AFC Telford United: 'Our feet are on the floor', says Liam Watson

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson says his team are not getting over excited after returning to the top of Conference North.

Saturday's thumping 4-0 victory over Oxford City at the Bucks Head lifted Telford back in front of North Ferriby United, who lost at Guiseley.

Telford have now gone two points clear with eight matches left, but Watson warns there is still much work to do.

"Our feet are on the floor," Watson told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"There's a lot of hard work to be done but it's another game chalked off and now we move on to the next one.

"It was the best performance we've given this season at home. Everyone looked good on the ball. Everyone was doing the right things."

In the first-ever meeting between the two sides, Telford did all the hard work before the break, scoring all four goals in the first half to notch their seventh straight win.

Shaun Whalley pounced on a loose pass to score the first from 10 yards on 12 minutes before Andy Owens converted Andy Farrell's cross from close range to add the second on 18 minutes.

Whalley added his second with a curler five minutes prior to the break, before then winning a 42nd-minute penalty.

After being brought down by City goalkeeper Matthew Bulman, Farrell's spot-kick wrapped up the scoring.

Telford, relegated to Conference North a year ago after going a record 30 games without a win, are now in pole position to return to the Conference Premier.

They are back in action at Leamington on Saturday, 29 March, by which time they may have been replaced on top again by nearest rivals North Ferriby if they win at bottom club Workington on Tuesday night.
