More from former Juventus and Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after he announced his retirement.

The 34-year-old was linked with a move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr earlier this summer but negotiations broke down, reported the Athletic.

"I left Warsaw, my hometown in June of 2006 to join Arsenal with one dream - to make a living out of football," he added on social media.

"I’ve made friends for life, created unforgettable memories and met people who have made an incredible impact on my life. Everything that I have and everything that I am I owe to the beautiful game of football…"

  3. Gauld earns first Scotland call-up in 10 yearspublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 27 August

Vancouver Whitecaps captain Ryan Gauld is in line for a Scotland debut after being named in Steve Clarke's squad to face Poland and Portugal in the Nations League next month.

Gauld, 28, was previously called up to the senior squad in 2014 but did not feature under then-manager Gordon Strachan.

Sturm Graz defender Max Johnston and Liverpool forward Ben Doak are others who could win their first Scotland caps, while Kilmarnock's Robby McCrorie is preferred to Craig Gordon and Liam Kelly in the goalkeeping department.

John Souttar returns to the squad having missed the disappointing European Championship campaign, as Clarke largely sticks with players he knows and trusts.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has been quizzed about a few rumours concerning two of his players, Ivan Toney and Yoane Wissa.

On both topics, Frank remained tight-lipped, he said: "Today we have nothing to say about Ivan Toney."

Frank also said he "didn't know" that a reported bid from Nottingham Forest for Wissa had been rejected as he was "out training".

  6. USA still waiting for Pochpublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 27 August

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It had been anticipated Mauricio Pochettino would have been confirmed as the new USA coach by now.

There was a feeling it would be done by a US Soccer Board meeting last week but that clearly did not happen.

Now we are getting close to the squad announcement for next month's matches against Canada and New Zealand.

If Pochettino can be installed in the next few days, it would be helpful for everyone but there is a belief in US circles there is an issue with Chelsea that remains unresolved, even though the Blues deny this.

Poland and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has announced his retirement.

The 34-year-old said on Instagram: "What this new path will bring for me only the time will tell. But if the last 18 years have taught me anything it is that nothing is impossible and believe me, I’m going to dream BIG!"

The former Arsenal goalkeeper made 84 appearances for his country after making his senior debut in 2009.

  9. Luton and Hull in talks with Norwich for Kamarapublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 27 August

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Hull and Luton remain in talks with Norwich for winger Abu Kamara.

Both Championship sides have made offers in the region of £2.5m for the 21-year-old.

The Tigers are still looking for attacking reinforcements, having sold Jaden Philogene back to Aston Villa this summer, while Luton are close to selling winger Chiedozie Ogbene to Ipswich for around £8m.

Portsmouth, where Kamara spent last season on loan to help them win the League One title, have also been interested this summer but are struggling to meet the asking price.

Kamara, who has made six senior appearances for Norwich, handed in a transfer request this month and BBC Sport understands he would prefer a move to Hull.

He has made two substitute appearances in the Championship this season and scored in Norwich's 4-3 Carabao Cup win over Stevenage.

He has a year left on his contract with the option to extend for a further 12 months.

Norwich sold midfielder Gabriel Sara to Galatasaray, forward Jonathan Rowe to Marseille - initially on loan with an obligation worth £17m to make it permanent - and striker Adam Idah to Celtic for £9.5m so are under no financial pressure to sell.

With additional reporting from BBC Sport's Alex Howell.

Manchester United were in need of a new club captain after the departure of Katie Zelem this summer.

They have now given the armband to England defender Maya Le Tissier, who joined from Brighton in 2022.

The 22-year-old has become a mainstay in their defence and was a key player last season.

Academy graduate and Euro 2022 winner Ella Toone – who was one of the favourites to be named captain – has been named vice-captain.

  13. 'Maresca is not keen on messing around'published at 13:49 British Summer Time 27 August

We're just a few Enzo Maresca press conferences in to the new Chelsea manager's reign, but we're already starting to get an idea of what he's all about.

Gone is the cuddly, encouraging atmosphere that Mauricio Pochettino brought to the table. Maresca is much more precise, quite blunt and not keen on messing around. While he is determined not to be painted simply as a knock-off Pep Guardiola, there's no denying he has the same air of intensity when it comes to talking about football.

The head coach has a long way to go in getting this team back to the top level, but Sunday's result was an important step. His side got a few lucky breaks, and there still were obvious issues to sort out, but an impressive result like that buys plenty of time and freedom to get to work on fixing them.

Already there are debates about what changes he might make to a winning team for that game. Romeo Lavia needs has to come back in to give the midfield a bit more body - but who do you leave out?

Up front there are similar questions. Mykhailo Mudryk has surely played his way out of contention now, with Pedro Neto likely to replace him. But how do you fit Neto, Cole Palmer, Christopher Nkunku and hat-trick scorer Noni Madueke into the same attack?

  17. 'Dyche's comments have been somewhat mistimed and unhelpful'published at 13:29 British Summer Time 27 August

A week is a long time in football, just not long enough in the world of Everton.

Whatever the reason – a stack of first team injuries, tactics or simply a lack of self-belief – Saturday’s showing at Tottenham has done little to lift the mood amongst the fan base.

There was a sense of optimism prior to the season starting, which has been swiftly wiped out after two successive defeats and very little in the way of attacking threat.

We've been here before. The score mirrors that of the second game of last season away at Aston Villa. It doesn’t make it any more acceptable or easy to swallow, but things can and will improve – hopefully.

After years of relegation fears, mismanagement and financial austerity, Everton fans are on the edge. It feels as if we are only ever a couple of defeats away from a crisis.

The manager's comments since the start of the season have been somewhat mistimed and unhelpful. You wonder whether living in this recent version of the Everton bubble has got to him somewhat.

The scenes at London Euston on Saturday evening between a couple of fans and the team is something that not only needs no repetition, but also shouldn’t serve as a reflection of the vast majority of Evertonians.

This is a time for unity.

We are only two games into a new season, with a great chance to put things right this week.

Two home games against Doncaster and Bournemouth are the perfect opportunities to right the wrongs of Brighton and Tottenham.

We've proven countless times we are stronger together. Now is the time for us, the manager and the players to prove it.

I feel sorry for Sean Dyche, since he has been in management it has never been plain sailing.

I felt sorry for Everton against Brighton as they played well in the first 20-minutes, but they ended up losing 3-0 – Ashley Young got sent off, so that was the end of that game.

Tottenham can do what they did to Everton to any team, Spurs can overwhelm teams. It has not been a great start, but I don’t see it to be any reason to panic.

They are a squad which is more than comfortable of staying in the Premier League, I agree with Dyche that there does need to be some calm.

Sean Dyche was so calm and it's because he has been through it his whole career.

With Dyche no matter how many points we lost he was so calm and the players fed off the fact if the manager isn't worried, why should I be worried?
