Samson Tovide inspired Colchester to a 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury and a first win of the season.

U's midfielder Arthur Read sent a 20th-minute effort over the crossbar and Shrews striker John Marquis drove into the box and skipped past two defenders before getting a shot off on the half-hour, but his effort was deflected for a corner.

Sam Clucas' corner reached Will Boyle at the front post five minutes later but his headed effort was parried by Matt Macey.

Colchester found the breakthrough just before the hour when Tovide was played through and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Tommy McDermott was shown a red card in the 66th minute following a clumsy tackle on Teddy Bishop.

Colchester doubled their lead in the 83rd minute when Kyreece Lisbie latched onto a wayward pass and drove into the box before converting from close range.
