It's safe to say Tottenham have struggled to click in attack in the Champions League this season.

While Thomas Frank's side have scored 14 goals in eight Premier League games, the picture is different in Europe where they have only found the back of the net thrice in three games.

Dominic Solanke (16 goals), James Maddison (12), Son Heung-min (11) and Dejan Kulusevski (10) made up Ange Postecoglou's Spurs attack last season with them scoring a combined 49 goals in all competitions in 2024-25.

With three of the four out injured and captain Son leaving for MLS side Los Angeles FC, they have a whole-new frontline going into the season, so Tottenham's struggles are not perhaps a surprise.

Richarlison and 20-year-old Wilson Odobert along with new signings Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simmons have led their attack this season.

With Solanke expected to return some time next month, Frank will hope the addition of the striker to his attack would help improve the fortunes of the side at home and in Europe.

Frank's start has been OK. I'm not sure Spurs are any better defensively or in attack. For this Spurs fan they are dull to watch. Long throws are not my Spurs. Managers need time though so hope he gets it.

Tottenham's lack of cutting-edge against Monaco isn't an outlier.

Since Thomas Frank has arrived at the helm, Spurs have really struggled with regard to creativity.

According to Opta, in Tottenham's 11 games in both the Premier League and Champions League so far, they have only posted an xG of more than 1.5 once - the season opener against Burnley (2.32).

On six occasions they've failed to reach an xG of 1 with the real standout being the measly 0.18 they mustered at home to Bournemouth at the end of August.

It may just be a case of teething problems due to a whole new front four but whatever the case, Frank needs to find a spark to ignite his frontline.

Simply needs creativity in midfield which is very lacking. And Richarlison is not a Premier League level striker.

    Dino, London

Zero creativity. Tel, Odobert, Richarlison, Solanke. None capable of scoring. Last 3rd is big issue!

D - The team selection and substitutions are inconsistent. Perhaps he sees something in training we don’t, or players are simply off form. Either way, the issues look tactical and mental — slow decisions, lapses in focus, and a lack of cohesion. Kudus and Palinha have been a positive.

    Carl, Essex

D+ Yes we are more structured and harder to beat but so little flair and goals in the side. Results/displays at home are awful. Kudus and Palhinha have been fantastic acquisitions but jury still out on other signings. Must improve or please get Pochettino back after World Cup.

We're all excited to see what Thomas Frank can do at Spurs.

He has taken a steer to make it a more sensible looking group. They don't look 'Spursy' under Frank, they look a little bit more settled.

People will sneer at last night's result, but Monaco are a tough nut to crack. They haven't been beaten yet at home this season and it's actually not a very pleasant place to play football.

If you draw your away games and win your homes games you're going to be fine.

  8. Thumb vote - Ange or Frank?published at 14:49 BST

Oh I am LOVING these dramatic contrasting opinions from you Spurs fans.

Shall we have a thumb vote to settle it?

Who would you rather have as your manager right now if it was up to YOU?

Thumbs up for Ange Postecoglou, thumbs down for Thomas Frank.

B - Very happy with Frank, because funnily enough, I enjoy not losing week after week. We are far from the finished article, but he's been at the club for 13 games. Meanwhile, he's working with mostly bang-average forwards, plus he's missing Kulusevski and Maddison.

    Dan, Newmarket

B Doing ok with what he’s got. There’s no Son/Kane anymore and too many young or average players in this team. It’s another transition year. Franks needs to over perform with the current players and hope the new owners put their money where their mouth is in the summer.

Have to say I'm not inspired but it's early days. I'd take Ange back tomorrow. Sorry.

    Nigel, South Molton

Ange finished 5th after losing the best player in the prem Kane before worst injury crisis ever for spells he couldn't pick Romero, Van De Ven, Son, Vicario, Kulusevski (Spurs best player), Udogie, Odobert, Richarlison, etc. Frank won't finish higher than 7th & he definitely won't win a trophy. Bosh.

