Cole Palmer is overrated. He is anonymous in the "big" games (Liverpool,Manchester Utd, Manchester City and Arsenal) Salah is the best player in the PL.

Mick, Hampshire: Hi Phil, would you say that Cole Palmer is the best player in the Premier League this season?

Hi, Mick. In my opinion, it’s a dead heat between Palmer and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah at the moment. They are both in stunning form.

  4. 'Very disappointed not to win the game'published at 11:25 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Fulham 1-1 Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta spoke to BBC Sport after Arsenal's draw against Fulham: "Very disappointed not to win the game, overall we absolutely dominated the game from start to end, we did all the things that we wanted to do during the game and unfortunately we concede one goal in one shot but the way the team played, the way the team wanted to win, it was unbelievable and very unfortunate for millimetres to win or don't win in this league and that's the disappointing thing tonight."

  5. Stat attackpublished at 11:18 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Fulham 1-1 Arsenal

    • Arsenal haven’t won any of their last three Premier League games against Fulham (D2 L1), their longest winless run against them in the top-flight since November 2012 (4).
    • The Cottagers are the only side Arsenal haven’t won against in the Premier League since the start of last season.
    • Since winning 10 of their first 11 Premier League away games in 2024 (D1), Arsenal have only won one of their last six league matches on the road (D3 L2).
    • Arsenal haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last six Premier League away games; their joint-longest run without one during Mikel Arteta’s time in charge (third run of six – also in March 2021 and May 2022).
    • Arsenal have scored 15 goals from corners in the Premier League in 2024, their joint-most in a calendar year in the competition (also 15 in 2023).

They struggle to have any different ideas. When you don't have that natural striker, that gives you another option that maybe puts balls into the box that opens the game, that is the problem right now.

That is the problem for Arsenal. But they can still rely on their synchronised swimming of set pieces because they came very close.

  7. 'Levy should be placed under the microscope'published at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty

Fred on X: Should the pressure be on Spurs chairman Daniel Levy instead of Ange Postecoglou - 24 years, 14 managers yet he never takes the fall?

Great question and one being posed by a few people now. When you have appointed that many managers it suggests you have been getting a lot of your choices wrong and should be under serious pressure, but that does not seem to be the way it works at Spurs.

Levy should be placed under the microscope if this continues to happen but he just seems to carry on.

It is a fact of life, however, that football managers are judged by results and at the moment Postecoglou’s results are not good enough.

I’ve seen Spurs this season when they have been scintillating, just take the wins at Manchester United and Manchester City, then they drop off so badly.

Postecoglou insists he will never change his style but if that style continues to be a losing one then we all know how this ends.

The approach is admirable and incredibly entertaining – but too often it is entertaining for the opposition rather than Spurs and their supporters.

It seems, though, that pragmatism is a dirty word for Postecoglou.

Silva 'proud' of Fulham momentum after draw with Arsenal

Marco Silva spoke to BBC Sport after Fulham's draw against Arsenal: "I'm more pleased with the way our players fought, the commitment, the organisation.

"It's always tough when we play against them but they know it will be tough too. We create a difficult scenario for them.

"We have to be honest and fair. On the ball it was one of the games we had less time on the ball. We scored a very good goal. Second half was more difficult. The team has less energy.

"They scored a really tight goal. The players were brave enough. Second half much more control from them but not big chances.

"Performance-wise it wasn't the best game from ourselves.

"What a goal, what a move and what a finish.

"It's been a tough week. In eight days we played Tottenham, Brighton and Arsenal. They've been great. The momentum is here for us."

  9. 'The reason Arsenal are being so successful at set piece is the delivery'published at 10:57 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Fulham 1-1 Arsenal

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on Football Daily

The reason Arsenal are being so successful at set piece is the delivery more than anything else. When you put the ball in the area, that is all you need to do. That is what Arsenal have got.

They have got more aggressive players to attack and hit that ball. The delivery is, not finding a player, it's put it in the area to give them half a chance and that is it.

