  1. Goodbye!published at 18:30 British Summer Time 18 May

Another season ends with Chelsea lifting the Women's Super League trophy.

We thought we may get drama but in the end Chelsea made it five in a row with a thumping victory over Manchester United.

For Manchester City, it wasn't to be as their victory over Aston Villa wasn't enough to seal the title.

It's all about Chelsea and Emma Hayes, though, as she secures the fairytale ending to cap off a 12-year trophy-laden career.

It will be strange not seeing her in the dugout next season but Chelsea must look to move on and go again.

Thank you for joining us throughout this magnificent WSL season, we'll see you next season for more thrills, spills, twists and turns...Goodbye!

Chelsea and Manchester City finished the league with the exact same record of 17 wins, three losses and one draw.

But Emma Hayes' side scored 10 more goals than their rivals with 71, leaving them with a goal difference of 53, six more than City.

Hayes says it has been her toughest season to date. City have kept pace with them every step of the way. Until today.

    Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Erin Cuthbert speaking to BBC Sport: "Honestly it's not over until it's over and we had a great start to the game and that's exactly what we wanted. We knew we couldn't control results elsewhere, we could only take care of our business and we've more than done that.

"Never ever did I think we'd go and win six [nil]. We never ever make it easy for us. We could have scored many goals on Wednesday to be honest. It never went in the net.

“People started writing us off again. I don't know how many times people have written us off this season and to be honest we have probably thought we've been down and out ourselves at times as well but we always find a way. I don't know what it is, I can't put my finger on it and in really crucial moments we always come together. Little moments like winning tackles, duels, we were just on it today."

On the impact of Emma Hayes: "I think to be honest her impact will only really be felt years down the line when we look back. I’m really excited of course about a change but Emma will be sorely missed. She is the one who believed in me from the beginning of my career. Who wants to take a young Scottish girl nobody knows about? Emma does - that's the beauty of her. She gives everyone a chance and she'll never give up on you. She has really nurtured my career. I've got a lot to be grateful for so I wish her all very best but if the USA play Scotland, definitely not."

On the secret to winning trophies under Hayes: "Just a ruthless mentality. In the moments that really matter we find a way. We've never really backed down from challenge. The fans have been with us from the start, they've been incredible this year. There have been a few rough moments, this titles has taken about ten years off my life if I’m being deadly honest. The hardest one yet, the sweetest one yet so yeah I'm going to enjoy tonight."

On how much Hayes will celebrate: "I can't even imagine, I know Emma Hayes on a night out so I'll be making sure. Shot for me shot for her every time I get them. We are all going to celebrate, the beauty is we can all be together and celebrate as a group."

  5. 'Gutted to be retiring but looking forward to what's next'published at 18:20 British Summer Time 18 May

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City captain Steph Houghton speaking to Sky Sports: "Yeah I think it did sink in a bit at the end. It has been a few weeks now where I have not been able to get on the pitch, so to get on today was really special. Our fans came to support us in their thousands today which was unbelievable, the Villa fans as well, so a little bit of everything in terms of emotions.

"Disappointed that we haven't won the league but I am leaving behind a great group of people so absolutely gutted for that too. I know it is the right thing to do though and I am excited to see what happens next season.

On the late free kick: "I probably rushed it a little bit to be honest. You know it has been a pleasure to represent the football club, to represent these girls, play for England, play for some great clubs like Arsenal, Leeds, Sunderland... A career I would never have even dreamed of. Gutted to be retiring but looking forward to what's next.

On missing out on a fairytale farewell: "Yes gutted. First and foremost congratulations to Chelsea and Emma Hayes. Season after season they produce the performances and they produce the results. We tried to push them as far as we could but ultimately came up short.

"I will probably take some time to relax and reflect. Football is so fast paced that you are always looking forward but I can be proud of how I have been, especially these last couple of seasons but also for the career I've had."

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to BBC Sport: "I don't think I have the energy for it [letting the emotions out] to be honest. It's been an emotional week, probably a rollercoaster seven months. Staying on top of your own emotion is really tricky. I'm just relieved it's over.

On if the early goals sealed the title: "Yes I think so. We've had some big injuries this year and having all the leaders on the pitch was absolutely essential. Big occasion. You need the experience and everybody delivered today.

Exhausted?: "I don't think I have the words really. I am full with a tonne of different emotions. Knowing it is the end and I won't be with this team or these fans again... But they're always in my heart.

Ready to say goodbye?: "Yes definitely. I am ready, I have given everything I've got. Ready for my next adventure.

On how much rest before the USWNT job: "One day, Monday. Then I fly to New York for press conferences, then Denver to meet with the team after the weekend.

