I used to get sent up to my bedroom while Dallas was on and then mum and dad would call up for me to come down. It was extra special if Everton were *the* match of the day and I was in the crowd at Anfield when Graeme Sharp thumped it in from thirty yards in 84/85. Happy birthday MOTD!!

  2. Kulenovic scores twice as Dinamo Zagreb beat Qarabagpublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 22 August

    Dinamo Zagreb 3-0 Qarabag

Qarabag will look back on this game and rue all the chances they missed. The Azerbaijani team had plenty of chances, especially in the second period, where they dominated most of the half.

However, if you don't put away your chances, you don't win games. A point proven by Dinamo Zagreb's Sandro Kulenovic, who came off the bench to score twice in clinical fashion.

Watch highlights as Dinamo Zagreb beat Qarabag 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie.

  3. Brighton news conferencepublished at 09:05 British Summer Time 22 August

  4. Salzburg surge ahead of Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League play-offpublished at 09:02 British Summer Time 22 August

    Dynamo Kyiv 0-2 Salzburg

Plenty of goal action... but not a lot of goals. On another day, this match could have been high-scoring for both sides. However, Salzburg here clinical early on and take a 2-0 advantage into the second leg.

Check out the highlights as Salzburg beat Dynamo Kyiv.

Timmy Ryan: ‘Match Of The Day’ turns 60! The show was first broadcast August 22nd in 1964. The late Jimmy Hill was the best presenter in my opinion. Essential part of growing up!

  6. David shines for Lille in play-off win over Slavia Praguepublished at 08:49 British Summer Time 22 August

Lille 2-0 Slavia Prague - Champions League play-off first leg

Canadian striker Jonathan David was the standout player during Tuesday's Champions League play-off. Lille's regular talisman was involved in both of his sides goals to give the Ligue 1 team a 2-0 advantage after the first leg.

My favourite MOTD memory is Alan Mullery's goal of the season for Fulham v Leicester in 1974, was in line with the shot as it bent into the net in the afternoon and then made sure I was in to watch again on MOTD that night.

Young Boys 3-2 Galatasaray - Champions League play-offs first leg

Michy Batshuayi must be wondering what more a player needs to do. The Belgium international came off the bench to score two goals in just over five minutes to give his Galatasaray side a fighting chance against Young Boys.

However, the headlines belong to VAR after a controversial last-minute penalty, which resulted in a sending-off, was awarded to the Swiss side, who won the game 3-2.

Chelsea are the laughing stock of the Premier League. They shouldn't have sacked Pochettino and the way they've treated the long-serving players like Gallagher and youngsters like Chalobah is appalling. Sterling too. They won't be able to keep their 40+ players happy and I'll have no sympathy when they fail. Surely any promising young player in their right mind will be reluctant to join them too going forwards.

Nottingham Forest remain in talks with Arsenal over a £30m deal for striker Eddie Nketiah.

A deal has not been agreed but the 25-year-old is getting closer to ending his time at Emirates Stadium.

Forest have several striker targets, including Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez, but have progressed with a move for Nketiah.

Nketiah has spent his entire career at the Emirates apart from a half-season loan at Leeds in 2019-20.

He has scored 38 goals in 168 Arsenal appearances but made just 38 Premier League starts, having made his top-flight debut in 2018.

Nottingham Forest have signed Aston Villa left-back Alex Moreno on loan for the rest of the season, with an option for a permanent deal.

Moreno joined Villa from La Liga side Real Betis in January 2023 in a £13.2m deal and was Unai Emery's first signing, having previously been linked with Forest.

He played in 21 Premier League games last season as Villa finished fourth to qualify for the Champions League.

  20. Sterling and Chilwell will struggle for Chelsea minutes - Marescapublished at 07:12 British Summer Time 22 August

Enzo Maresca said he has been "honest" rather than brutal with Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell as both continue to train away from Chelsea's first-team squad.

The Chelsea manager believes he has been clear with the "more than 15 players" - including forward Sterling and left-back Chilwell - who are being asked to train apart from his main group.

Maresca said Chelsea look like "a mess... from outside" as they attempt to trim a bloated squad, but he insisted that was far from being the reality.

He also denied there is any further need for "clarity" about Sterling's status, as the 82-cap England international's representatives have claimed.

Maresca stated he spoke to Sterling before leaving him out of the squad for Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

He does not expect to have further conversations with Sterling prior to the play-off match against Servette in the Conference League on Thursday.

The player's representatives said Sterling had expected to be involved against City, which led Maresca to be asked in a news conference on Wednesday whether his handling of the situation had been "brutal".

Maresca said: "Brutal? I don't think so. I try to be honest. I can repeat again if it's not clear: I spoke with Raheem before the City game. I said he is going to struggle to get minutes with us and this is the reason why he is out of the squad.

"With Chilly, I said he is a lovely guy, but he is going to struggle because of his position. He is going to struggle. If you define this as brutal, it's up to you to decide. For me, it's not brutal, it's just honest."
