  4. Barnsley's famous day at Old Traffordpublished at 19:37 British Summer Time 17 September

Man Utd v Barnsley (20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at Old Trafford

Obviously no chance of a draw tonight as the game goes straight to penalties but this is Barnsley's first Old Trafford visit since probably their most favourite one (at least for anyone under 100 given they won here in 1923-24).

Against a United side containing Ryan Giggs, Teddy Sheringham and Peter Schmeichel, Barnsley claimed a famous FA Cup fifth round draw, setting up a replay at Oakwell.

Barnsley won a thriller 3-2 in 1998, with John Hendrie scoring the opener and Scott Jones netting twice (he only scored seven in total for the club).

The Cottagers reached the semi-finals of the competition last season, losing to eventual champions Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United will be taking their Carabao Cup tie against Barnsley "very seriously", with the Dutch manager setting his sights on "winning trophies" this season.

In his pre-match news conference, Ten Hag disagreed with former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's comments that trophies are an 'ego thing' and the league is 'most important'.

He added: "I think all the leagues are important. In top football, at the end of the day, it is about winning trophies and hitting targets.

"You set some targets in the season but also longer term ones which you want to grow into, therefore you have a strategy and follow the strategy. You develop and progress the team.

"When you win one of the five leagues then you hit some targets and you have done your job well."

Ten Hag added that he believes playing more games this season, and progressing through cup competitions, will be "very important" for his squad.

"We take it very seriously," he added. "We have to get into the season and to do that you have to work on routines and patterns - it is very important. Many players didn't play together in pre-season, so we have to build those partnerships and we have to build those patterns and routines.

"That is the only way it is possible - is in games - because training time is also very limited when we have to cover so many games, every third day. Training is almost a recovery."

  10. 'An all or nothing game'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 17 September

QPR v Crystal Palace (19:45 BST)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner insists his side are targeting silverware this season as their Carabao Cup campaign resumes.

Palace’s only victory across all competitions so far this season has come in the League Cup, where they beat Norwich to book the short cross-capital journey to Loftus Road.

Glasner said: “I think it’s our duty to take the Carabao Cup very seriously. We want to go in the next round, we will play the Carabao Cup to win it.

“I don’t know if it happens, but it is an all or nothing game. We like those games.

“We could beat Norwich also when it was noisy, and we can beat QPR now, but if we don’t perform at our top level we can also lose.

“They are a Championship team playing at home and we have to be ready.”

  11. 'The league is vital'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 17 September

    Everton v Southampton (19:45 BST)

    Everton

Everton boss Sean Dyche has admitted the domestic cups are "not as important as the league".

The Toffees sit bottom of the Premier League after four losses from their opening four games.

Dyche said: "No disrespect to the cups, they are important, but they are not as important as the league, the league is vital.

"We do need bodies fit so we are going to have to use some bodies that we might not have played.

"We are going to have to use certain players because they need the minutes and need to be there to challenge for us."

  12. 'We want to go on a cup run' - Frankpublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 17 September

Brentford v Leyton Orient (19:45 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank says he wants his side to go on a good cup run.

The Bees' furthest run in the Carabao Cup came in 2020–21 when they reached the semi-finals.

"It is a competition we take very seriously, we have said that for quite a few years," Frank said.

"We want to go on a cup run, to do our best to see how far we can go. We have big respect for Leyton Orient, we know it will be very difficult.

"We know we can lose - just like we did to Gillingham [on penalties in November 2022] - but that is part of football."
