    England
    England manager Thomas Tuchel

England manager Thomas Tuchel spoke about how he wants his players to play with freedom but with a plan and guidelines in place.

"It's easier said than done, it needs a lot of clarity - in which position you play, it needs some guidelines and some rules for it and within these rules they can be creative.

"But you need to be a good teammate, you need to respect the space of your teammates around you and we have potential to be better at that."

  3. What do Gibbs-White's stats say this season?published at 15:35 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

Argentina and Spain. France, Germany, Italy, Brazil. Portugal and the Netherlands. Someone could kindly enlighten me as to how exactly securing a Quarter Final at the World Cup isn't already an achievement? Is it because we haven't won anything since 1966 sadly that is irrelevant in 2026. There are 8 nations right there that are 50/50 games at best. Get to the QF and then it's as much luck as anything else.

  5. 'There needs to be a bit more respect shown to the players before and Southgate'published at 15:31 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter on Football Daily

BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter, Ian Dennis, speaking on Football Daily, believes there needs to be 'more respect' shown to Gareth Southgate's achievements:

"The fear of failure is something you could level at an England team when they were struggling to get past either the last-16 or the quarterfinals. Under Gareth Southgate, I thought they bridged that fear of failure. That fear of failure used to be a problem.

"I remember Glenn Hoddle talking about it that they had to use it as a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block. England, have in recent tournaments, used that as a stepping stone to get to either a semi-final or a final of the Euros in consecutive tournaments.

"However, it's that next stepping stone to actually going on to win a trophy. I thought in some respects, from Thomas Tuchel, there needs to be a bit more respect shown to the players before and Gareth Southgate.

"Because all England are missing now is the final piece of the jigsaw. That's why Thomas Tuchel was brought in."

  7. New caps, no Bradley and keeper decision - NI talking pointspublished at 15:28 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

Northern Ireland v Switzerland (19:45 GMT)

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has had to make some big decisions in his time since returning to the hot-seat in December 2022.

He famously led the country to their first major tournament in 30 years when they qualified for Euro 2016 - and has ambitions to do it again this year with the World Cup on the horizon.

But so far, it's been a rebuilding job. Only one of his Euro 2016 team - Paddy McNair - is in this squad for these friendlies with Switzerland and Sweden.

Forwards Jamie Donley and Ronan Hale look set to make their international bows for NI after transfers from England and Republic of Ireland respectively but there's a big absence at the back with Liverpool's Conor Bradley and Sunderland's Dan Ballard both out injured.

One of O'Neill's big decisions is going to be around his goalkeeper with Pierce Charles (Sheffield Wednesday), Conor Hazard (Plymouth Argyle) and Luke Southwood (Bolton Wanderers) all in contention.

You can keep across all the build-up for tonight's game on our dedicated page for the Northern Ireland men's international team.

Jordan Henderson - will he start? Social media will explode if Jordan Henderson starts because there was a lot of controversy about him being in the squad.

The former Liverpool player's inclusion in Tuchel's first England squad has brought immense criticism from fans. Time will tell if the German manager will rely on Henderson in the starting XI.

  9. 'Decisive' Tuchel is what England needpublished at 15:24 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    England v Albania (19:45 GMT)

    Henry Winter
Football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

England have an elite selection of players, and now we have a truly world-class coach who is decisive in big games.

We've all seen it in the Champions League final with Chelsea against the favourites Manchester City [in 2021]. He [Tuchel] had his team so well set up, motivated and made in-game changes.

Gareth Southgate, who started England on this journey for trophies, fell short. Tuchel can finish it off because of his ability to be decisive late on in games.

  10. MetLife Stadium to host World Cup finalpublished at 15:21 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

The MetLife Stadium is the chosen venue to host the World Cup final in 2026.

Let's take a look around some of the key information around this incredible stadium:

    • After opening in 2010, it serves as the home ground for NFL teams New York Giants and New York Jets
    • It cost approximately $1.6 billion and was the most expensive stadium in the USA at the time of completion
    • In January 2024, renovations began on the lower bowl to enlarge the pitch to meet necessary Fifa requirements to host eight games, including the final

Kane is appreciated as he should be. But his recent performances with his movements and positioning have been a detriment to the team. For me Rooney is over-appreciated as he did nothing at the major tournaments and as he got older he moved further and further back to get a touch of the ball which made the team worse.

  14. 'Tuchel is used to scrutiny'published at 15:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    John Bennett
BBC Senior Broadcast Journalist on the Football News Show

It does make me laugh when we talk about the pressure and scrutiny he will be under. This is Thomas Tuchel, he's managed Paris St-Germain and Bayer Munich. He is used to this scrutiny.

At Bayern, the German press - they do scrutinise your personal life. The same with PSG. The headline at L'Equipe newspaper almost every day is PSG so he's used to that scrutiny and pressure.

I don't think that will be a problem. We've seen the way he's dealt with difficult questions in press conferences I think that's going to be an easy part for him.

  15. Last five England managers and their tenurepublished at 15:09 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

With Thomas Tuchel's contract only 18 months with England, let's have a look at the last five managers and how long they were in the job.

    • Five years and seven months - Sven Goran Eriksson
    • One year and three months - Steve McLaren
    • Four years and two months - Fabio Capello
    • Four years and two months - Roy Hodgson
    • Seven years and 10 months - Gareth Southgate

Not including Sam Allardyce whose England tenure only lasted 67 days.

I think the criticism of Kane as an England player is down to more than just a lack of trophies. It’s about a lacking impact. I think it’s more about the set-up than about his unquestioned ability but he never seems to be able to impact games in major tournaments. Even his golden boot was almost entirely penalties, a few goals against poor opposition, and a hat-trick he scored by accident when somebody kicked the ball against him.

    Edd

The fact that fans are texting in saying "all he does is score goals" shows how under-appreciated Kane is. His off the ball movement, his hold up play, his assists, his passing, all more than just "scoring goals".

  17. Timeline of Kane under Tuchelpublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

With Harry Kane and Thomas Tuchel reunited with England, let's have a look at their time together for Bayern Munich.

    • Bayern were knocked out of DFB-Pokal in November 2023 by FC Saarbrucken.
    • Bayern were knocked out of Europe after losing to 4-3 on aggregate to Real Madrid in the semi finals.
    • Tuchel and co. also lost the Bundesliga as they finished third and 18 points behind champions Bayer Leverkusen.
    • According to Transfermarkt, Kane in 45 games playing for Tuchel had 44 goals and 12 assists.

If Tuchel chooses to play 4 at the back, from those in his squad I’d start Burn, Guehi, Colwill, and Livramento.

    Rob, Brighton

You ask what IX and system Tuchel should play tonight against Albania. It really shouldn't matter as any IX and system should beat them. He is likely to learn nothing. Only an over cautious approach, like Southgate, would cause a problem.

  20. 'We've got a squad of players here that are capable of winning'published at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    England v Albania (19:45 GMT)

    Harry Redknapp
Former manager at various clubs on 5 Live

On England's qualifying campaign: "I mean listen, these games are difficult, they don't show you an awful lot, the opposition is poor, so you know, you win all that qualifying games as usual and go through. It's when we get to a tournament that we really see what we're made of, but I certainly think we've got a squad of players here that are capable of winning a few Euros or a World Cup. It really is an amazing young group, a group of young players, so yeah, it's a great time for him to take over. Gareth did a good job but we still haven't won the trophy, so he's got every chance."
