In my secondary school the only football goals we could use at break time (not the proper pitch the team used) were at a 90 degree angle rather than facing each other. Made for some interesting situations.

  2. 'Tuchel is looking for character and personality'published at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent on the Football Daily podcast

We're now getting an idea of this Thomas Tuchel squad that was quite controversial in a way - Dan Burn was a surprise and Jordan Henderson was recalled.

It seems to me that right from the outset that he is looking for character and personality and that has been a trait of it so far.

I understand why people would take issue with some of the selections but I think there is a clarity of thought there.

Best save I ever made was having the ball slide past me but sticking in the muddy pool of water on the goal line. Shoulda seen the strikers face when he stopped celebrating!

Was drafted in to play in a village game in rural Maluku, Indonesia. A goat invasion just after half time left us with various steaming 'obstacles' on the pitch for the remainder of the game. Not many sliding tackles after that.

  8. 'Tuchel is not just here for a jolly'published at 08:12 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March

Thomas Tuchel, Head Coach of England, reactsImage source, Getty Images

Thomas Tuchel reached out to several England players before they came together for the games at Wembley on 21 and 24 March.

They included Gibbs-White, who was hoping to earn a recall after winning his first two caps under interim boss Lee Carsley last September and November.

"I think as soon as he got the job he has been in contact with the majority of the players. He is a really easy-going sort of guy, nice to speak to.

"I felt it was top from him, really good starting that relationship with us before even meeting us."

Gibbs-White was part of Tuchel's first training session on Monday, in which the former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain manager spelled out want he wants from his players.

"He is really intense and that is the first thing I took from it. I believe when you know someone knows what he wants, you believe in it as well," said Gibbs-White.

"That intensity to show that he is not just here for a jolly, he is here to win, that was really nice to see."

Was on a hat trick once. Slid the ball past the keeper for goal number 3 and wheeled away and began to celebrate. Ball stopped dead in a puddle on a goal line.

  10. What are we talking about today?published at 08:02 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March

It's a slower day than usual so we're spending the morning chatting about the very worst pitches in football.

There's also some news from the England men's camp, with Jordan Pickford calling team-mate Jordan Henderson's return "great for the squad".

In a bit we'll have some time to focus on the England under-21s. They face the media at 11:30 GMT.

  11. Why is Henderson in the camp?published at 07:55 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March

    Love it, Fish.

By the way, The Monday Night Club's Rory Smith has explained why Thomas Tuchel has included Jordan Henderson in his first England squad selection for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

At school used to have a field with a dip in the middle - both goals were level with each other but the centre circle was probably 10-15 foot lower than both goalmouths. Used to call it banana park.

Jordan Henderson joined Ajax in January 2024 after spending less than six months at Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.

He has made 38 appearances this season and Ajax are six points clear at the top of the Eredivisie.

"His desire to want to win and what he has won and achieved is driven by himself," Pickford said.

"We've been knocking on the door for a while now. We've been to two finals, a semi-final and a quarter final," the goalkeeper said.

Henderson has appeared at six international tournaments for England.

"He has got that winning mentality, what he has won at Liverpool as a player and a captain," said Pickford.

"To have those leaders around the place, the more leaders you have in the team I think the more success they will bring.

"They will drive training standards, they will drive standards around the place and make it a better camp for everybody."

Also, Johnny's been back in touch to confirm that yes, if you are a shorter goalkeeper, you won't be able to touch the crossbar on his pitch that has a dip in the goalmouth.

When I was a kid I played in goal for the local under 11s for a bit. One time we played in a summer tournament on a pitch that was somehow both rock hard from the dry weather, but also cut up like no man's land. The sheer number of bobbles on the pitch led to me doing a "Paul Robinson" i.e trying to kick it out, missing and conceding a goal. This incident was a contributing factor to my "release" a short while later. I maintain if that pitch had been playable I'd be in Tuchel's squad right now competing with Pickford.

  16. Henderson England recall a great move - Pickfordpublished at 07:31 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at St George's Park

Jordan Henderson's England recall is a "great move" and the 34-year-old brings a "winning mentality" to the squad, says goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Ajax midfielder Henderson was called up for the first time since November 2023 when new manager Thomas Tuchel named him in his first England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

Henderson won the first of his 81 caps in 2010 under Fabio Capello, and Tuchel has said the former Liverpool skipper "embodies everything we try to build".

Pickford knows Henderson well as they were both at Sunderland in the early stage of their careers, as well as being part of the England sides that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Great text in to start, thanks Johnny.

Quick question, how high was the painted crossbar? I'm not the tallest. If I was the keeper and stood in that hollowed out dip bit would any shot just under the bar beat me, no matter how high I jumped?

Ref worst pitches not an official pitch but growing up on a council estate we all used to play football using a goal painted on the side of a garage. By the time I moved out so much mud had been removed from the middle of the goal mouth was about 8 inches lower then the outside. Also meant during the cricket season could bowl about a metre outside leg and would turn in viciously.

What's the worst surface a professional game has ever been played on?

And, even better, what's the worst pitch you've played on? Have you turned up on a Sunday only to see a puddle so large it has got geese in it? That sort of thing.
