Re: Alan @ 13:14 Had Lewis hall been fit I imagine he'd be the starting LB as well as the players you named.

    Luke, Newcastle

The 20-year-old made his Chelsea debut under Thomas Tuchel in a 5-1 win against Chesterfield in the third round of the FA Cup.

Hall became Chelsea’s youngest-ever FA Cup starter, at 17 years and 122 days, and he went on to make 12 appearances for Chelsea before joining Newcastle initially on loan, and then a permanent transfer the following season.

The defender is currently set to miss the rest of the season witha foot injury that occurred during a 2-0 defeat to league leaders Liverpool last month.

  2. Tuchel praises 'very good start' as England bosspublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

England manager Thomas Tuchel sat down for an interview with BBC's John Murray and spoke about his first few days as England manager in training camp.

"It was a very good week so far, very good start. I feel very alive to be back with the team and the players on the pitch. The players were amazing as a group in the level of quality of the training."

  3. Contradictions abound where defensive decisions are to be madepublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

It's defence where we will learn Thomas Tuchel's true intentions...and where there are defensive decisions to be made, contradictions abound.

Kyle Walker's inclusion attests to the pull of conservatism, but Myles Lewis-Skelly does the opposite. Jordan Henderson over Adam Wharton is an eye-catchingly anti-progressive decision, as is the sturdy Dan Burn over Jarrad Branthwaite.

Each choice hints at competing voices on Tuchel's shoulders. Those whispers will be loudest when Trent Alexander-Arnold, unavailable for selection this time, comes back into the fold. What happens to him will prove instructive.

A Premier League-inspired Tuchel - of intense, direct, and physical football - will make Trent the beating heart.

The Champions League-winning Tuchel - of necessity, caution and restrictive gameplans - will follow in Southgate's footsteps and leave the Liverpool right-back on the bench.

  4. Why four is the magic number for Tuchel - pt 3published at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

Real Madrid 2-1 Bayern Munich - Thomas Tuchel came close to pulling off another Champions League shock before his Bayern side were finally beaten 4-3 on aggregate in last season's semi-finals. The defence in a 4-2-3-1 formation will be familiar to Premier League fans. Manchester United pair Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui (left-back) lined up alongside former Tottenham and England defender Eric Dier, with Joshua Kimmich, who has been linked with a move to the Premier League, at right-back. Harry Kane led the line as a lone striker.

  5. Why four is the magic number for Tuchel - pt 2published at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

Chelsea 1-0 Manchester City - Out of the four key games we are highlighting in Thomas Tuchel's managerial career, he only plumped for a three-man central defence in one of them - and that was the one he won. Tuchel hooked up with Thiago Silva once again at Chelsea, where they upset the odds to beat favourites City in the 2021 Champions League final. Silva was partnered with Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta, while Reece James and Ben Chilwell played in the wide positions of a 3-4-2-1 formation.

  6. Why four is the magic number for Tuchel - pt 1published at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

Thomas Tuchel has flitted between a four-man and three-man defence throughout his club career, but has often reverted to four at the back for big matches.

Let's have a look at four key games from Tuchel's previous sides - Borussia Dortmund, Paris St-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich - as an example:

Liverpool 4-3 Borussia Dortmund - Mats Hummels marshalled a four-man defence for Dortmund in a 4-2-3-1 formation as they opened up a 3-1 lead at Anfield in the 2016 Europa League quarter-finals, only to concede three goals in the final 30 minutes to lose the tie.

Paris St-Germain 0-1 Bayern Munich - Tuchel harnessed the combined talents of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in a 4-3-3 formation to guide PSG to the 2020 Champions League final. Thiago Silva was the cornerstone of PSG's four-man defence but they were undone by a second-half winner from Kingsley Coman.

Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood had a tremendous night with New Zealand as he bagged a hat-trick against Fiji in a 7-0 win. However, after being subbed, he was shown a yellow card for signing autographs for fans sitting near the home side's bench.

After scoring a hat-trick of headers, New Zealand moved a win away from securing World Cup qualification. Their next game is against New Caledonia on Monday.

I’d go this tonight. In a 4-3-3: Pickford, James, Guehi, Konsa, Lewis-Skelly; Jones, Rice, Bellingham; Foden, Kane, Rashford.

    England v Albania (19:45 GMT)

    Harry Redknapp
Former manager at various clubs on 5 Live

Well again, maybe he'll be a little bit more open. I do feel at times we've played people, you know, full-backs in wing-back positions who can't really give you anything going forward and we could have played wingers in that system instead.

I think he'll open up, perhaps open up a bit and have a bit more of a go. Yeah, there's enough attacking talent. When you look at the attacking players we've got, it's amazing.

The options he's got to choose from, you see people like Jack Grealish, who hasn't been in great form for Man City or been playing much, but he's such a talent and would walk in almost any team in the world for sure and he can't even get in the squad.

The squad's full of quality and it's a great chance for Thomas Tuchel to go on and really to win something for England.

