Frank Onyeka wants to leave Brentford but needs to be allowed to leave on loan to pursue interest from clubs like Valencia in Spain before transfer deadline day.

The Nigeria international, 26, is currently only allowed to leave on a permanent deal but is seeking more game time away from west London.

Valencia, Valladolid and Las Palmas have all registered serious interest for Onyeka - who was a late substitute in both of the club’s matches against Crystal Palace and Liverpool this season.

But the three Spanish clubs can only afford to sign him on a season-long loan, with help needed to pay a portion of his wages.

Italian club Lecce and Russian giants CSKA Moscow have also previously registered loan bids in the last few months.

Onyeka's primary motivation to leave Brentford is to become a regular starter after over a year on the bench under manager Thomas Frank.

I am feeing positive about Brighton.

Once again they have been positive in the transfer market.

They have stolen Celtic's best player, Matt O'Riley - who will do well for Brighton - he's an intelligent footballer.

I haven't seen a lot of Yankuba Minteh, but first game of the season, blimey he caught my eye. For Fabian Hurzeler to come in that is one hell of a start and it's the same old Brighton, fair play to them.

Listen to the Monday Night Club here.

New Brighton signing Matt O'Riley says manager Fabian Hurzeler's "brutal honesty" helped him make the decision to join the Seagulls.

O'Riley's £25m move from Scottish champions Celtic was confirmed on Monday, with Hurzeler calling the 23-year-old's abilities as a box-to-box midfielder "special".

"Very, very happy," O'Riley told club media in his first interview as a Brighton player. "It's definitely taken a while.

"It got a little bit stressful the past couple of weeks if I'm being honest because the talks were ongoing for a good couple of months, but I'm just really happy to be here now.

"I spoke to the manager as well and he did a really good job of selling the club and we had a really nice chat. He told me where I would fit in in terms of the structure.

"I spoke to a lot of people in regards to the whole feel about the place and the people. I got the impression that everybody was really, really nice and that's something I'd like to be a part of.

"I liked his honesty. He didn't just butter me up like he could have done because I was in a position where there were other clubs looking at me.

"He was just brutally honest in the sense of he can help me with a lot of things as well that I need to improve on.

"I liked the fact he didn't just speak about the positive things because I'm someone that would like to improve a lot and coming to a place like this where everyone wants to improve is something that I was really looking forward to."

  5. Man City agree £21.2m Saudi Arabia move for Cancelopublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 27 August

    BBC Sport

Manchester City have agreed a £21.2m deal with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal to sell defender Joao Cancelo.

Personal terms are not thought to be a problem, although Cancelo is yet to agree to the move.

If he does, the 30-year-old is expected to sign a three-year contract, ending his five-year stay at Etihad Stadium.

City manager Pep Guardiola said this month Cancelo could play for the club again.

However, the disagreement which led to Cancelo spending time on loan with Bayern Munich and Barcelona over the past 18 months was always likely to prove a major stumbling block.

Cancelo has not been involved in City's two Premier League games this season.

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It is understood PSG have also negotiated a 10% sell-on clause as part of Manuel Ugarte's proposed move to Manchester United, with both clubs privately claiming they are happy with the deal.

United sources say they identified Ugarte early in the transfer window and were patient in their negotiations over a player who made the Copa America team of the tournament squad following Uruguay’s run to the final, where they were eventually beaten by Argentina.

Should the transfer go through as expected, Ugarte will become United's fifth signing of the summer and take their overall spending this summer to in excess of £190m. United have spent nearly £600m on new players since Erik ten Hag was appointed as manager in 2022.

  7. Who is Ugarte?published at 09:47 British Summer Time 27 August

So, just who is Manuel Ugarte?

Last season the defensive midfielder made 25 appearances for Paris St-Germain in their Ligue 1 winning season and played eight times in the Champions League.

He also won the Coupe de France.

The 23-year-old, who played at the Copa America for Uruguay this summer, moved to France last season after two impressive seasons in Portugal for Sporting Lisbon.

