    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

Marcus Rashford had six shots, 10 touches in the opposition box, made five dribbles and created two chances tonight, the first time he's had all those totals in a Champions League match.

On record since 2008-09, the only other Barcelona players to have those numbers in a Champions League match are: Lionel Messi (17 times), Andres Iniesta (once), Luis Suarez (twice), Neymar (three) and Lamine Yamal (once).

  5. 'Flick sees Rashford as striker'published at 22:50 BST 18 September

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

All Barcelona fans heard was about the time at Manchester United where people seemed to still celebrate, based on social media this is, the fact that he wasn't scoring, that he wasn't at his best at Barcelona, that he hasn't shown the level that he's got. I don't know why Man Utd fans are rejoicing when he doesn't succeed because they've still got to buy him, he's on loan

But in any case what Barcelona coaches had seen was a shy guy. It has been difficult to get through to him as he was somebody that's been heard and wouldn't open up very easily.

He didn't have the kind of passion or whatever it is that Raphinha or Lamine have when they don't start the game but as Hansi Flick has said, they've seen his quality. And the interesting thing is they see him more of a nine.

They see that because he shows flashes of his ability on the left-hand side with the ball but without the ball he tends to forget that he has all this stuff to do and that's no good because that wing becomes very easy to attack.

    FT: Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 Galatasaray

Tonight Galatasaray’s Leroy Sane became the first player in Champions League history to play for four clubs and score or assist on his debut for each of them.

One for the CV I'm sure.

    FT: Man City 2-0 Napoli

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland scored his 50th goal on his 49th appearance in the Champions League, reaching half a century of goals in at least 13 appearances fewer than any other player in the competition’s history (Ruud van Nistelrooy - 62 games).

There were doubts. People were thinking, they haven't watched Aston Villa much in the last six months in Spain and they didn't realise he had turned a corner already. Mentally, physically he started to be more confident.

He learned the positional game that Barcelona play through Unai Emery and the injury didn't allow him to perhaps peak but in any case Barcelona fans had not seen that.

  12. 'The game was ruined because of this red card'published at 22:36 BST 18 September

    FT: Man City 2-0 Napoli

    Napoli

Napoli manager Antonio Conte, speaking to TNT Sports, said: "It's difficult to play against Manchester City 11 v 11 and after 20 minutes it is impossible with 10 men. Defensively we were really good but with their two goals we can do much better, but I don't have anything to tell my players - the commitment, the attitude was good.

"If it had continued 11 v 11 you could see another game in my opinion. We're talking about Manchester City, a fantastic team and we have to recover and prepare to play the next game. I come back to Italy with the mentality of the team and I like the way they suffered together but we can't concede two goals.

"We need to think about the next game in the league and I think we can do well in the Champions League."

On the red card, he said: "Honestly I did not see the situation. When you have a red card after 20 minutes you are dressing the game in one way. The game was ruined because of this red card. I don't know if it was right. The referee got the decision and we have to accept it."

On the decision to substitute Kevin de Bruyne following that red card: "It was the only option I could do. I was really, really sorry for him as it's the game against his old team but Kevin understood very well. I had only this decision, this option."

  13. 'We're going to Arsenal with a good feeling'published at 22:35 BST 18 September

    FT: Man City 2-0 Napoli

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports: "Yes, it was [a perfect start to the Champions League campaign]. We play a lot of minutes against 10. Italian teams are unbelievable [at defending]. I've faced them many many times in the Champions League. The resilience, the focus...I admire them so much.

"I'm very pleased. It's been a tough week [Manchester derby plus Napoli] and we have an incredibly tough challenge on Sunday [against Arsenal] but we are going there with a good feeling."

On running out of different things to say about Erling Haaland: "Me too."

On Jeremy Doku's goal: "In small spaces, five metres, he is unstoppable. Really, really good."

  14. 'These nights are only magical for us if we win'published at 22:32 BST 18 September

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe told TNT Sports: "Disappointing. We were really in the game. I never felt we were out of it. I'm disappointed we didn't score the first goal. That was criucial. We had the chances to do it. It was a whole-hearted gutsy display but maybe lacking the quality to get us the win.

"We wanted to create a difficult environment with high octane football. I think it was there. We didn't get the bounce of the ball off the presses.

"The chances were there in the first half. Against teams like this you won't get many. We got punished.

"Of course we can do better for both [goals]. The first more than the second. Disappointed he was allowed the cross [for the first]. Disappointed with how the ball arrived to him for the second.

"It was a good performance, strong effort. These nights are only magical for us if we win. But we'll learn and grow our game from nights like this.

"We kept going until the end. That's what we pride ourselves on. They managed the extra time well - we were desperate for the ball but couldn't get it off them."

Eddie Howe, Manager of Newcastle United, looks dejected as he is spoken to by Graeme Jones, Coach of Newcastle United, after the team's defeat in the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD1 match between Newcastle United FC and FC Barcelona at St James' Park on September 18, 2025 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.Image source, Getty Images
  15. 'We got the goal which is testament to our mentality'published at 22:29 BST 18 September

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

    Newcastle United

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon told TNT Sports: "Really tough game. Top team. I felt we had the better moments but they kept possession. They made it really difficult for us to do our usual press and they controlled the game through that.

"They did very well at keeping the ball. Pedri and De Jong were fantastic.

"It's a top level. Rashford scored two goals out of nowhere. It's got to be the same for us and take the opportunities when they're presented to us.

"That's natural being human beings, 2-0 down to Barca feels like an uphill battle. We got the goal which is testament to our mentality. We were knackered.

"We can be proud of how we played. We gave it our best against one of the top teams in the planet. I didn't think there was much in the game. We had the better moments but we need to put them away."

  16. 'It's so refreshing to play with these players'published at 22:26 BST 18 September

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

    Barcelona

Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford told TNT Sports: "[Playing for Barca is an] amazing experience. I've always been a huge admirer of Barcelona. We want to win as much as possible.

"They [fans] want to see the team win and play good football. This isn't an easy place to play football. THe first half was cagey. It's very difficult to play against this team.

"It was a split second, I felt there was a gap. I thought try to get a shot off. Their player was trying to block it so I tried to lift it. I knew when I caught it it would take the keeper some going to stop it.

"100% I'm full of excitement. I'm very motivated and determined. The quality we have in the team excites me. It's so refreshing to play with these players."

On Hansi Flick: "He's a top coach, a top man manager."

On their Champions League ambitions: "It's only to win it. Nothing else is on our minds. We know how tough the competition is."

What I've seen from Barcelona that I haven't seen this season, strong in both boxes, Joan Garcia intervening when he had to and up front they were efficient.

The game management was absolutely outstanding.

  19. 'Rashford worked hard tonight'published at 22:16 BST 18 September

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

    Dion Dublin
Former Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at St. James' Park

    On Marcus Rashford's first goal:

It's a very good header. It makes it so much easier, the cross comes at the right height, he's coming into an area where he's in the centre of the 18-yard box and he can go into any corner he wants to go into. But he knows the goalkeeper is going to have to go to the near post because the cross is coming from the right.

He guides it past the keeper's right shoulder. It's an easy header but you've got to be able to get into those positions to make it look easy.

Marcus Rashford worked hard tonight. There wasn't quite a smile, there was a smirk. But he worked hard, he got his goals, the second one was outstanding but he worked hard for the first.
