"We couldn’t give him the right perspective in this club, but he has high potential and he needs games to improve and to progress, he gets the opportunity at Panathinaikos and we will follow the process."

And finally, on if they need to sell to bring players in: "I didn’t say I’m looking for transfers coming in, also I don’t say that players are going out.

More from Erik ten Hag on Joshua Zirkzee: "Very pleasing that a player who is a striker scores his first goal in his first game,

"That will give him confidence, we're very pleased that it’s happened. I give the comparison last year with Rasmus Hojlund that when he scored against Brighton and the VAR looked, five minutes later they came to the conclusion the ball crossed the line in the assist and he had to wait thee months for his first Premier League goal.

"It helps absolutely scoring his first goal, it gives him confidence and gives us confidence as a team."

"We have to manage it, the attitude of the players is very important, sometimes they will be disappointed they are not in the starting XI but they have to deal with it, you win as a squad.

"The prizes are decided next May and until then we need all the players in the squad and highly motivated, that is not an expectation, that is a demand on the squad.

"The team is always more important than any individual."

Phil: The lack of real killer instinct at Manchester United worries me. Being able to grind out 1-0 wins or come from behind to win are good traits, but this United team just don't seem capable of putting three, four or five goals past teams regularly. Do that a few times early on this season and other teams might actually start to fear playing against United again.

But PSG are reportedly not prepared to lower their £51m valuation of Ugarte.(Mirror), external

Liverpool v Brentford (Sunday 16:30 BST)

The Arne Slot era got off to a winning start at Ipswich - a good second-half performance and a clean sheet in what might have been a really awkward opening game.

Afterwards, he pointed to a few things that needed attention - like not winning enough duels in the first half for example, and he is clearly a coach that always looks for improvement.

In the context of no summer signings so far, he was still able to name an incredibly strong bench of substitutes. The options are there and he is clearly not afraid to use them. We saw the introduction of Ibrahima Konate at half-time, with Cody Gakpo, Kostas Tsimikas and Conor Bradley coming on later. He still had the likes of Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott up his sleeve if required.

So plenty of positives, not least Ryan Gravenberch's performance in that much talked about number six role. He looked very much at home and it will be interesting to see how often he plays there.

Sunday's opponents Brentford will also have noted that Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota are already off the mark. It is early days of course, but after an excellent pre-season and an opening-day victory, the signs are looking promising for the new head coach.

The teenager, son of ex-Newcastle United midfielder Lee Clark, signed from the Magpies aged 16 and will now join Red Bull Salzburg in Austria's top flight.

"After an incredible three years at Liverpool, I've decided it's time for a new challenge," Clark said.

"I've learned so much during my time at the club and am very thankful for the opportunities and experiences I've had.

"Thank you to all the fans who supported me on this journey."

The very first episode on BBC at the time was Liverpool v Arsenal, I was 4. I'd love to say I remembered it or even saw it but my eldest sister absolutely did and she's talked about it. She took me to Anfield for my 1st game 5 years later.

  16. 'How have we lost again on another deal?'published at 15:58 British Summer Time 22 August

European football expert Archie Rhind-Tutt spoke about Conor Gallagher and Joao Felix's moves on the Euro Leagues podcast: "It is difficult to argue that Atletico haven't really won this deal. They paid a lot of money for [Joao] Felix so they have done well to at least get a fee. Especially as Felix is a player who has been accused of not having the best mentality.

"[Conor] Gallagher fits into the way that they play, and in the process they have got rid of someone who was a problem case for them.

"If you are a Chelsea fan then surely you are looking at this and thinking 'how have we lost again on another deal?' But also, what players are thinking that Chelsea looks like a good place to go right now? I scratch my head and wonder who is advising these players."

Football journalist Julien Laurens spoke about Conor Gallagher and Joao Felix on the Euro Leagues podcast: "This deal happened for purely financial reasons because all of Gallagher's sale goes into Chelsea's pocket and they can spread the cost of Felix.

"But a year ago Felix was a Chelsea player and he was not very good, so why would you go after him again? It was to make sure the Gallagher deal happened."

What a shame we can't watch old episodes of MOTD. Be good for the youngsters to see what 'proper' football was like. Mud patches, hard tackles, wonderful skills in difficult conditions. Punditry has come a long way, too!
