Match Facts

  • Benfica and Atlético Madrid’s only previous meetings came in the group stage of the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League. Both sides won their away game 2-1 against the other.

  • Atlético Madrid have won three of their last four UEFA Champions League away games against Portuguese opponents, although lost their most recent 2-1 at FC Porto in November 2022.

  • Benfica have won just one of their last 10 home games against Spanish sides in all European competition (D4 L5), a 3-0 win over Barcelona in September 2021 after two goals from Darwin Núñez and one from Rafa Silva.

  • Benfica are looking to win their opening two UEFA Champions League matches in a season for just a third time, also doing so in 2015-16 and 2022-23.

  • Atlético Madrid have only won once in their last nine UEFA Champions League away games (D2 L6), a 3-1 win at Feyenoord in last season’s group stage.

  • Atlético Madrid have won seven of their last 10 UEFA Champions League matches (D1 L2), more than they won in their previous 26 games combined (W6 D9 L11). They’ve netted 24 goals in these 10 games, also more than in their previous 26 games (23).

  • Both of Benfica’s scorers against Crvena Zvezda on MD1 were from Türkiye (Orkun Kökçü and Kerem Aktürkoglu), the first time multiple Turkish players had scored for a team in a game since March 2013 (three for Galatasaray vs Schalke – Yilmaz, Bulut and Altintop) and the first time ever for a non-Turkish team.

  • Álvaro Carreras created the most chances of any Benfica player (3) in their victory over Crvena Zvezda on MD1, while Paris SG’s Achraf Hakimi (4) was the only defender to create more chances from open play in the first round of this season’s UEFA Champions League.

  • Along with scoring Atlético Madrid’s winning goal against RB Leipzig on MD1 (2-1), José Giménez recovered possession more times than any other centre back (10) in the first round of this season’s UEFA Champions League fixtures. Indeed, it was his joint-most in a single game in the competition to date (also 10 v PSV in March 2016).

  • Antoine Griezmann both scored and assisted in Atlético Madrid’s 2-1 win over RB Leipzig on MD1. He now has 49 goal involvements in the UEFA Champions League (37 goals, 12 assists) and could become the fourth Frenchman to register 50 goals and assists, after Karim Benzema (90 goals, 27 assists), Thierry Henry (50 goals, 25 assists) and Kylian Mbappé (49 goals, 23 assists).
