  1. 'I would expect us to still be a bit busy'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 22 August

Southampton v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Southampton

Southampton boss Russell Martin has been speaking to the media before their Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. He was first asked about how busy the club expects to be in final days of transfer window: "I said that last time, we have a full squad at the moment. We played 11 v 11 yesterday morning and today.

"We have had a couple of guys who have been in and out and they are not young guys, they have played hundreds of games, it's only natural we would have to lose a few to bring one or two in.

"On the urgency of it all and how important it is, in terms of incomings and outgoings I would expect us to still be a bit busy in towards the end."

Having once called Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez team-mates, Derry City's newest signing Andre Wisdom has spoken of his pride at returning to full-time football four years after a serious assault.

The former Liverpool defender, who made 14 Premier League appearances for the Reds between 2012 and 2014, was attacked by four masked men who stabbed him and stole his designer watch in June 2020.

A player with Derby County at the time of the attack, he would leave Pride Park a year later and was most recently playing with Warrington Town in the National League North.

The former England Under-21 international is now back in the pro ranks having signed a deal at the League of Ireland side until the end of the season.

"The will was always there, but it felt like it wasn’t the way at times," said the 31-year-old of making a comeback after the stabbing.

"Perseverance, mindset, keeping going. You’ve got to keep training. It’s led me here.

"I’m quite proud of myself for getting back into full-time football. I can now say again I have a job."

My earliest memory of MOTD is December 1995 Boxing Day fixtures being played on my new hand held mini TV that I had asked for that Christmas. I could just about make out Des’s moustache! The theme tune was still as clear as ever.

  9. 'Great chance for Larne to showcase NIFL on European stage'published at 12:03 British Summer Time 22 August

Lincoln Red Imps v Larne (20:00 BST)

    Larne players celebrateImage source, Inpho

Larne have a "great chance" of qualifying for the Uefa Conference League but their play-off against Lincoln Red Imps "won't be easy", says Desi Curry, who has held high-profile roles in both the Northern Ireland and Gibraltar football structures.

After serving as the Irish FA's technical director, Curry spent five years in a similar role with the Gibraltar FA between 2017 and 2022 and had a spell in charge of their national team, which included several Lincoln players.

"For Larne, it's fantastic opportunity and they'll be very well prepared for that," Curry told BBC Sport NI.

"I think they have a great chance but over two legs it's not going to be an easy game.

"Both teams will be giving it their all because the financial rewards are so big but it's a great opportunity for Northern Ireland football to showcase the NIFL league on the European stage."

Lincoln Red Imps famously beat Celtic in 2016 and qualified for the 2021-22 Conference League group stage.

"Going to that stadium and playing in a game like this, 50 or 60% of their squad have international experience and playing against teams like the Netherlands, Norway and France," added Curry.

"So for many of them this will not necessarily be a big occasion. It'll be a run-of-the-mill game."

My fondest MOTD memory is as a 16 year old lad, sitting in my late grandparents conservatory on a Saturday evening in October 2002, seeing a kid the same age as me come off the bench, and then hearing the immortal words "Remember the name, Wayne Rooney!" I can't believe that young upstart is now a manager and I have sons of my own to watch MOTD with.

  11. 'This is just normal but that is the pressures you have as a Chelsea player'published at 11:52 British Summer Time 22 August

    Chelsea v Servette (20:00 BST)

    Kiernan Dewsbury-HallImage source, Getty Images

Midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who played for Enzo Maresca at Leicester last season and followed him to Stamford Bridge, says big-match pressure "is just normal" for a Chelsea player.

Dewsbury-Hall made his competitive Blues debut off the bench against Manchester City on Sunday.

"I don’t think there are many games that we go into where we are not probably favourites to win," he said.

"This is just normal but that is the pressures you have as a Chelsea player. It is something you have to deal with.

"I know that myself and all of the players relish that. It is a good opportunity for us to put on a really good performance and show the fans that we are improving game by game and have a good start to this European journey."

    Chelsea v Servette (20:00 BST)

    Enzo MarescaImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca hopes his team can get off to a winning start in Thursday's Conference League play-off with Servette.

The Blues, who lost to Manchester City in their Premier League opener on Sunday, have to get through two legs against the Swiss side to reach the group stages of European competition.

Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo were among the players left out of Chelsea's squad for the match at Stamford Bridge.

New signing Joao Felix was not signed from Atletico Madrid in time to be involved.

Maresca, who replaced Mauricio Pochettino this summer, said: "We are for sure going to try to win, hopefully we can win, and start tomorrow winning a game in the official competition.

"I am just focused on the game, not thinking what happens if we don’t win and these kinds of things."

  14. Kilmarnock dreaming of 'unimaginable' prize moneypublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 22 August

    Copenhagen v Kilmarnock (18:00 BST)

    Derek McInnesImage source, Getty Images

Kilmarnock go into their Conference League play-off with Copenhagen dreaming of "unimaginable" prize money and with the same mindset they would have against the Old Firm, according to manager Derek McInnes.

The Ayrshire side are underdogs in Denmark but take heart from two wins and a draw against Scottish Premiership champions Celtic last season, along with one victory over Rangers.

"We've beaten better teams in the past," McInnes told BBC Scotland. "We’ve beaten Celtic, we’ve beaten Rangers and I think that a club like Copenhagen is in that type of bracket, so that’s the way we are treating this tie.

"It’s trying to keep it tight, we had some tight games against both those teams last season, I think it’s fair and sensible to treat it that way over two legs, to take it back to Rugby Park and give ourselves a fighting chance."

The hosts narrowly progressed past Banik Ostrava in the last round, winning 2-1 on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw

Copenhagen are unbeaten after nine matches across all competitions this term, winning six of those.

  15. Hearts aim to bounce back and secure Europepublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 22 August

Viktoria Plzen v Hearts (18:00 BST)

    Steven NaismithImage source, Getty Images

Hearts manager Steven Naismith says there have been "strong conversations" after their League Cup exit and urged his side to "make that right" against Viktoria Plzen in their quest to reach the Europa League.

The Tynecastle side were dumped out in the last 16 by second-tier Falkirk on Saturday, having been well beaten 3-1 by Dundee in the league the previous week.

Now Naismith's side are in the Czech Republic for the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie against Plzen on Thursday, with the return at Tynecastle next week.

"Our last couple of performances in one area or another have not been at the required level and that's ultimately cost us," the Hearts boss told BBC Scotland.

"We're bitterly disappointed to go out the cup so we want to make that right."

Hearts are guaranteed a place in the Conference League should they lose this tie, which means a busy schedule lies ahead.

Every Saturday, my mum and dad would make beef roast. Supper was left over beef sandwiches made with locally baked cob bread. We lovingly knew them as Match of the Day sarnies, as we’d sit and watch the games while eating. Fond memories.
