  1. Brest miss chance to move into top eight as Sporting losepublished at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

FT: Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 Brest, RB Leipzig 2-1 Sporting

It's all over in the two 17:45 kick-offs and it's Shakhtar Donetsk and RB Leipzig who come away with three points.

Brest would have knocked Aston Villa out of the top eight with a point but they drop down to 11th while Sporting have to wait until the final game to cement their spot in the play-offs.

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think not having Doku is a big blow because I think every player who is playing well is in the team. To come off a good performance against Ipswich but not being able to play today, it's a shame.

Erling Haaland: I'm confident the club know what they're doing

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland says the charges facing the club had no bearing on him signing a new long-term contract.

Haaland has signed a nine-and-a-half-year deal that would keep him at Etihad Stadium until 2034 - and makes him one of the highest-paid sportspeople in the world.

City are awaiting the outcome of the disciplinary hearing into their alleged 115 breaches of Premier League financial rules, which could result in a points deduction and even relegation.

  4. Guardiola going strongpublished at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

BBC Sport chief football writer in Paris

Pep Guardiola just makes those two changes from the side that won 6-0 at Ipswich Town, with Savinho and Bernardo Silva in for Ilkay Gundogan and the injured Jeremy Doku.

John Stones' return to fitness was welcomed by manager Pep Guardiola when he spoke to the media here in Paris last night, but he is only fit enough to be on the bench.

Erling Haaland was in exuberant form when he also addressed the media and he will lead the quest for the goals Guardiola hopes will help secure safe passage into the Champions League play-offs under the new format.

It is not to say they are definitely back but this is a good test for Man City. When you are going to play PSG, who need this win more than Man City, it is going to be a good test for them.

  6. Walker closes in on AC MIlan movepublished at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

PSG v Man City (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Sources involved in the deal are adamant Kyle Walker's impending move to AC Milan is not done. However, it is getting close.

Walker was given time to explore his options by manager Pep Guardiola.

That has zeroed in on AC Milan, who are moving for Walker in preference to Marcus Rashford given they could only sign one non-EU player.

It is not entirely clear when the deal will be confirmed but once tonight's matches are out of the way, it should not be long.

The feeling is it will be an initial loan to the end of the season, with an agreed fee that would allow AC Milan to buy the 34-year-old England international outright in the summer.

The goalkeepers from both teams are out warming up in the pouring rain here in Paris and it is fair to say the receptions were contrasting.

PSG supporters sound in the mood to make this even more of a hostile environment for Manchester City in this crucial Champions League confrontation.

  9. 'Arsenal aren't resilient enough'published at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Arsenal v Dinamo Zagreb (20:00 GMT)

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on the Football Daily podcast

We talk about Arsenal not having a difference-maker up top - that hasn't changed. Now they are dealing without Saliba there so they have no leader in the back line.

They were 2-0 up [against Aston Villa] and couldn't get the job done. Not resilient enough.

  10. Gyokeres scores before RB Leipzig retake the leadpublished at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

RB Leipzig 2-1 Sporting (at 80 mins)

Viktor Gyokeres scored for the 34th time this season to level for Sporting away at RB Leipzig but they only remained level for three minutes as Yussuf Poulsen quickly put the German side back into the lead.

Sporting would remain on 10 points as things stand and be in danger of elimination in the final league phase game next week.

They started the day 19th and remember Ruben Amorim guided them to a 4-1 victory over Manchester City before leaving Portugal for Manchester United.

RB Leipzig can't make the next phase and if Sporting can't get a win, it would mean they would need to get a positive result at home against already-eliminated Bologna next Wednesday.

Arsenal v Dinamo Zagreb (20:00 GMT)

    Nedum Onuoha

Things were looking up for Arsenal after the North London derby and then they threw away that two-goal lead against Aston Villa. I wouldn't be expecting them to drop points at home but I still think they are a good side.

  12. 'Not clicking for Arsenal at the moment'published at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Arsenal v Dinamo Zagreb (20:00 GMT)

    Glenn Murray
Former Brighton striker on the Football Daily podcast

Arsenal are a team that we began to believe were masters of game management but are not quite like that any more. They lose their way and start putting balls into the box and don't have that physical number nine to win those balls.

