Worst pitch had almost a trench at the edge of one goal area. Playing in heavy rain, it filled up and after one diving header, i disappeared under the surface.

  2. 'I was smiling from ear-to-ear'published at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March

Morgan Gibbs-White says Thomas Tuchel has been "incredible" with England's players - even though the midfielder was upset when the new head coach initially left him on the sidelines.

Nottingham Forest's Gibbs-White was told by Tuchel he would not be selected for England's opening 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

But following an injury to Chelsea's Cole Palmer on Sunday, Tuchel contacted Gibbs-White and he was called up for the games against Albania and Latvia.

"He phoned me up and said 'Are you still upset with me, or do you want to join us, and fancy training with us tomorrow?'" Gibbs-White told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"There was no question there. I was smiling from ear-to-ear. I am delighted."

Smaller clubs with limited resources unable to maintain pristine pitches is understandable; what's Real Madrid's excuse? Forget visiting Arsenal, Real's own women's team should be up in arms about being made to play on that surface. Be interesting to know how that pitch passed pre-game inspections.

The pitch was awful - it took me back to 20 years ago at the start of my playing career.

We have got to a level where a club like that should have a much better pitch for the women's team.

Real Madrid used the conditions and adapted to it a lot better - they were a lot better.

One played a game on a pitch that was called the Half Pipe. Both goals at the top and at the edge of either box it dipped and curved to the other. As a goalkeeper I could kick it to the other box. Me and the opposition keeper played a game of catch for a while.

  7. 'It has not been a great week for women's football'published at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March

    Emma Sanders
BBC Sport women’s football news reporter

It [the pitch in Madrid] was choppy, it was muddy and it was wet and Arsenal clearly couldn't play their football on it but obviously the conditions were the same for Real Madrid - they just seemed to adapt better.

Real Madrid midfielder Melanie Leupolz went off injured late on with what could be a knee injury and you'd have to think that the pitch could have played a part in that.

We haven't yet heard from Uefa. We know they have pitch regulations so I think a lot of people are wondering how this pitch passed those regulations.

It comes just days after the women's League Cup final at Pride Park and the pitch wasn't great at all - you could tell before a ball was kicked. There were complaints after that.

It has not been a great week for women's football. There is disparity in women's football, some pitches are elite and then you have reserve pitches and training pitches like we saw in Madrid last night.

Does anyone remember the football pitches at Woodlands Comprehensive School in Coventry. It was literally called the sea sick pitch. The field had furrows from old farming days and if you sprinted up the pitch it would be high, then low and your legs would give way.

  10. The pitch in question at Pride Park...published at 09:35 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March

So why is the Pride Park pitch in the news?

Well, although Erin Cuthbert lifted the trophy after Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the League Cup final last week, the Chelsea midfielder said the pitch at Pride Park was "not fit for a final".

Sonia Bompastor, who won her first silverware as Chelsea boss said, "I'm not sure if it was a men's final game it would be the same."

    What did the fans say?

Ken: I don't watch loads of women's football but I have to say, they deserve to be playing on a much better surface than that. Terrible pitch for a big final.

Dawn: Why is the league cup final being played on such a poor pitch when the men's is at Wembley?

Steve: Yes, it's not a great pitch but Championship players and lower league teams have to deal with those types of conditions all the time. Not every club is blessed with the funds to maintain Premier League-quality pitches.

  14. Conditions hurt Arsenal as Wright says pitch a 'disgrace'published at 09:21 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March

I'm loving all your messages in so far. But why are we even talking about terrible pitches anyway?

Well, ex-Arsenal Legend, said it was "disgrace" that the women's Champions League quarter-final between Arsenal and Real Madrid was played on Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano's pitch.

Playing conditions at the home of Real Madrid men's reserves deteriorated at a rapid rate, making free-flowing football difficult for both sides.

Wright's criticism on social media came after complaints from Chelsea players and pundits about the pitch for the Women's League Cup final at Derby County's Pride Park last Saturday.

Arsenal boss Renee Slegers admitted the wet and muddy conditions against Real Madrid played their part in her side's defeat on Tuesday.

On the pitch, Slegers said: "It's not on me to criticise. It's obviously a club decision and I'm sure that Uefa is trying to create the best conditions for the tournament. Of course, the weather is not always in our control.

"We've seen a couple of games lately where the pitch conditions haven't been great and I think that's the next step for women's football to take."

    Arsenal lost the game 2-0.

This is like the time where we were sharing the captaincy around for a season when I was in the U10s to see who would be best for the job long term.

Well at that level the only real thing a captain does is the coin toss. When it was my week as stand-in we played on one of those slanted pitches. I lost the coin toss and my chances of becoming the full-time skipper went downhill very quickly.

Reminds me of the seriously slanted football pitch in my North London primary school, 35 years ago. I remember that the coin flip at the start pretty much rigged the entire game; only one team stood any serious chance in any given game and somehow, it was never mine... Safe to say, our school hasn’t produced any great footballers (yet), but it sure taught us a lot about life!

There are just 24 training sessions between now and the World Cup starting.

With Gareth Southgate's England, there was never a defined end-point. Even when we were at the final, we knew it was probably his last match as manager but we didn't know for sure.

With Thomas Tuchel, there is this 18-month contract and this time next year he will only have a matter of months left in the job.

There is a totally different feel to it, from that point of view as much as anything else.

We used to play football on what was called the pregnant pitch, if you stood at one set of goal posts you could only see the top half of the opposite posts, due to the hill in the middle of the pitch.

The training session [yesterday] was different. It was later in the day so the routine for the players was completely different - they had a much later start.

And the training itself, normally we'd have been on the Sir Bobby Charlton pitch but there was warm-up taking place on the Fara Williams pitch and it was only the warm-up taking place there before the players then moved back across to the Sir Bobby Charlton pitch.

Thomas Tuchel spoke to the players for no longer than 30-40 seconds and one of the words we've heard used from many players is "intense" and I thought that reflected that.

There are lots of subtle differences taking place.

Thanks Thomas. That kind of reminds of me of three-sided football, where the pitch is a hexagon and the other two goals are at 45 degree angles to yours.
