    Leicester 2-2 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton's form and results have been inconsistent of late but they are still seventh in the Premier League table.

In November, they lost to Liverpool, beat Manchester City and Bournemouth and drew against bottom side Southampton.

So far in December, they have lost to Fulham and drawn against Leicester.

  4. 'We have to be really careful talking about the performance'published at 13:05 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Leicester 2-2 Brighton

Fabian Hurzeler spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Brighton's draw against Leicester: "How can you explain that? It's just football sometimes. We have to learn from it because we have experienced it this season. We need to be more mature and finish off the games. You can't explain it sometimes. We can also see it as an opportunity to show character.

"We had enough chances to lead more. We have to be really careful talking about the performance. We have to trust the process and we will reflect this and look at the positives. A big part is game management. We have to improve.

"No excuse. It's our fault and we have to take responsibility. I'm not a guy who will find excuses."

Aged 37 years and 332 days, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is the second-oldest player in Premier League history to both score and assist a goal in a single match, after Ryan Giggs vs Fulham in December 2011 (38y 22d), according to Opta.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man.

When Leicester looked down and out, Jamie Vardy came to the rescue as Ruud Van Nistelrooy continued his unbeaten start to life at the King Power Stadium.

Brighton may well be wondering how they did not come away with the three points but Leicester will not care as Vardy netted his sixth of the season and teed up Bobby De Cordova-Reid for the injury-time equaliser.

Leicester celebrated the point as if it was three and rightly so as they lifted themselves five points adrift of Ipswich Town in 18th place.

After losing three on the spin, Van Nistelrooy has not only steadied the ship but he has put four points out of a possible six on the board.

Not only are the Foxes inching further away from the relegation zone but they are building much needed confidence ahead of a trip to Newcastle and a potential relegation six-pointer against 19th placed Wolves.

After the final whistle, the King Power was joyful and hopeful despite the Van Nistelrooy reign only being underway for a week.

Ruud van Nistelrooy told BBC Match of the Day that he was pleased with his players' character: "I think I liked the second half a lot. The way we played, we deserved the point. I think.

"I'm pleased with the character and spirit and approach of the game. If we are winning, we are losing it's football. The ball in top corner like the first one. Yeah. It can happen. But it's about the performance. That mentality. That is what the team showed, that character, and It was rewarded today."

  8. Leicester's form under RVNpublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Leicester 2-2 Brighton

Leicester are unbeaten in their first two games under Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The former Manchester United striker was appointed manager on 29 November but did not actually take the reins until after their 4-1 defeat at Brentford 4-1, when interim boss Ben Dawson was in charge.

The Foxes then beat West Ham 3-1 before Sunday's 2-2 draw at home to Brighton.

Leicester produced a stunning comeback to maintain new boss Ruud van Nistelrooy's unbeaten start in an enthralling draw with Brighton.

After falling two goals behind in the second half, captain Jamie Vardy halved the deficit in the 86th minute with a trademark finish for his sixth goal of the season.

The drama did not end there as substitute Bobby De Cordova-Reid netted his first of the campaign in added time after a brilliant assist from Vardy to stun to Brighton, who had looked in command following goals from Tariq Lamptey and Yankuba Minteh.

Fabian Hurzeler's visitors were set to climb to fifth place when Lamptey curled a beauty into the top corner past Mads Hermansen in the 37th minute.

I am a Villa fan and no lover of London teams but I have to say that the Spurs vs Chelsea game yesterday was brilliant to watch. Chelsea are genuine title contenders and Spurs just need to become more consistent to challenge for Europe. At their best they can beat anyone but too many dropped points against the poorer teams. Stick with Ange who is an excellent manager and will get you there but possibly not this season.

  12. 'It is an extremely disappointed dressing room'published at 12:34 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Ipswich Town 1-2 Bournemouth

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Sunday's defeat against Bournemouth: "It is an extremely disappointed dressing room. I thought it was a good performance with some outstanding performances.

"Conor Chaplin with his goal, he's on a great journey. We know we could have won the game. I think the second goal being ruled out was harsh.

