  1. 'Sacked in the morning' - Wolves boss O'Neil under firepublished at 11:48 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December

    FT: Everton 4-0 Wolves

"You're getting sacked in the morning." That was the chant belted out from one corner of Goodison Park on Wednesday evening.

It was being aimed in the direction of Gary O'Neil, and it was coming from his own team's supporters.

The Wolves boss stood helplessly in his technical area as he witnessed his hapless side crumble to a 4-0 defeat against Everton, heaping on pressure and misery as the fans turned against him.

It was the type of performance and result which has been known to cause struggling managers before him to be shown the door, and O'Neil is now seemingly clinging to his job.

The ex-Bournemouth boss went over to applaud the travelling fans at full-time, but he was roundly jeered by the unhappy following.

"I go over there to see them because I appreciate every single one of the Wolves fanbase," said O'Neil. "They have given me unbelievable support since I arrived at the football club."

It really doesn’t matter how the goals go in just as long as they do go in. All this Arsenal corner chat is just jealousy I reckon and I’m not even an Arsenal fan. And if I was and we won the league through corners alone, I wouldn’t care one bit!

  3. Double injury blow for Citypublished at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December

    FT: Man City 3-0 Forest

    Manchester City

The win over Forest came at a cost for Manchester City after Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake were forced off.

Ake suffered a hamstring issue and manager Pep Guardiola indicated it could be a serious injury, with neither likely to face Crystal Palace this weekend.

"The problems continued with Manuel and Nathan," Pep Guardiola said post-match. "Nathan doesn’t look good. We will see tomorrow. He could not continue and we will see in three days what will happen. I am sad for Nathan.

"Manu maybe in Turin [when City play Juventus next week]. Nathan will be longer."

  4. De Bruyne 'flying from the get go'published at 11:38 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December

Former Man City defender on the Football Daily podcast

He [Kevin de Bruyne] was flying from the get go. He was involved with everything, he was driving his team forward. A goal and an assist in your first start in so many games. He got a standing ovation when he was coming off and there was no surprise whatsoever. The fans really rallied behind him. It's a credit to him, it's the work he's put in off the field, his rehab and he looked sharp tonight and his team definitely got him the reward off the back of it.

  5. A needed boost for Dokupublished at 11:35 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December

FT: Man City 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester City

Amid Manchester City's recent under-performance, Jeremy Doku is one of several City players not to hit their best form.

The Belgian has struggled for minutes this campaign, with 530 in the league all season. Between 26 October and 23 November, Doku played just five minutes across City's four league matches.

But a goal and assist last night against Forest means Doku has doubled his tally in both of those stats for this league campaign.

    Amazon Prime

Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, speaking to Amazon Prime after the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest: "It's been a tough time. We have to accept the challenge and I think we did well today.

"It's been a hard period but we have to accept the challenge. The Premier League is getting harder and harder and every team is tough to play.

"Everybody is taking points off everybody. We have to improve. First we have to try to win games and we'll see in a couple of months where we are."

Speaking about De Bruyne's performance, City boss Pep Guardiola added: "He was excellent, especially in the first half and even the second, he was really, really good.

"The presence he has is so important. Not today but for many, many years since I arrived, he has an incredible influence on our game."

  8. 'Integral' De Bruyne 'one of best we've seen'published at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December

FT: Manchester City 3-0 Nottingham Forest

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium

As Kevin de Bruyne made his way off the pitch after being replaced by Rico Lewis 16 minutes from the end of Manchester City's 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, Pep Guardiola grabbed the Belgian and pulled him into an embrace.

It was like a father offering affection to his son at a job well done.

De Bruyne responded with a smile of satisfaction before continuing on his way to the top of the small terrace of City benches.

A day earlier, Guardiola scoffed at the suggestions of Sky Sports duo Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville that there was some kind of rift between the boss and his star man.

Why on earth, Guardiola countered, would he leave out someone who is capable of delivering moments like no-one else, even in his star-studded squad?

Finally back on the pitch to start a Premier League game for the first time since August, De Bruyne proved exactly what Guardiola meant.

Last night was City's first win in all competitions since 26 October, when they beat Southampton 1-0 at home.

Did I hear people complaining about Arsenal gaining results from a set piece? If truly you are a football fan you won't complain because set-pieces have put smiles on all of our faces. David Beckham's famous set piece against Greece which books England a ticket to the 2002 World Cup. Juninho's masterpiece for Lyon against Bayern Munich in the 2003 Champions League, Roberto Carlos' 33-yarder for Brazil vs. France in 1997, and Ronaldinho's set piece Brazil vs. England in 2002. So allow the Arsenal fans to enjoy their moments too.

