Ange Postecoglou on replacing Nuno: "It's the nature of football. You don't really know what circumstances you'll take over. Until Steve Cooper took over the club, they weren't looking as though they were going to be in the Premier League. They've had two excellent managers who have done fantastic work.

"You certainly don't know when these things come to an end. I certainly didn't think I would finish up after winning a trophy."

Forest boss Ange Postecoglou said: "It developed over the weekend but came to a head on the Monday. My staff were in different parts of the world. We had to make some quick decisions. They got me at a good time, I'd just done the school run. From my perspective, once we'd got into discussions over the weekend, it didn't take too much for me to realise it was a great opportunity."

    • “Usually in my second season, I win things"
    • "The assist is the most useless statistic in world football"

  9. 'I’ll bear that responsibility'published at 13:28 BST

Arsenal v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 12:30 BST)

Here's what Ange Postecoglou said to Forest TV after being appointed the new boss:

“When you look at what the club has achieved in recent times, it’s an outstanding feat to be where we are right now. Other clubs that have won promotion have struggled to stay in the league, but in a short space of time we’re back in Europe and competing for honours, which is a great credit to everyone involved.

“I get a sense that the club wants more and that’s certainly what I want, so I think it’s a really exciting time.

“I understand the history of this football club and I understand there’s a responsibility there, and I’ll bear that responsibility. I’m honoured and I’m humbled, but more importantly I’m determined to make sure this football club takes its rightful place.”

Marinakis is no mug and I wonder if he would have appointed Ange instead of Nuno when Cooper left - if Ange was available. I got the impression that Nuno sealed his own fate.

  12. 'Ange has the credentials'published at 13:19 BST

Arsenal v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 12:30 BST)

Here is what Nottingham Forest's owner Evangelos Marinakis said about the appointment of Ange Postecoglou.

"We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies," said Marinakis.

"His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.

"After gaining promotion to the Premier League, then building consistently season after season to secure European football, we now must take the right step to compete with the very best and challenge for trophies.

"Ange has the credentials and the track record to do this, and we are excited he is joining us on our ambitious journey."

  13. 'Ange is not the right fit'published at 13:16 BST

No, Ange just isn't the right fit. I respect his record but in terms of his personality and style for most of last year it was dour and depressing. Without the backing of the fans, this appointment is a train crash.

First up for Ange Postecoglou is a trip back to north London but to the red side.

  15. 'There's a buzz for Ange'published at 13:06 BST

It's a busy media suite at the City Ground.

That comes as no surprise ahead of Ange Postecoglou's unveiling in the next hour.

The former Tottenham boss will take a stroll on the City Ground pitch for pictures and TV shots before speaking to the press ahead of Nottingham Forest's trip to Arsenal on Saturday.

There's understandably more of a buzz ahead - there always is ahead of a manager's unveiling - with an Australian TV crew here to capture Postecoglou's arrival.

His appointment has been met with some scepticism by Forest fans after Nuno Espirito Santo took them from relegation candidates back to Europe for the first time in 30 years.

Yet Nuno himself had to win supporters over after he replaced the popular Steve Cooper in December 2023 and he did that very well.

  16. Can Angeball work at Forest?published at 13:01 BST

Has there been a bigger vibe shift in Premier League history than Forest appointing Ange Postecoglou as Nuno Espirito Santo's successor?

Reader, I don't think there has.

But that's not the question here.

The question is, will Postecoglou be able to succeed with his brand of football at the City Ground given how they played under Nuno?

  17. 'He'll take us from Betis to Barnsley'published at 12:55 BST

Nottingham Forest have wasted no time in getting head coach Ange Postecoglou through the doors of the City Ground.

At present, our poll suggests 68% of you don't think Postecoglou is the right man for the Reds, so we asked for your views on his appointment and on how he can win the fanbase over.

Fosi: Sir, you have lost the plot. Ange is a total waste of time - he has no idea on systems or defending so Championship here we come. This is stupidity at its worst!

Bob: I look forward to the Forest players picking up lots of injuries with the aggressive high press that Ange will play...

Dave: I can reel off several managers I'd rather have had, Nuno included, but it doesn't matter now. This stinks of the mid-90s implosion to me. I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt, but my gut is saying we will be going from Betis to Barnsley in short order.

Unfortunately for Postecoglou, he doesn't boast the best record against the Gunners with three losses and a draw during his time with Tottenham.

We're about to enter the fourth game week of the new Premier League season and we already have a Manchester derby on our hands.