It doesn't seem to be quite clicking for Arsenal at the moment.

  15. Emery hints at players lacking right mentality after Monaco losspublished at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

    Monaco 1-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery says his side may have squandered their chances of finishing in the top eight of the Champions League following their loss at Monaco.

Wilfried Singo headed home the game's only goal on Tuesday night as a below-par Villa were unable to convert their opportunities.

Finishing eighth or above in the league phase of the competition ensures direct qualification for the knockout stage and a win for Villa in Monaco would have meant they had one foot in the next stage.

However, the loss means they will likely need to beat Celtic at Villa Park next week to avoid having to go into a two-legged knockout phase play-off.

"When we are playing games like this, it's important to get three points because I think we lost the opportunity to get in the top eight," Emery said. "Today was the key."

Watch below to see Emery speaking to the media following their loss at Monaco in the Champions League.

Aston Villa missed the chance to all but secure their place in the Champions League knockouts as they were beaten by Monaco at Stade Louis II.

Wilfried Singo got the game's only goal in the eighth minute, heading home from close range after Emiliano Martinez had initially done well to keep out Thilo Kehrer's effort.

Villa were not at their best, but did have chances to equalise, with Monaco goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki twice denying the visitors before half-time.

First, Leon Bailey forced him into a decent stop after good work by Emiliano Buendia, who also teed up Ollie Watkins for an effort straight at Majecki.

Monaco also had a goal ruled out early in the second half when Maghnes Akliouche was flagged offside, but the hosts continued to look the most likely to score again, twice getting in behind the Villa defence only for last-ditch blocks to prevent them scoring.

The defeat means Unai Emery's side will likely need to beat Celtic at Villa Park next Wednesday to seal a top-eight place in the league phase of the competition.

Meanwhile, the win boosted Monaco's own automatic qualification hopes as they moved alongside Villa on 13 points.

  17. Team news - Kiwior starts for Arsenal at centre backpublished at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January

Arsenal v Dinamo Zagreb (20:00 BST)

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at the Emirates Stadium

Mikel Arteta has gone for Jakub Kiwior on the right side of central defence to deal with the absence of William Saliba. There's no Myles Lewis-Skelly at left back and Oleksandr Zinchenko starts.

Dinamo Zagreb starts Martin Baturina in attack. He came up in yesterday's press conference and Arteta was complimentary about the forward's ability. He'll be a player to watch.

Arsenal XI: Raya, Timber, Kiwior, Gabriel, Zinchenko, Jorginho, Rice, Odegaard, Sterling, Martinelli, Havertz

Subs: Neto, Setford, Tierney, Partey, Trossard, Merino, Calafiori, Butler-Oyedeji, Kabia, Kacurri, Nwaneri

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Lille

Mohamed Salah scored his 50th European goal for Liverpool as the Reds booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with victory over 10-man Lille at Anfield.

Salah's goal came when he latched onto a brilliant Curtis Jones through ball and slotted over the advancing Lucas Chevalier in the 34th minute.

Lille, who were unbeaten in 21 games in all competitions, had restricted Liverpool until then but Arne Slot's side controlled the game after the goal. Salah sent another one-on-one wide, before curling just past the far post in the second half.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men just before the half mark when Aissa Mandi was given a second yellow card for tripping Luis Diaz. His first was complaining about a possible foul on Jonathan David in the build-up to the goal.

They surprisingly equalised three minutes later when David passed home after Hakon Haraldsson's effort was blocked.

Liverpool soon restored their advantage though when a corner was headed clear to Harvey Elliott and his deflected strike found the bottom corner.

There has been some transfer speculation around Elliott in the January window but speaking to Amazon Prime after the game he said: "I am not leaving. This is my team and my club.

"I'm a massive fan and we're in a great position so far this season.

"I've had conversations with the gaffer but at the same time I need to understand the situation. For me to go in and say I should be starting it would be silly of myself really."