It's going to be an interesting Christmas, that is normally a period of time you look at and say do you know what there's moves made at Christmas. If you have a good Christmas, you don't have to have a brilliant one, you just have to be really in there, nipping away at that deficit of points and picking up points on the road, all the usual stuff we say.

Being so dangerous at set pieces is a huge bonus for Arsenal. Not only do they get goals from it so regularly, but when opposition teams are preparing to play them, they’ll now need to sacrifice time spent working on their set up for open play to spend more time working on how to counter the threat from set pieces. A real headache for opposing managers!

  13. 'Spectacular' Arsenalpublished at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December

    Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United

    Lee Dixon
Former England defender on 5 Live Breakfast

I've never seen two players in Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka produce the same ball time and time after, it's not easy when it comes down to the pressure of a night like that and being able to stick it under the crossbar every single time, it's almost undefendable. You know it's coming but the delivery of it is just spectacular, it's basically you're organising a chaotic six yard box and they do it brilliantly well, absolutely wonderful to see, not if you're a United defender.

Fair play to them and what they've done on the training ground because it has become a thing and when something becomes a thing on a football pitch, people start getting scared of it, they start worrying about it.

    Southampton

It was a dismal Southampton performance against Chelsea which has meant they have not added to their point tally.

Even if they had beaten Chelsea, they would have remained bottom of the table as they are four points behind 19th Wolves.

Southampton have only recorded five points this season with just one win from 14 matches. That victory came against Everton last month.

    BBC Sport

The moments where it works are what the Saints boss wants to build on, but it all comes down to finding a balance in a competition as ruthless as the Premier League.

How long do you stick with this style of play before opting to be more pragmatic to try to get the points to stay up?

Or how long do the Sport Republic ownership stick with Martin before deciding a change is needed?

Martin has not once wavered from his philosophy and, from interactions with some players, they too seem adamant that this is how they play.

To Saints' credit they have made adjustments to their style in some games against tougher opposition but it is still yet to result in points.

However fans will be frustrated by some of the way in which goals are given away and when the ball is lost deep in their own territory. Supporters loudly booed at full time after defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday night.

Saints boss Martin 'very proud' despite heavy defeat

Southampton manager Russell Martin tried to focus on the positives after losing 5-1 to Chelsea.

He said: "I learned a lot about some people.

"Nathan Wood, James Bree and Joe Aribo were excellent - they have come in from not playing so much and been really outstanding and I'm proud of them for that.

"Some of the football that we played at 11 v 11 was amazing and we should have been 1-0 up. We conceded such poor goals but the response was brilliant and we were so in the game until a big moment (the sending-off) changed it."

Southampton boss Russell Martin has said that Jack Stephens' red card "cost" his side in their 5-1 defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Replays showed that the Saints captain pulled Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella by his hair as Southampton had an attacking corner.

Referee Tony Harrington referred to the pitchside monitor before showing Stephens a straight red card for the incident.

"I don't think anyone will be more disappointed than Jack," Martin said. "He'll be hurt more than anyone and it changed the game a bit for us tonight. I'm disappointed for him and us, it's a moment of madness that has really cost us."

This was Stephens' second sending-off of the season, having previously been dismissed when Manchester United won at St Mary's in September.

Stoke fans must be delighted! I'm not sure they are watching Arsenal and being reminded of Tony Pulis' bombers. Credit to Arsenal. They are being creative in every department and very tough to stop at their best.

For all those that are saying Arsenal play boring football and rely on set-pieces. Please watch the 5-1 victory against Sporting Lisbon. A side that hadn’t lost at home for over a year, we absolutely tore them apart with beautiful football.

    Southampton 1-5 Chelsea

    Amazon Prime

Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink told Amazon Prime about the possibility of Chelsea winning the Premier League: "When you're second, yes seven points difference you always have to fancy yourself. I think when you are playing for Chelsea that is what you have to aim for.

"That shirt brings trophies and expectations from the fans. The last 20 years they have been winning a lot of trophies.

"The last two or three years they have had a difficult time, now they are second, they are playing good football. It wasn't expected really from the bgeinning of the season but they are there now. You need to embrace it, you need to enjoy it. You also have to take the challenge and say 'here we are, let's go for it'."
