It tells you a lot about Manchester United and where they are at the moment.

The Barnsley directors are determined to enjoy their night at Old Trafford, with their executives filming the occasion as the teams came out of the tunnel.

There was plenty of volume behind United's pre-match anthem 'Take Me Home'. Barnsley have their own version of the song, which they belted out, triggering a louder rendition from the home supporters than would normally be the case.

The atmosphere is rather flat for this third round tie and really needs a spark to get going.

Both sides need to ignite their campaigns, having lost all four of their league games so far.

The only highlight so far is Southampton's shirt and socks.

Palace are dominating the early stages at Loftus Road and Eberechi Eze has a look at goal but should do better than fire wastefully over the top from the edge of the penalty area.

  19. Barnsley will be up for this - Ten Hagpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 17 September

Man Utd v Barnsley (20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at Old Trafford

Erik ten Hag has issued a warning to his Manchester United players ahead of tonight's EFL Cup tie with League One Barnsley.

It is anticipated Ten Hag will make a lot of changes for the visit of the South Yorkshire outfit, who ironically were beaten by United's Under-21 side in the EFL Trophy last month.

"Cup games can be a great way to build momentum in a season, so hopefully our forthcoming fixtures in the Carabao Cup and Europa League can have that positive effect," said Ten Hag.

"That will only happen if we approach each game with the right attitude because every team is always motivated to do their best against Manchester United."