  12. Analysis: Who will make Tuchel's first England squad?published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

What is certain is that Harry Kane’s presence in England’s preferred starting XI will continue.

Likewise, you’d imagine Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham will continue to play integral roles for England in the Tuchel era.

Tuchel is also said to like Curtis Jones’ energy and mobility in the middle of the park.

In attack, Tuchel is understood to be a big admirer of Manchester City attacker Phil Foden, who will be hopeful of having a consistent starting role in the new head coach’s plans.

Marcus Rashford’s return to form with Aston Villa hasn’t gone unnoticed by Tuchel, with the attacker pushing hard for a recall against Albania.

With John Stones unavailable through injury, Tuchel is without his most recognised centre-back option.

Marc Guehi was Stones’ central defensive partner for all but one of England’s matches in Germany, however it is understood the Crystal Palace defender is set to miss out tonight with Ezri Konsa and Dan Burn, who would be making debut, pushing to play.

At right-back, Kyle Walker appears the safest bet with the AC Milan defender closing in on 100 international caps.

The biggest quandary is at left-back; with Tino Livramento and Myles Lewis-Skelly competing for a spot in the team.

  13. Will Tuchel venture away from Southgate's trusted personnel?published at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    Sami Mokbel
    Senior football correspondent

Thomas Tuchel was rather frank in his assessment of England’s Euro 2024 campaign on Thursday.

‘Afraid,’ he said, whilst also commenting on his perception that under Gareth Southgate the national team lacked a clear vision and strategy.

So with that in mind, all eyes will be on Tuchel’s first team selection as England head coach when his side play Albania tonight.

How far will the German venture away from Southgate’s trusted personnel? Will he fulfil his promise to make England more ‘exciting’ amid the perpetual narrative that Southgate was too cautious in his approach?

Among the key aspects to watch out for tonight is what formation Tuchel selects. It is understood the team have spent most of the week training with a back four, which could indicate the direction England are heading ahead of the game versus Albania.

Of course, Tuchel has a history of utilising a back-three - it was his favoured approach during his time at Chelsea, where he won the Champions League.

But using this week’s training sessions as a guide; Tuchel appears likely to select a back-four against Albania this evening.

  14. 'Wouldn't surprise me' if Henderson started tonightpublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March

    England v Albania (19:45 GMT)

    Henry Winter
Football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

Jordan Henderson has been an amazing servant to the country and it wouldn't surprise me [if he started].

The theme from yesterday, when Tuchel and Harry Kane were talking, is the need for leadership.

Henderson's personality on and off the pitch is a leader. He probably hasn't made the best decisions in his career in the last 24 months but he is a leader.

Tuchel has seen that and is probably going off of some of his own experiences when he was Chelsea manager and the opponents he came up against and respected.

I think there is a case, long-term, of Adam Wharton stepping up from the under-21s to play alongside Declan Rice if there is a two-man defensive pivot but it wouldn't surprise me if we saw Henderson involved tonight.

It is all quiet at Wembley Stadium, bar the sound of the lawnmowers, ahead of Thomas Tuchel's first game in charge.

The ground staff are marking the pitch and giving it one last cut, whilst the litter pickers are making sure the terraces are clear.

More than 80,000 fans will pack the stadium tonight, with a sizeable contingent supporting Albania.

I am not entirely sure how often Thomas Tuchel will sit down during his first match in charge, but here is the England "bench" where he and his coaching staff will be based.

Wembley looks immaculate ahead of the German's first game in charge of England. The ground staff and operations team at the national stadium go out of their way to prepare the venue to be perfect for each and every game.

The one thing they can't control is what happens on the pitch.

Will it be the perfect start for Thomas Tuchel? You can hear the game on BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Sounds and here on the BBC Sport website from 7.45pm tonight.

The first match in charge is always a special moment for a new England coach and for Thomas Tuchel that comes against Albania at Wembley tonight - but we should cut to the chase.

Tuchel and England would be embarrassed not to breeze through the World Cup qualifying group they have landed.

It is all about the World Cup next summer and Tuchel has effectively been employed to win it after signing an 18-month contract.

Without taking the opposition lightly, England should eventually find themselves in a position to use the latter part of Tuchel's contract as a fact-finding mission to get them to a point where they can become winners not nearly men.

I don’t understand the inclusion of Rashford at all. In trying to build a cohesive team that fight for each other, he doesn’t strike me as someone who has been anything but divisive. Have him in the squad by all means to see how he works with others now he’s out of Man U, but I think it’s way to early to give him a start for our National team.

    John Bennett
BBC Senior Broadcast Journalist on the Football News Show

I don't think he [Thomas Tuchel] will go three at the back, I think he will go four at the back. He's talked about the fact that he wants to play with wingers.

The back four will be interesting, will Dan Burn get a go at centre-back or left-back? He had a good relationship with James during their time at Chelsea. Will he start or will Kyle Walker get in?"