  11. Spurs underwhelming but unbeaten on the roadpublished at 14:37 BST

Tottenham's underwhelming display in Monaco was their second straight draw away from home in this season's Champions League.

His side are unbeaten in their opening three games of the competition and Spurs have only managed that once before in 2017-18.

In fact, they have remained unbeaten in away games since Thomas Frank took charge at the start of the season.

They defeated Manchester City 2-0 in their first away game of the Premier League season in August. They then held Brighton 2-2 on the road before a 3-0 win at West Ham.

Their latest win in the league also came away - against Leeds United earlier this month.

They also held European champions Paris St-Germain to a 2-2 draw in regulation time but lost the Uefa Super Cup on penalties in the season opener.

    Tottenham's away results this season:

    • 23 Aug - Man City 0-2 Tottenham
    • 13 Sep - West Ham 0-3 Tottenham
    • 20 Sep - Brighton 2-2 Tottenham
    • 30 Sep - Bodo/Glimt 2-2 Tottenham (UCL)
    • 04 Oct - Leeds United 1-2 Tottenham
    • 22 Oct - Monaco 0-0 Tottenham (UCL)

Tottenham defender Archie Gray, speaking to TNT Sports: "It was a difficult game. We weren't at our best. They were on top for most of the game and Guglielmo Vicario kept us in it.

"We always stick together but Vic was unbelievable keeping us in the game. We will learn from these tough moments. I believe this team can do anything. We all believe in each other."

Frank would definitely get an A* for his role as a manager considering the squad he's had while still getting decent results however the team at the moment is more or less a B. Still needs a lot of improvement and at least one more quality player, probably more.

  14. 'Monaco were better than us'published at 14:27 BST

    Monaco 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, speaking to TNT Sports: "It was not the best performance from us. There is a lot to learn from this game because the level in the Champions League is very high. If you miss some basics it is tough to compete.

"Everyone who plays at the back is a Champions League player. It is not about changes tonight, it is about the effort, the mentality and the awareness of danger we need to have in some situations. I think tonight we lacked a little bit of that.

"It is a point we have to take. It is a tough point because we had to battle and suffer a lot so credit to Monaco. Today they were better than us."

According to Squawka, Guglielmo Vicario is just one four goalkeepers to make 8+ saves and keep a clean sheet in a Uefa Champions League game for an English side in the last 10 seasons after Alisson Becker, Nick Pope and David De Gea.

Grade C so far. But this season should be treated as mostly a free hit for Frank. He's renowned for developing players and a system, we need to give him time to do so. One bad performance won't define him this early on.

    Sam, Brighton

I rate the start a C grade. Franks taken us from below average to bang average. Will take time to build on but we have a good base. We need a new attack for sure... BACK THOMAS THE FRANK ENGINE

    Josh, Royston

He’s only been in charge for 12 games never got the players he wanted Eze, Gibbs-White or Savinho. Most creative players out injured as well as main striker people need to give him time at least 3 transfer windows with the board stemming to back him.

It's important to remember Tottenham are still unbeaten in the Champions League. They went away to Monaco and everybody expected them to play better than they did, but sometimes you come up trumps and your goalkeeper pulls you out of it. For me, that's what happened last night.

Guglielmo Vicario pulled off so many big saves, he was absolutely insane. I read the stats afterwards and apparently Monaco only had four attempts on goal, but that can't be right. It felt like a lot more.

An xG map for Monaco for their game against Tottenham

The game between Monaco and Tottenham Hotspur may have ended goalless but it was as much of a 0-0 thrashing as you are ever likely to see.

Monaco dominated for the majority of the game and had it not been for Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, we could have been talking about a much different result.

The Italian made eight saves on the night and kept a clean sheet despite being on the receiving end of a 2.45 xG (expected goals) from the hosts.

Spurs on the other hand were tame in attack, producing an xG of just 0.87 on the night. Of their 11 shots, only two were on target.