"Conceding late changes the momentum and then they go and grab a second."

On Cameron Burgess' goal being disallowed: "I think the challenge from Liam [Delap] happens every week. It looks so similar to so many incidents I've seen this weekend but we get pulled up on it."

  13. 'We definitely didn't deserve to lose'published at 12:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Ipswich Town 1-2 Bournemouth

Andoni Iraola spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Bournemouth's victory against Ipswich: "We definitely didn't deserve to lose, we had great chances but just failed to take them, especially in the first half. Even in the second half we had momentum from the beginning. You start to think it's not your day but luckily we took them in the end."

On the impact from the bench: "The subs gave us the end product that we were missing. We were arriving in the right places but just not finishing.

"They finished well, we were almost in desperation mode at that point. We didn't have much structure and it was just about trying to get something."

  14. Bournemouth take all three pointspublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

Bournemouth scored two late goals to come from behind and record a dramatic victory against Ipswich at Portman Road.

Ipswich were on track for their first home Premier League win since 2002 when the clocked ticked into the 87th minute, thanks to Conor Chaplin's first-half strike. But Bournemouth, who came on strong in the second half, refused to give up and broke the hearts of the home side thanks to the efforts of two players who came off the bench.

Enes Unal scored the Cherries' equaliser, scrambling the ball over the line from close range.

His fellow substitute Dango Ouattara then grabbed the winner in the fifth minute of additional time as Ipswich failed to clear their lines.

  17. 'Teams are starting to slightly work Arsenal out now'published at 12:04 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Fulham 1-1 Arsenal

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on the Premier League Review

The reality of it is, if Alexander Isak is in that [Arsenal] team, it gives Arsenal a completely different dynamic. Teams are starting to slightly work them out now by keeping [Martin] Odegaard and [Bukayo] Saka locked in and quiet down one side and they struggle to have any different ideas. When they don't have that natural striker that gives you another option of balls into the box to open a game, that's a problem right now. I think that's a big problem but they can still rely on their synchronised swimming of set-pieces.

  18. 'It looked like a clear red to me and I was astonished no action was taken'published at 11:59 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at the Frankfurt Arena

Michael, Barnet: Hi Phil, In your opinion, should Moises Caceido have been sent off for his tackle in the first half? Personally, I can't see any mitigation for that tackle not being a clear red, and I find the decision to let it go utterly baffling.

Hello, Michael. Totally agree with you. It looked like a clear red to me and I was astonished no action was taken.

What is “excessive force” anyway? Caicedo was late, over the top and clearly could have hurt Pape Sarr. Shame as Caicedo is a wonderful player.

For balance, however, I also thought Dejan Kulusevski was lucky to escape an elbow on Romeo Lavia. What was his elbow doing up near Lavia’s head in that challenge?

  19. Did you know?published at 11:53 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Fulham 1-1 Arsenal

Since the start of the 2022-23 season, the only defender to have scored more goals from set pieces than William Saliba (six) in the Premier League is Arsenal teammate Gabriel Magalhaes (10).

  20. Arsenal's expected goals from open playpublished at 11:47 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Fulham 1-1 Arsenal

A look at the Gunners' xG from open play - which excludes chances created from free-kicks and corners - tells a slightly different story.

At Fulham, the Gunners accumulated an xG of just 0.3 from open play - which is their second lowest this season behind the 0.18 they managed during the 2-2 draw against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium in September.

Over the course of the season, Arsenal's open play xG is 15.9 from their 15 Premier League matches - which would rank them 10th in the league.

In those 15 matches, the Gunners have recorded an open play xG of 1.0 or below 10 times.

Of the 27 goals (excluding penalties) they have scored during the Premier League this season, nine have come from set-pieces, which is 33.33% of their overall tally.

Only Nottingham Forest (35.3%), Crystal Palace (38.5%) and Everton (57.1%) have scored a higher percentage of their non-penalty goals from set-pieces in the Premier League this term.

Asked in his news conference if his side are creating enough from open play, Arteta replied: "It's never enough if you don't score three, four or five."