On celebration plans: " Absolutely! But cutting loose for a middle aged, 48 year old woman in menopause is called a cup of tea and a quiet booth in the corner. The rest of them can have all the energy. Alcohol terrifies me. I don't like it, it doesn't like me. I fear for the evening I really really do. But we love a boogie and a party, so we're going to have a big one tonight."

  8. 'For me to sum it up I think would take another ten years'published at 18:06 British Summer Time 18 May

    Chelsea

More from Chelsea forward Fran Kirby speaking to BBC Sport:

On the Chelsea fans chanting her song: "It is incredible, something I never dreamed could happen. They have been incredible to me throughout my Chelsea journey, especially in the last few weeks when they knew I was leaving. I can't thank them enough for everything. The love they gave me today I will never forget.

On how she sums up her time at the club: "I would say a whirlwind. I have had some incredible moments where everything has been going so well for me, and then some incredibly hard moments and tough times. For me to sum it up I think would take another ten years, to be able to sit and reflect with all the emotion taken out of it. So come back to me in ten years and I'll be able to tell you.

On what's next - WSL?: "I've been in this league a long time and I have said previously that I still feel like I've got a lot to give. I still feel like if I'm part of a team, playing consistently, getting a rhythm, having my fitness up.. I've not had much of a chance to do that this season.

"I want to win. That's my biggest thing. Wherever I go, Wherever I play, I want to give my all and win. That was the case during my time here at Chelsea and it will be the case wherever I go next.

  9. 'I got a little bit emotional with the goal'published at 18:01 British Summer Time 18 May

    FT: Man Utd 0-6 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea forward Fran Kirby speaking to BBC Sport: "It was great. We knew coming here we had to put in a performance. The girls blew it away in the first half, they were incredible and everything they did turned into goals. It is nice to come into a game like that where you can relax and just express yourself, and just be a part of it.

On her last game and the emotions: "To be honest I think I got all my emotion out early on. Everything was being spoken about and with all the farewells you get all the emotion out then. I just wanted to enjoy today. I wanted to be present and part of it. I got a little bit emotional with the goal but there was about ten minutes left to go so I had to try and get over it."

Chelsea defender Jess Carter, speaking to Sky Sports: "For me, this is the best trophy that we've won because the season has been so up and down.

"A few of us were saying this might be our worst season in terms of performances.

"But to come out on top, stay together and fight and fight and fight then win it at this incredible stadium, it's been a special day.

"We had to go out and give everything, there was nothing left to lose. We didn't want to have any regrets."

Emma Hayes has been the one who has set the tone for the off-field issues in the women's game.

She has spoken about motherhood, she has discussed difficulties she has personally faced, spoken about managing menstrual cycles related to training and loading.

She is a progressive and deep thinker. That is one of the key things she leaves behind in her legacy.

More from Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to Sky Sports: "To finish here at Old Trafford, I hope to get a glass of wine with Sir Alex in a minute. Everyone told us we couldn't. Everyone said girls can't play, nor can they fill stadiums, nor can they get paid, nor can they create history.

"Not only are we not going away but we are going to fill them every week. Women's football now is a serious business and that for me is what it's about."

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to Sky Sports: "What a wonderful performance from the team today. I picked a team of leaders from the beginning and I felt it was absolutely essentially we had the emotional maturity and regulation for a stadium as fitting as this. We've lost a lot of players today so to have some of them back today, it was just an amazing performance.

On if it is her toughest title: "I can't say it's my most enjoyable but it's definitely been the toughest without doubt and for that reason probably the sweetest. I'm just so relieved it's over."

Reflecting on her time at Chelsea: "Great memories, listening to the fans, the connection with the players, I just haven't got any more to give I know that.

"The hardest thing to do is five in a row because people take their eye off the ball. My legacy is winning while building a team for the future."

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester City

    Aston Villa

More from Aston Villa boss Carla Ward, speaking to BBC Sport: It's been a weird emotional day. I'm really proud of the team today and the way we conducted ourselves. You're on the touchline, you're trying to urge the team up the pitch and you think 'I'll not be doing this for a while'. It will be a short break. I think once I have a breather I'll come back stronger.

On her legacy: When you've got such good relationships with the fans, the players, the board, that becomes tough. It's the right time for me, I need a break. I have no doubt I'll be back, be stronger than ever and achieving.

On being able to spend more time with her daughter: "She's asking a lot of questions on when she'll see me, when we'll do bits and pieces. She's the most important thing in my life and it's time to dedicate some time to her."

On how she'll spend the time: "When I get back I'll recharge, have a look round the world at the women's game's trends and educate myself in different areas."

On her final words for the fans: "I'll be back."
