  1. Goodnightpublished at 23:00 British Summer Time 15 May

That's the end of this live text. Thanks for joining us tonight as Chelsea and Manchester United boosted their European chances with victories, but Newcastle hindered theirs with defeat.

Just one more day of Premier League football to go this season so we'll see you Sunday with the title, European places and (technically) relegation still to be decided.

  2. 'We are in a transition at this club'published at 22:58 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Finally from Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports: “I think we had a difficult season, but one thing was constant and that was them [fans] being with us and backing the team. We are very pleased with it and we want to pay them back.

“Our last game [at home]. We wanted to thank them for sticking with us, we are in difficult times.

“We are in a transition at this club and the results are not what we expect.

“We also have our reasons, but it's still a disappointing season.

“I am very pleased [with the performance against Newcastle]. In the past months we had many games where we were in winning positions but we couldn’t get over the line.

“Today was very good and we can bring Lisandro Martinez on, an experienced player and warrior in difficult moments."

On Casemiro: “I think he played a very good game and used his experience and calmness. I was pleased with his performance.”

On youngsters: “This club is in a transition, we have had a disappointing season but in this disappointment we progressed some good young players; Rasmus Hojlund, Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. It is good that three were on the scoresheet.”

On possibly winning the FA Cup: “I don’t talk about this moment. We have talk about Brighton.”

On his future at the club: “I cannot answer tonight this question as it is a very long answer.

“I don’t think it is the right moment to talk about this. I have to talk about the next game and then a great final – it a huge achievement even in a disappointing season.

“I see the positives this team is developing.”

Manchester United have conceded 58 Premier League goals this season.

The Red Devils last shipped more in a top-flight season in 1978-79 (63).

  4. How it standspublished at 22:53 British Summer Time 15 May

FT: Brighton 1-2 Chelsea; Manchester United 3-2 Newcastle

Chelsea need just a point at home to Bournemouth to secure European football, something Tottenham are guaranteed after Newcastle lost to Manchester United.

A Chelsea win could take them above Spurs, if Ange Postecoglou's side lose at Sheffield United.

Manchester United will be in Europe if they better Newcastle's result at the weekend. However, if Manchester United win the FA Cup that would take them into the Europa League instead of the Conference League and would drop the side finishing sixth into the Conference League.

Newcastle need to win at Brentford and hope Chelsea lose. Alternatively, if Newcastle finish seventh they need Manchester City to beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Newcastle

Newcastle have scored 81 Premier League goals this season. Their record in a season is the 82 they managed in 1993-94, which was a 42-game campaign.

Only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool have netted more in the league this season.

  6. 'The referee, I didn't like him today'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, speaking to Match of the Day: "We lost against a top team with great players. We didn't play well in the first 20 minutes but after that we played a good game. We have another game to reach the top 10 position.

"The referee, I didn't like him today. I don't think it was a good performance from him.

"We have suffered too many injuries this season. We know the level of players of Chelsea and what they have spent over the last two or three transfer markets."

  7. 'Either get rid of it or get better' - Gordon on VARpublished at 22:45 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we played alright.

"Defensively away from home we have been poor - we have to fix that.

"We created a lot, but we didn't take our chances. We cannot blame anything else but ourselves.

    "But, today wasn't our day."

On a potential ankle injury and penalty call: "Really sore. Not too sure how good my ankle will be.

"I have watched it back and it is a clear penalty. I don't mind the referee getting it wrong on the pitch, but I don't understand the point of VAR.

"He [Sofyan Amrabat] goes down my Achilles and pushes me in the back.

"I knew straight away, that is why I didn't appeal. I waited for the VAR to check, I told my team-mates 'it was a clear penalty'. I don't understand the point of it, either get rid of it or get better - it's that simple.

"I think I am quite fond of it. Fond of the idea and it should work, but there are too many mistakes."

On his hopes of Euro 2024: "I won't let a sore ankle get in the way of that."

  8. 'It was an opportunity to grab Europe'published at 22:42 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: “We had chances to do more, but the way we defended the three goals wasn’t good enough - this season compared to last we have conceded goals.

“It's something we have to change longer term."

On Kieran Trippier's position for the opening goal: ”Reluctant to focus on one player.

“When you look back through the goals we have conceded today there are multiple errors in all three goals.

“I don’t think Man Utd hurt us a great deal but we conceded three goals. We looked good going forward, we did create chances but didn’t get enough bodies in the key chances, but we scored two goals and it should be enough to get something from the game.

“You feel momentum is with us and there is a much better feel with us in the second half. Then a second goal from a set-play. It is a combination of errors and we know we have to do better."

On Anthony Gordon’s penalty call: “I thought it was a penalty. You have to see it one to three times to see where the contact is. I thought that’s what VAR was good at.”

On scrapping VAR: “I have always been in an era where the referee makes a decision and I back it.

“I would possibly keep it [VAR] with offsides, but I want more power with referees.”

On Europe: “I don’t know. In this moment we are disappointed to not win today. It was an opportunity to grab Europe instead of looking around at other results.”

  9. 'It allows us to dream to play in Europe next season'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "It's always very competitive, the Premier League is the toughest league in the world. Full credit to the players, we fully deserved the victory, that's why I'm so happy and it allows us to dream to play in Europe next season.

