Unai Emery guided Aston Villa to the semi-finals of the Europa League last season

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery says the club's first Champions League home game against Bayern Munich will be a "special" occasion.

Villa opened their campaign with a 3-0 win away at Young Boys in Switzerland and will play their first home fixture in Europe's elite competition since 1983.

German giants Bayern travel to Villa Park for a repeat of the 1982 European Cup final, which Villa famously won.

"We are motivated and so excited to play with our supporters in Villa Park. It is a special, special match for everyone," Emery told a news conference.

"We are very motivated coming back to Europe last year, with Aston Villa not playing Bayern Munich since 42 years ago."

Emery, who has taken charge of 188 games in European football, has beaten Bayern in the Champions League as manager of Paris St-Germain and Villarreal.

He said his side are underdogs to the six-time European Cup winners but urged his players to "compete" and "show their best".

"I think Europe is something very, very important and very, very difficult. This is the challenge we have now," Emery added.

"Of course it's against one of the best teams in the world. They are favourites, much bigger favourites than us."

Emery has no fresh injury concerns and confirmed right-back Matty Cash has returned to training after five weeks out with a hamstring injury, but will not be considered for the match.

Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara, neither of whom have featured this season, have also resumed training after long-term knee injuries but are still some way from being available for selection.

Harry Kane has five goals and four assists in the Bundesliga this season

England captain Harry Kane is set to be assessed by Bayern after appearing to shake off an ankle injury.

Kane was substituted in the 86th minute of Bayern's 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena Saturday following a challenge by Amine Adli.

The 31-year-old was in visible pain after he limped out after the collision but trained as normal on Tuesday and travelled to Birmingham with the rest of Vincent Kompany's squad.

Kane has 10 goals in seven appearances for Bayern this season, and scored four in a 9-2 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb in their Champions League opener

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins says he wants to one day replace Harry Kane as England's main man in attack as the pair go head to head on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old came on for Kane several times during Euro 2024 and memorably fired England into the final with a last-minute winner against the Netherlands.

"Everyone is fighting for a position on the pitch so I want to be the man to play but day in day out we have a good relationship," Watkins said.

"We talk and when I'm in the camp I speak to him so there's no animosity and I'm doing all I can to be on the pitch and so is he."
