  1. Kane's scoring statspublished at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    England v Albania (19:45 GMT)

While you ponder that last question, let's remind ourselves of Harry Kane's impressive goal stats for club and country:

    • England's all-time leading scorer on 69 goals
    • Netted 76 times in 82 games for Bayern Munich
    • Scored 10 goals in 11 Champions League games this season - the first English player to reach this mark in a single campaign
    • Left the Premier League with 213 goals in 320 appearances.

  2. How do you qualify as an England legend?published at 08:57 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

Well that's another triggering statement, David.

"Harry Kane must help England lift a trophy to be regarded as a true legend."

So only the team of 1966 can lay claim to being true England legends?

Kane's 69 goals in 103 appearances, making him the Three Lions' leading goalscorer by a country mile, is not enough?

I don't think Kane is taken for granted. At the last tournament England looked better when he wasn't on the pitch, and what he's doing at Bayern isn't anything he hasn't done before in a harder league. I think he is recognised as a great, but needs to win something with England if he wants to be a true legend.

  5. 'I've achieved a lot in my career'published at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    England v Albania (19:45 GMT)

"It's hard. Sometimes it motivates me. Sometimes, to be honest, I try to stay away from it as much as I can," said Kane, on criticism he has received for his performances in a Bayern Munich shirt.

"Probably, when I was young I listened to more than what I do now. Ultimately, I criticise myself more than anyone could do on the outside but... always use it as fuel to prove people wrong.

"In today's game, I feel like there's such a difference between a high and a low. You go from not scoring for a couple of games to people saying he's not sharp enough... to scoring and you're a Ballon d'Or contender and it's like, the difference is too high and too low.

"I know what I've done in my career and I feel like I have a lot of respect from a lot of football people out there and I've achieved a lot in my career."

  6. Why has Kane been criticised?published at 08:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

Interestingly, Harry Kane has also spoken about fielding criticism at club level as well.

The England captain has been re-writing records with Bayern Munich over the past two seasons, since he signed from Tottenham.

But despite scoring 76 goals in 82 games, helping to propel his side back to the top of the Bundesliga this season after they missed out on the title to Bayer Leverkusen last year, concerns have been raised about his lack of pace, mobility and ability to press.

Aged 31, there is no doubt Kane has been forced to adapt his game as he has grown older, but the goals have continued to flow...

Get Involved - are you bored of Kane's goals?published at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

We know, it's a bit of a leading question, but that is essentially what England captain Harry Kane is saying.

The Bayern Munich striker is England's greatest ever goalscorer - with 69 goals in 103 appearances.

It's a fact he believes is being taken for granted - not only that, Kane thinks England fans are now bored of hearing about it.

    So what do you think?

Should we savour Kane's talent more and enjoy the moment while the 31-year-old is still turning out for the Three Lions, or do we need to start looking to the future?

  8. Kane feels 'taken for granted'published at 08:21 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    England v Albania (19:45 GMT)

Harry Kane also came out with some strong words in his first news conference of the Thomas Tuchel era.

The Bayern Munich striker may be captain of his country and England's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals, but he still feels like he is being "taken for granted".

"It's like when [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi were throwing these crazy numbers out there and the next season they'd score 40 goals instead of 50. It was like they were having a bad season," Kane said.

"People take it for granted and maybe a little bit with England as well. I've scored 69 goals and when you score against Albania or Latvia, or these teams, people just expect it so it's not spoken about so much."

    Today's newspapers

The Telegraph described Thomas Tuchel's comments as a "damning assessment" of Gareth Southgate's era as England manager.

The Times, meanwhile, said that the new England coach wanted to "keep politics away from the pitch".

As Alex mentioned, the gathering press pack were somewhat taken aback by Thomas Tuchel's reading of England's Euro 24 campaign.

Let's have a look at how his comments were interpreted in today's national newspapers...

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at Tottenham Hotspur's training ground

As I was in place at Tottenham Hotspur's training ground yesterday, waiting for the news conferences with England head coach Thomas Tuchel and captain Harry Kane to start, the chat was about those Tuchel comments where he describes England as "afraid" last summer.

It's a strong summary considering England did make the final.

We have heard from players this week about Tuchel's intense and direct speeches, so it looks as though he's trying to make sure the players know exactly how he wants them to play from week one.

  13. What have we learned about Tuchel so far?published at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

So what can we read into Thomas Tuchel's final 23-man squad?

England's new head coach has already given us a few clues as to how he is going to approach the role.

Let's return to those comments about the previous regime and how the Three Lions played under Gareth Southgate.

Tuchel certainly seemed eager to draw a line under the past and stamp his authority on this squad...

  14. Is Gibbs-White unfortunate to miss out?published at 08:02 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    England v Albania (19:45 GMT)

So, there we have it. Morgan Gibbs-White won't be involved at Wembley tonight despite leading a Nottingham Forest side to third place in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has 12 goal involvements in the top flight and has been integral in Nottingham Forest's impressive season.

It seems as though Thomas Tuchel prefers the experience of veteran Jordan Henderson, despite only starting 15 times for Ajax in the league this term.

Just a reminder that Morgan Gibbs-White was a late addition to Thomas Tuchel's squad after concerns emerged over Cole Palmer's fitness.

Southampton's Aaron Ramsdale was one of four goalkeepers in the initial squad, alongside number one Jordan Pickford, Crystal Palace's Dean Henderson and James Trafford, who has been in exceptional form for Championship side Burnley.

Jarell Quansah misses out after making 22 appearances for Premier League leaders Liverpool this season. He is yet to make his debut for the senior England side but has eight caps for the Under-21s.

    Sami Mokbel
    Senior football correspondent

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has left Morgan Gibbs-White, Jarell Quansah and Aaron Ramsdale out of his squad to face Albania tonight.

Tuchel takes charge of the national team for the first time at Wembley this evening and one of his first tasks has been to drop the trio from his match-day party.

Uefa rules state that a manager can only select 23 players in his squad for a fixture.

Tuchel selected 26 players in his party for the games versus Albania and Latvia, meaning he is required to cut three ahead of each game.

And Gibbs-White, Quansah and Ramsdale are the three to have missed out ahead of tonight’s World Cup qualifier.

Harry Kane will captain the side tonight, while Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are expected to start.

All eyes will be on who starts alongside Kane in attack, with Phil Foden, Morgan Rogers and Anthony Gordon all pushing to play.

The England shirt isn't heavy - Thomas Tuchel

In a nutshell, Thomas Tuchel said that he wanted his Three Lions to play with a "hunger to win" rather than "a fear to lose" - something he believes was evident in Gareth Southgate's squad at Euro 24.

"I've heard a lot that it's a heavy shirt. It is in fact not. But I know what the players mean," Tuchel said in a news conference on Thursday.

"Watching the Euros I felt tension and pressure on the shoulders of the players and they were playing not to lose.

"I want us to play with excitement and the hunger and desire to win...and the acceptance of failure is part of it, especially in football."

  20. Good morningpublished at 07:27 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

Welcome to Friday's football news live page.

After months of waiting, it's finally time for the first match of a new England era under Thomas Tuchel.

Anyone expecting a nice easy introduction to life under the German head coach will have been disappointed by his opening words.

He criticised the approach to the Euros last summer under previous coach Gareth Southgate, saying they were playing with fear.

Of course, that approach led the Three Lions all the way to the final in Germany, where they lost 2-1 to Spain.

We will assess the impact of Tuchel's comments and look at how the former Bayern Munich and Chelsea coach wants his side to tackle tonight's World Cup qualifier against Albania at Wembley.
