The Geordies are a great fan base, but I did not expect this atmosphere. I can feel it through the TV; to be there must be crazy. That's a 12th man if I've ever seen one.

There are no surprises in European football any more - the big clubs have spent the better part of 30 years killing them off. I think Qarabag will be better than many expect, based on their Europa League form last year, and Galatasaray and Athletic Bilbao might offer a bit of variety in the last 16.

But in terms of actually progressing into the latter stages, it has to be Napoli, given the depth of squad Antonio Conte has built. Yep, that's right: this year's dark horses are... the champions of Italy.

The 2025-26 Champions League season is the second to take place under a new format.

There are some slight changes to the competition since last season.

BBC Sport take a look at the new rules.

    • Clubs can admit the temporary replacement of just one outfield player who is ruled out for an extended period of time, with a long-term injury or illness - applicable during the league phase until matchday six.
    • Teams that are ranked one to four after the league phase will play the second leg of the quarter-final stages at home. For the semi-final, teams ranked one and two will also play the second leg at home.
    • Uefa have brought forward the kick-off time for the Champions League final to 17:00 BST from the 2025-26 season onwards.

I think Newcastle pace attack is going to cause Barca the world of problems tonight, particularly with their high line that they play.

Man City v Napoli (20:00 BST)

There were loud cheers at the Etihad Stadium when Kevin de Bruyne's name was read out earlier.

The reaction was less positive for Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund.

I suspect all three are fully motivated for their own different reasons tonight.

  20. How does the Champions League format work?published at 19:54 BST

    Ask Me Anything

The Champions League was revamped before the 2024-25 season with a new 36-team league phase.

In the expanded tournament each side plays eight different teams - four at home and four away - in the league phase.

Teams who finish in the top eight automatically qualify for the last 16, while those placing ninth to 24th will compete in a two-legged knockout play-off for the chance to join them.

Sides who finish 25th or lower will be eliminated - and will not drop into the Europa League.