"We need to think about recovery and keep the mentality of going to win and see what happens. The most important thing is belief and performances and the performances and results are really good.

"We dominated from the beginning against a team that's not easy to play, that's why we're so proud and so happy. The evolution of the team is there."

On the future of VAR: "Next season we have to see if we can improve how we use VAR. For me it's not in or out, it's about improving how we use it. It can be amazing to have it in the right way and VAR can be a fantastic tool to help the referees and us."

  10. 'We were let down by some of our defending'published at 22:38 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: "Frustrating for us. Away from home this year our record hasn't been good enough. Familiar scene for us. We conceded poor goals and ultimately that has cost us the game.

"It was a decent performance. We looked a good team but were let down by some of our defending.

"Attacking-wise we were good and had a threat all game. We took our goals well. Frustrated we didn't get more.

"There's a chance and while there's a chance we'll give it everything we can.

"Anthony Gordon has been excellent for us. He took his goal well. He should have had a penalty as well."

  11. 'It has been a very tough season'published at 22:36 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi to Sky Sports: "I think we played a very good second half and the second part of the first half as well. We know the qualities of Chelsea.

"I think we gave our best and we have another game to reach the top 10 position.

"It has been a very tough season and the fans have understood everything.

"We have competed in a good way but have lost too many points at home, especially in the first part of the season and we have paid for that.

"I think it was a clear penalty today. But the problem is not VAR, the problem is the level of the referees. Today I did not like the performance of the referee.

"But I make more mistakes than the referee.

"I am happy for this season but I am sorry because I am disappointed and wished we would compete in a different way. Next season we can be a stronger squad and team."

  12. 'Massive credit to our players'published at 22:33 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to Match of the Day, said: "The approach of the game, facing a team that plays well like Brighton, it's a massive credit to our players. I'm so happy and the three points puts us in a very good position in the table to attack the last game against Bournemouth for the possibility to be in Europe.

"Brighton is a very good team and it's always difficult to play here.

"We have improved results and performances. We talked about patience and when you need to build something you need time but it always looks like an excuse at a big club. We have kept working and being positive and to finish in a good way would be good for the club."

On whether VAR should be used in the Premier League next season: "It's not my decision. We're living in an era of technology and for me it's not in or out, yes or no on VAR, it's about improving how we use it."

  13. 'We found the really good balance'published at 22:27 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag told BBC Sport: "It's always nice to win any game. It's important to win the last game at Old Trafford this season. The fans deserve this because they've had difficult times and always stayed with us.

"We are here together. We wanted to pay the fans back.

"Fantastic. Great goals. But it was a team effort how we made the goals. But I'm always happy at young players who are progressing very good and scored some brilliant goals.

"Newcastle have a lot of physical power and you have to match that but you also have to play football. We had found the really good balance in this.

"I think he [Hojlund] needs some rest so he's fresh. Strikers live for goals. It's very important for his confidence so I'm really pleased he scored."

On the FA Cup final: "We don't think about this yet. First we have Brighton in the last game which is important in the ranking. We don't have it in our hands but we have to do our job."

  14. 'All the players love the manager'published at 22:26 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalscorer Cole Palmer said: "We needed three points and it was hard towards the end but for it to be in our hands to get sixth place is a big thing for us.

"Marc [Cucurella] knows where I'm going to be and I lifted it [the header] over the goalkeeper.

"Chelsea is a big club and everyone wants to finish higher than sixth but you have to look at where we were at the start of the season so to get back into Europe would be a step in the right direction.

"All credit to the manager. All the players love the manager and want to fight for him."

  15. 'We didn't play to the best of our ability'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 15 May

    FT: Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton goalscorer Danny Welbeck said: "Disappointing, frustrating. We didn't play to the best of our ability and that's the frustrating part. We have to analyse and see where we can do much better and finish the season strongly against Manchester United.

"This is a game we wanted to win and we have to brush ourselves down and go again.

"It has been a long time [since he scored] and I'm not happy at that but obviously happy to get a goal. Overall we're disappointed with the result, it's very frustrating. As professionals we want to finish very well, the best we can and we want to give the fans a good lasting moment for the summer."

On signing a new contract this week: "This has been a very special place since I came here and season on season it has got better. It's a great club, with great people and I'm really enjoying it here and looking forward to making more special memories."

    Manchester United

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes, speaking to Sky Sports: “Obviously the job isn’t finished yet. We still have one game in the Premier League then the biggest game of the season, the FA Cup final.

“It has been a tough season. The table shows that and we are all aware of that. The fans have been amazing and behind us all season. We all appreciate what they have been doing for us.

“We want to do better and do differently and they [fans] deserve that.

“They have been amazing for us and we had to do something, we have been trying but results don’t show that. We have been working hard and everyone has been giving their best it is not enough and we have to do more.

“We still have two games to go and we have to finish in the best way.

“It doesn’t exist, a captain's performance, it is a team performance.

"I am no different from anyone just because I have the armband. I always try my best and we always do the best we can for the club – nobody hides that we play for a big club and we have to lift our standards every game.”

On his future: “I will be here till when the club wants me and the club wants me to be a part of the future. If for some reason they don’t want me, then I will go.”
