to lunch the Essex attack looked blunt for much of the afternoon and evening with even the new ball failing to threaten Barnard and Burgess who will return tomorrow morning having rescued their side from potential disaster.

Worcestershire won the toss, choosing to bowl first and the team would've been delighted to reduce the hosts to 15-4 in the first half hour of play in seaming and swinging conditions.

But Surrey were rescued with a partnership of 148 between Dan Lawrence (84) and Ollie Pope - who made 63.

That's by far the biggest stand in the game. The second highest to date is 58 between Matthew Waite and Pears captain Brett D'Oliveira.

Dan Worrall bowled a superb spell and has 3-17 while Kemar Roach took two wickets in one over to dislodge Matthew Waite and Nathan Smith.

D'Oliveira survived on 22 and will need to marshal the tail as best he can tomorrow morning.

A lead of 100 looks daunting indeed in this game.
