On preparing for tomorrow's EFL Cup game against Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest, Howe said: "We will try and play a really strong team; we want to progress. We will make changes as well at the same time, because we have a squad that I think enables me to do so, while not weakening the quality, we saw the strength of our bench on Sunday, which made a huge difference.

"There are a lot of players eager to show what they can do. We are determined to do well; this competition has been good for us. Last year we were incredibly close to another semi-final."

On any potential transfer movement before the window closes on Friday, Howe said: "At the moment, keeping players [this week] is a success, as I sit here today. In terms of incomings, that work's still going on behind the scenes. A few days left, I think everyone's just trying their best to improve the squad."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe spoke to the media earlier today before Newcastle's game against Nottingham Forrest in the EFL Cup.

On the likelihood of Tonali playing in tomorrow's fixture, after returning from a 10-month ban, Howe said: "He'll definitely be in the squad providing he comes through training today.

"He's fit. He just hasn't had the match time, the 11 v 11, which players will tell you is the most important thing within the game. He's done everything else. He's worked incredibly hard with the sports science team to be on top of his fitness and to make sure he's fitter than he was when he was banned."

BBC Sport understands Smith is currently in advanced talks to take on a role elsewhere.

Former Wales assistant manager Smith has been in charge of the Vixens since 2021 and guided the club to their first ever league title as they won promotion to the Women's Super League in 2023, before their subsequent relegation after one season in the top flight.

  11. Kingsley Coman on the move?published at 11:05 British Summer Time 27 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It is not completely certain but it is looking like Kingsley Coman might be leaving Bayern Munich before Friday's transfer deadline.

The 28-year-old has been with Bayern for seven years but it seems he has decided now is the right time to look for a new challenge.

Coman has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia but it seems there could also be a bit of Premier League interest in the France international.

One to keep an eye on over the rest of the week.

  13. Wolves snub Feyenoord's Traore interestpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 27 August

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Feyenoord have enquired about Wolves' Boubacar Traore but the midfielder is unlikely to leave Molineux as it stands.

The Eredivisie club asked about a possible loan move but, unless Wolves bring in new midfielders, Traore will stay in the Midlands.

Traore played for Mali at the Olympics and was the final squad member to return ahead of the start of the season.

He did not make the squad for the opening day defeat at Arsenal and was an unused substitute in Sunday's 6-2 loss at home Chelsea.

The 23-year-old initially signed on loan from Metz in 2022 before making the move permanent a year later. He has made 38 appearances, scoring once.

Feyenoord have already taken left-back Hugo Bueno on loan from Wolves this summer.

Wolves are focused on bringing in players ahead of Friday's transfer deadline with talks with Arsenal on-going over a move for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

They also had a £20m offer rejected by Burnley for winger Luca Koleosho last week.

  14. 'So many red flags' - Townsend's Antalyaspor move stallspublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 27 August

Andros Townsend applauds the fans while playing for LutonImage source, Getty Images

Andros Townsend has opted for a move away from Rob Edwards' Luton side to join Turkish team Antalyaspor.

However, when speaking on the Monday Night Club, he revealed "the contract is signed" but Antalyaspor are unable to announce him because of a transfer ban.

Townsend, 33, joined Luton last October on an initial short-term contract.

"Luton wanted me to stay, but they were supportive of what I wanted me to do," Townsend said.

"Three days before the start of the season I got a phone call from Antalyaspor saying they have an offer for me but I had only 24 hours to respond as we have a transfer ban coming and we need to get you in before the transfer ban."

Towsend added "so many red flags" have come up in regards getting the deal done.

"Every time I ask them [Antalyaspor] they say 'the contract is signed and you are our player'.

"So many red flags you wouldn’t believe it. Something was telling me this is the right move for you to experience something new in Antalyaspor, which is a beautiful city."

  20. Palace closing in on Nketiahpublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 27 August

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

Crystal Palace are closing in on the signing of Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah for a deal worth in the region of £30m.

The Eagles have pursued the England international for a long time and asked about his availability in January but he stayed with Arsenal.

The deal is believed to be structured with a fee in the region of £25m upfront with £5m in add ons.

The 25-year-old had been in talks with Nottingham Forest but a deal was not able to be agreed and that has allowed Palace to move to the front of the queue.

There had also been interest in Nketiah from Ligue 1 side Marseille but again, a move did not materialise.

The forward has not played for Arsenal this season and has been an unused substitute in both of their Premier League games.

Nketiah has scored 38 goals in 168 games for Arsenal and his current contract runs until 2027.