Manchester United have agreed a a 50m euros (£42.29m) fee for the midfielder, with the deal moving at the same time as Scott McTominay's proposed 30m euros (£25.37m) switch to Napoli.

Overall, is this an upgrade for Erik ten Hag's midfield options?

Former Real Madrid and Everton playmaker James Rodriguez has joined La Liga club Rayo Vallecano as a free agent.

The Colombian, 33, has been without a club since leaving Brazilian side Sao Paulo this summer.

He was named player of the tournament at the Copa America in July after providing six assists in Colombia's run to the final, where they were beaten by Argentina.

Rayo Vallecano are eighth in La Liga having begun the season with a win and a draw. They finished 17th last season.

Rodriguez won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup and signed for Real Madrid later that summer.

It's promising to be a busy few days on the transfer front at Burnley.

The Championship club are trying to tie up deals for Manchester United wide player Hannibal Mejbri and Bournemouth forward Jaidon Anthony.

Hannibal has had a couple of loan moves already and whilst he figured on Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States, he never looked like holding onto a permanent place in Erik ten Hag's plans.

Anthony spent last season on loan at Leeds and helped the Yorkshire side reach the Championship play-off final, where they were beaten by Southampton.

Sven was just a lovely, lovely man with so much power and so much influence. He just had this beautiful way about him. I was probably too young to appreciate him.

This guy cared, this guy had a passionate interest in how we were as humans.

He was an absolute superstar everywhere he went and he just owned it, just oozed class and it didn't look like effort. These are the things I think about when I think of him.

I can remember going back to the 2002 World Cup and those tournaments with England, which were really intimidating for me back then - the younger me working for Radio 1, the England press-pack was really difficult, footballers were intimidating and Sven just had this amazing ability to put you at ease.

He had that Golden Generation we know that. It didn't win a tournament but it also came so close.

It was almost as if Sven had shown us the water but was not quite able to make us drink out of it, but boy did he get us ready for that.

All those players who played for him at England level said it wasn't because of him that they didn't win a trophy, they said he gave them everything that was needed.

Tributes have been paid by a number of England players who were part of the so-called 'Golden Generation' under Eriksson.

Striker Peter Crouch said: "What a great person he was.

"Sven gave me my England debut when plenty doubted it. I will forever be grateful to him. He will be missed."

John Terry, who was also given his debut by Eriksson, described him as a "great manager and superb man-manager".

Midfielder Frank Lampard said Eriksson was "always there for you on and off the pitch".

"I will always be grateful to him for the trust and support he gave me in my England career," he said.

Sven managed to keep people happy, humble and honest. That was one thing that he asked for.

He didn't ask for a whole lot from us as people other than just show respect, that real calm soft word and you couldn't not respect and behave under him.

You didn't want to cross Sven, not because you were scared of him, but because you didn't want to let the guy down.

England legend David Beckham has paid tribute to Sven-Goran Eriksson.

"Sven, thank you for always being the person you have always been, passionate, caring, calm and a true gentleman," he said.

"I will be forever grateful for you making me your captain."

Beckham posted his message on social media alongside a video of the pair from his visit to see Eriksson earlier this year.

Eriksson revealed in January he had been diagnosed with cancer and given "at best" a year to live.

"We laughed, we cried and we knew we were saying goodbye," Beckham said.

"I will forever hold these last memories of this day with you and your family.

"Thank you Sven and in your last words to me "It will be OK"."

  20. Zouma set for medical before Saudi movepublished at 08:24 British Summer Time 27 August

    Simon Stone & Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport

West Ham defender Kurt Zouma is set to have a medical as he closes in on a move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Orouba.

Zouma had agreed a move to the United Arab Emirates this summer but that collapsed after Zouma failed a medical.

The Hammers gave permission for the 29-year-old to remain in the region in an attempt to secure another deal.

The precise terms of the switch are still being worked out but Zouma will have a medical and, providing he is given clearance, will complete the move.

France defender Zouma has made 103 appearances for the Hammers since joining from Chelsea in a £29m deal in 2021.
