Match Facts
Dinamo Zagreb and Monaco have never previously faced before, while the Croatian club are winless in their last 12 meetings with French league opponents (D2 L10) in European competition, losing each of their last six in a row by an aggregate score of 19-1.
Monaco have never previously faced a Croatian side in any European competition before; French league clubs have won seven of their eight previous UEFA Champions League matches against Croatian opponents (D1) – all of which have been versus Dinamo Zagreb.
Dinamo Zagreb became the first team in UEFA Champions League history to concede nine goals in a game in their 9-2 defeat to Bayern Munich on MD1. Only one team has ever conceded 10+ goals in their first two games in a Champions League campaign – Celtic in 2016-17 (10).
Monaco have only won one of their last 11 UEFA Champions League away games (D4 L6), and are winless in their last seven (D3 L4) since a 3-2 win at Borussia Dortmund in April 2017.
Dinamo Zagreb have now shipped 14 goals in their last two major European games, losing 5-1 to PAOK Salonika in March in the Conference League and 9-2 to Bayern Munich on MD1 of this season’s UEFA Champions League. The last side to ship 5+ goals in three consecutive major European games were Luxembourg’s Avenir Beggen between 1992 and 1995.
Monaco ended a 14-match winless run in the UEFA Champions League with their 2-1 victory over Barcelona on MD1. They last won their opening two games in a Champions League campaign in 2003-04, a season they reached the final.
Dinamo Zagreb’s first goal in their defeat to Bayern Munich scored by Bruno Petkovic had a total of 19 passes in the build-up, their most before a UEFA Champions League goal on record (since 2011-12). Indeed, since 2003-04, only two goals against Bayern Munich have seen more passes in the build-up, both scored by Real Madrid.
Bruno Petkovic’s goal against Bayern Munich was the only one scored on MD1 of this season’s UEFA Champions League to see all 11 players involved in the move. Indeed, goalkeeper Ivan Nevistic was the Dinamo Zagreb player who initiated the sequence that Petkovic would score from.
Although he was the first goalkeeper to concede nine goals in a UEFA Champions League match, Dinamo Zagreb’s Ivan Nevistic was also the first goalkeeper on record (since 2003-04) to face as many as 19 shots on target in a Champions League game in their 9-2 loss to Bayern Munich, making 10 saves.
Monaco’s Vanderson assisted both of their goals in the 2-1 win over Barcelona on MD1 of this season’s UEFA Champions League. In doing so, he became the first player with two assists on his Champions League debut since Cristiano in September 2021 for Sheriff Tiraspol.
