Ruben Amorim has finally overseen back-to-back Premier League wins as Manchester United manager.

United hadn't achieved that since winning their final two games of the 2023/24 season, a run of 13 non-consecutive wins.

They are the last of the 17 ever-present sides since the start of last season to win two in a row in the top flight.

Is the monkey off Amorim's back?

It was interesting and insightful listening to Ruben Amorim in his post-match press conference at Anfield yesterday.

In thanking the Manchester United supporters for their backing, which he described as 'not normal' he made a point of saying he knew 'you all', by which I presume he meant the media - both conventional and fan channels - were largely predicting he would be sacked before Christmas (some thought it would happen during the last international break even though sources close to Sir Jim Ratcliffe denied it).

Ratcliffe's comments about Amorim needing 'three years' has calmed that chatter to an extent but the United head coach knows it still exists.

He used his forum at Anfield to tell the media not to change - I assume because he uses it as motivation.

Amorim knows only too well Brighton are the next visitors to Old Trafford.

Brighton have won their last three away games against United and beaten them six times in their last eight meetings - one of the others was an FA Cup semi-final penalty shootout loss when they were by far the better team.

Amorim said he didn't know if his side had turned a corner yesterday and he was just concentrating on the next game.

It was probably a wise move.

This is a complete turnaround game.

I thought if United lose here, which they were more than likely to do when I saw the team sheet, I'm thinking Ruben Amorim is going into that Brighton game under real pressure with Nottingham Forest and Tottenham to come.

They've got a kickstart springboard from what they've done, because to win at Anfield is special in any season, to win here is the hardest ground. They should be really proud because it's a big achievement, but they've got to kick on from here.

So it's a great day for Manchester United, but let's see it again next Saturday night against Brighton.

We are all feeling a lot more positive about Man Utd after that result. I hope the manager goes home, I don't know if he likes a glass of wine but if he does I hope he has one and says "all you pundits out there, this one's for you!"

I hope he does, he deserves it. It's a massive win for him. People said before Sunderland that if he lost he might lose his job, but fair play to him, he's stuck in and things seem a little bit better. Really pleased for him.

What a moment for Ruben Amorim. He needed something, the pressure was building but a win at Anfield is huge.

It's a great place for Manchester United to win a game of football. It's a big period coming up, the manager is under pressure and they pulled something out of the bag and they have to make sure this is the start of something.

There is no better medicine than winning games. We all know the inconsistency Man Utd have had, they beat Sunderland just before and now beat Liverpool away - it's massive. Less than a month ago Manchester United's season appeared to be heading in an increasingly familiar direction.

A 3-1 defeat to Brentford was their third in six league outings, while they were already out of the League Cup following a penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby Town of League Two.

However, back-to-back league wins mean United have 13 points after eight games, and are just two points behind Liverpool in fourth place.

Ruben Amorim's side are only three points behind neighbours Manchester City, who thrashed them 3-0 last month.

Sunday's win was Manchester United's first away to Liverpool in the Premier League since January 2016.

Wayne Rooney scored the only goal in a 1-0 win, Louis van Gaal was in the United dugout, and Marcus Rashford was yet to make his Premier League debut.

United didn't win on any of their following nine league visits to Anfield, drawing five and losing four.

It's a gloomy Monday morning but that won't be stopping Manchester United fans from smiling today.

The contrast between Liverpool’s defensive statistics after eight league games of last season and this campaign are stark.

At this stage of 2024-25 they had let in just three goals, that has rocketed to 11 this time round as Arne Slot’s side have looked increasingly vulnerable at the back.

That tally of 11 conceded is five more than Sunderland have.

The Reds last kept a clean sheet against Burnley on 14 September and that is one of only two they have managed in 12 games in all competitions.

Set pieces are also a huge worry. The five goals the Reds have let in so far is only surpassed by struggling Nottingham Forest (six), Leeds United (six) and West Ham United (eight).

While since the beginning of May, the Reds have conceded two or more goals in more top-flight games than any other side, having done so in a remarkable eight of their 12 league fixtures in that time.

“We take a lot of risks,” Slot said after yesterday’s loss. “After the 62nd minute we had six or seven offensive players on the pitch. That’s maybe why our structure for the set-piece was not as perfect as we usually are.

"Usually we would have more defensive players on the pitch. Maybe it is a coincidence but it is not an excuse. We know we have to do better.”

Liverpool's fourth successive loss was barely thinkable after the ease with which they won last season's Premier League title, then built on that triumph by spending almost £450m on new talent.

The champions have been short of their best since the season started, with a series of dramatic wins snatched by late goals starting to become a distant memory after this latest defeat - insult added to injury by the fact it was inflicted by bitter rivals Manchester United at their Anfield fortress.

Liverpool's defensive vulnerability has been consistently exposed all season, with United taking fewer than two minutes to inflict punishment, although whether referee Oliver should have stopped play for Mac Allister's head injury is a serious point of debate.

It must be said Liverpool did not enjoy much luck, the woodwork struck three times, but they were, on too many occasions, ponderous and looking short of ideas - and also felt the wrath of their own supporters as frustrations grew.

Their last chance was a stoppage-time header Gakpo somehow diverted wide, leaving Liverpool's fans in despair and the United followers jubilant.

What was portrayed as a Liverpool blip now looks like it may be something more.

I know how difficult it is, I've been in teams that have won back-to-back Premier League titles, we won three in a row, and it's very difficult. I think they've got a bit complacent, there was a lot on Salah, Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold which took a lot of energy from people at Liverpool. I think they are missing Trent enormously.

I think the new players, Liverpool aren't as big as Man Utd in my opinion but they are a massive club around the world. Kerkez coming in from Bournemouth, Isak from Newcastle, they're struggling.
