Callum Jones' shot is well-blocked from 20 yards.

Dundee were able to stay in United's final third thanks to some hard work by Simon Murray, who hassled Bert Esselink and kept the pressure on.

With Rangers and Celtic toughing out a dull goalless draw at Ibrox, we'll be hoping for better fare at Dens Park.

  4. Two sides seeking lift offpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 31 August

    Aberdeen v Falkirk (15:00)

    Tyrone Smith
    BBC Scotland at Pittodrie

On a day that will be dominated by the Old Firm and Dundee derbies, Aberdeen versus Falkirk perhaps doesn’t look a game that will dominate the headlines – but make no mistake about its importance.

Both sides have played two games each and have yet to muster a win between them.

Aberdeen have had a tough start to the league campaign – against Heart of Midlothian and Celtic.

Now they have to get over the physical – and the mental – effects of their disappointing Europa League play-off exit at the hands of Romanian champions FCSB on Thursday.

Falkirk are realising how much tougher it is on their return to the Premiership and a win in the Granite City would certainly serve as a timely reminder that they are not simply here to make up on the numbers at Scottish football’s top table.

  5. Goal fest in Leith?published at 13:56 British Summer Time 31 August

    Hibernian v St Mirren (15:00)

    Brian McLauchlin
BBC Sport Scotland at Easter Road

After their gallant exploits in Warsaw in losing to Legia in midweek, the last thing Hibs would have been wishing for is a game against a very strong St Mirren side who have started the season in fine form.

The Easter Road outfit, though, have also started the domestic season well and if they have sufficiently recovered from the disappointment and travel we should be in for a cracker of a game.

Both teams are playing with a great deal of confidence and have players who know their way towards goal.

For the home side, Kieron Bowie and Martin Boyle have six between them, while the Buddies duo of Jonah Ayunga and Mikael Mandron have found the net on five occasions so far.

So a goal fest at Easter Road this afternoon? Hope so!

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin tells BBC Scotland: "The boys are really excited and looking forward to the game.

"Tomorrow morning, hopefully, the Dundee United supporters are going into work with the bragging rights in the bag."

As for the return of fit-again striker Zac Sapsford, Goodwin adds: "Really important. He's not at 100%, but credit to the boy and the type of character he is, he doesn't want to miss out on games like this."

There have been 18 goals in the last five meetings between Dundee (10 goals) and Dundee United (eight), an average of 3.6 per game.

However, Dundee have had the fewest shots (15) of any side in the Premiership this season so far.

  11. Encouraging signs?published at 13:41 British Summer Time 31 August

    Dundee v Dundee United (14:00)

Dundee have won the latest two city derbies, but United only have to go back to January for their last victory at Dens Park.

Both go into this game seeking their first league win of the season.

Indeed, the hosts are without a win in three outings overall, while United haven't won in five.

In saying that, away draws with Rangers and Kilmarnock have lifted the early season gloom around Steven Pressley's arrival as head coach at Dens Park, while United did match Rapid Vienna before losing out on Conference League qualifying on penalties.

  12. Double change for visiting Unitedpublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 31 August

    Dundee v Dundee United (14:00)

Kilmarnock were also United's last opponents and Jim Goodwin makes two changes to the side that lost 2-1 in the League Cup.

Craig Sibbald drops to the bench, while Max Watters is out, adding to the ever-growing list of players the manager cannot call on due to injruy.

Zac Sapsford replaces Watters up front, while Panutche Camara replaced Sibbald in the middle of the park.

United's 14th summer signing, forward Nikolaj Moller, who joined from St Gallen, goes into Goodwin's squad, starting on the bench,

Steven Pressley makes just one change to the Dundee side that drew 0-0 with Kilmarnock last time out.

New signing, Ethan Hamilton, goes straight into the starting XI after the midfielder's arrival from Lincoln City earlier this week.

He replaces Finlay Robertson, who is on the bench.
