For Villa to keep this Bayern Munich side as quiet as they did tonight is a testament to their organisation and discipline. They had to get virtually everything right and they did so defensively.

Then it just took one long ball and a ruthless finish from Jhon Duran, who caught out Manuel Neuer, which we have seen happen a few times before. Jhon Duran taking plenty of the plaudits for his goal and why shouldn't he?

  7. 'Villa did not take risks, they tried to get a result'published at 22:53 British Summer Time 2 October

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Thomas Hitzlsperger
Former Aston Villa midfielder on MOTD: Uefa Champions League

This was a different Aston Villa to the one we have seen and perhaps many people wanted to see, but that didn’t matter.

Villa did not come out to play exciting football, and they were not attack minded like they usually are, but Unai Emery had a game plan and it worked out.

They did not try to take risks or please people, they tried to get a result.

It worked, partly because Bayern were not ruthless enough, and also because they have a world-class keeper in Emi Martinez when they were opened up… and also because they could bring someone like Jhon Duran off the bench to win them the game.

You can hear more from Hitzlsperger on MOTD: Uefa Champions League on BBC One and the BBC Sport website and app now.

  8. 'Leaving out Musiala sent the wrong message to Bayern team'published at 22:50 British Summer Time 2 October

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Christian Falk
Head of sport at Sport Bild on BBC Radio 5 Live

Tonight a few things were a bit odd. Why didn't Jamal Musiala start the match from the beginning? He is one of the team's most important players and to give him a rest in such a game..?

Everyone knows how good Aston Villa are at home. Bayern's next game is Frankfurt at home, not the most difficult test and leaving out Musiala perhaps sent the wrong message to the team.

  9. 'Sensational finish from Duran'published at 22:48 British Summer Time 2 October

Manuel Neuer's decision to come off his line made Jhon Duran's mind up, I still don't know what he was thinking. But I can't emphasise enough how much work Duran still had to do.

Just an amazing moment. I didn't feel it was coming because Bayern were in such control and it took one long ball. At the end of it the finish was sensational.

  10. 'I couldn't be happier for the fans!'published at 22:47 British Summer Time 2 October

Go on the Villa! Honestly my heart is still beating really fast.

I don't know how Jhon Duran scored that goal? He made it look so easy. As centre forward to put yourself in the right position as the ball is in the air, bring it down and then execute the finish as he did, it was an outstanding finish, from a young boy that is just making his way in the game.

I couldn't be happier for the fans!

The level of focus and discipline in that Villa performance reminded me of the game against Man City last season. What a statement win against one of the favourites for the trophy this season.

  13. 'Bayerns problems in defence not with Kane'published at 22:41 British Summer Time 2 October

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Christian Falk
Head of sport at Sport Bild on BBC Radio 5 Live

When we talk about Harry Kane tonight, normally when Serge Gnabry has a chance [like in the first half] he passes the ball and if Kane scores it is another match.

The problems for Bayern tonight were more in defence and with the Kompany high pressing system, not Harry Kane.

  14. 'Martinez did an amazing job, amazing saves'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 2 October

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery told TNT Sports: "We want to be consistent to play in Europe [regularly]."

On Jhon Duran: "We are working with him. Most important is his attitude. He's available to play 90, 60, 30 minutes. He's been focusing each minute he's playing. Today we had two very good strikers. It's fantastic for him and the team.

"Against teams like that, it's very important to be strong. Martinez did an amazing job, amazing saves.

"We have to try to play each match. We compete very well, we won. Maybe we can get the first eight posiitons."

  15. 'Kompany got taught a lesson by Emery'published at 22:38 British Summer Time 2 October

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Christian Falk
Head of sport at Sport Bild on BBC Radio 5 Live

Bayern Munich are a side who are used to dominating games but Unai Emery knows them well. He knocked them out of the competition in 2022 and he has beaten them again here.

Vincent Kompany is a very, very young coach and today he got taught a lesson by Unai Emery.

  16. 'Martinez enjoys the challenge'published at 22:37 British Summer Time 2 October

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Dion Dublin
Former Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Emi Martinez always seems to enjoy these big occasions, he never looks fazed, he has this persona and enjoys the challenge. He makes great decisions, knows when to stay on his line, come off his line and uses his experience. If he has to hold the ball for an extra 30 seconds then he does so.

He makes very good saves, he is very reliable and he is making a huge difference for Aston Villa. He is the goalkeeper that the club need to go forward.

  17. 'It wasn't a bad performance'published at 22:35 British Summer Time 2 October

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany talking to TNT Sports: "We missed some big chances and they scored the chance. We've got to take the learnings from this.

"Ollie Watkins has so many qualities to mention but one of his qualities is to split the two centre backs.

"When we have the ball, we're dangerous, but they're a strong team, this isn't an easy place. It wasn't a bad performance.

"It's the same job everywhere. It's a privilege, so much history. You work with top players but in the end, I can't score the goals.

"Obviously I knew Kane from playing against him, but he's evolved. I don't think he's ever someone who's ever stood still."

  19. 'Bologna made it difficult'published at 22:31 British Summer Time 2 October

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Bologna

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to TNT Sports: “It wasn't an easy one, in my opinion Bologna made it difficult - similar to Atalanta, man-mark all over the pitch. Wait for the right moment if you play through completely open - it was many times. The last pass could have been better."

On his time at the club so far: "Not only the players, also the staff I inherited, who were here before, it was positive from the start, the players as well. Keeping many things the same, they were very happy with former regimes. The good thing is that they bought into it."

On what he was delighted with this evening: “Not many things delighted with, apart from both goals, especially the second one. Great ball from Virgil [Van Dijk], great attack, great run from Trent Alexander-Arnold. It is always difficult to play a team takes that much risk.

"Overall a good result but I wouldn't use the world delighted myself today."

On Ryan Gravenberch: "I was delighted with him. I don’t say that to players at half-time because there is still 45 minutes to go but I said after the game ‘again big performance’.

    "Ryan was again outstanding today."

On the change in momentum in the first half: "I don't think it was concentration, it started off with free-kick they got, a few times conceded set pieces, a team gets momentum. You could see they have a very good game plan.

"If we play against a team comfortable in ball possession, sometimes you have to work hard, suffer, what I was delighted with was how they throw themselves in front of the ball, do everything to try and keep a clean sheet."

On his record, winning eight out of his first nine games as Liverpool boss: "It's hardly impossible to do something special at this club. It says a lot about how we started how players bought into it, the effort put in, the staff helped me. Even more difficult fixtures coming up starting on Saturday when we play a 12:30 kick-off after a Wednesday evening Champions League game. It's nice to start this way, that’s clear."