  10. 'Arsenal’s failure to sign a 20-goals a season striker could hurt them'published at 10:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at the Frankfurt Arena

Richard Peel on X: Are Arsenal really so reliant on set pieces, and if teams work out how to stop them are they in a fight for the top four rather than the title?

Hi, Richard. I really don’t think Arsenal are over-reliant on set-pieces, they are just very good at them.

If you look at Arsenal’s team, lots of goals can come from elsewhere, they just happen to be scoring from set pieces at the moment.

What I do feel, however, and I have stated this on several occasions, is that Arsenal’s failure to sign a recognised 20-goals a season striker could hurt them over the course of the campaign and I still feel that.

I still think they can mount a title challenge but they have a real fight on their hands with Liverpool in front and Chelsea looking so good. For further insight on this question, I will direct you to an excellent piece by my colleague Sean Kearns on this very subject.

  11. Late disallowed goal holds Arsenalpublished at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Fulham 1-1 Arsenal

Arsenal were left to rue a missed opportunity to move to within four points of Premier League leaders Liverpool after being held by Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Bukayo Saka thought he had given the Gunners all three points when he headed in from close range two minutes from time in west London.

But the goal was chalked off following a VAR review, which found Gabriel Martinelli was offside during the build-up.

Raul Jimenez had given Fulham the lead in the first half when he slotted past David Raya from a tight angle for his sixth goal of the season.

Arsenal mustered just a single shot on target during the first half, with former Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno saving well from Saka.

The Gunners were level within six minutes of the second half when William Saliba converted after a well worked corner kick routine that saw Kai Havertz set-up the Frenchman.

Arsenal dominated for the remainder of the game and thought they had found a winner through Saka, only for the VAR to intervene to ensure Fulham earned a point.

The draw leaves Arsenal second, six points behind Liverpool having played a game more.

Arsenal had a late goal disallowed as they missed the chance to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to four points with a draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Bukayo Saka thought he had given the Gunners all three points when he headed in Gabriel Martinelli's cross two minutes from time, but the goal was disallowed after the Brazilian was found to be offside during the build-up.

Raul Jimenez, with his sixth goal of the season, put Fulham in front against the run of play when he latched on to Kenny Tete's ball down the line to fire past David Raya from a tight angle.

Arsenal, looking to capitalise on the postponement of Liverpool's Merseyside derby against Everton on Saturday, struggled to carve out opportunities from open play in the first half and managed just one shot on target from Saka.

But Mikel Arteta's side were level within six minutes of the second half after a well-worked corner kick routine saw William Saliba convert Kai Havertz's knockdown.

OK, it is fair to say that Chelsea's statement win at Tottenham has captured the imagination, but we must move on.

Don't worry, we will return to the topic of Cole Palmer et al at some point, but the Blues' victory over Spurs somewhat overshadowed another strong performance from Fulham at home to Arsenal.

There were also two cracking games at Ipswich and Leicester on Sunday.

  14. 'Imagine how much Palmer is worth now?'published at 10:31 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at the Frankfurt Arena

Allan: Having watched Cole Palmer deliver yet another fine performance yesterday, and what a superb footballer he is, I just wondered if it is known whether Manchester City inserted a 'buy-back clause' when he was sold to Chelsea?

Hi Allan, there is no “buy-back clause" in the deal, but at the time it was reported by the BBC that Manchester City could get a further £2.5m in add-ons on top of the £40m fee.

Just imagine how much Palmer is worth now?

What is becoming clear is that Manchester City have done Chelsea a huge favour by selling them a young player who has taken the Premier League by storm.

Pep Guardiola will be criticised, of course, for parting with such a talent, but in his defence he said of the deal at the time that he asked Palmer to stay after Riyad Mahrez left, but he still wanted to leave.

With the benefit of hindsight, and City’s need to refresh their squad, Guardiola may now wish he had stood firm and told Palmer to bide his time for regular first-team football.

  15. 'Consistently inconsistent' - Spurs' last seven league resultspublished at 10:25 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham's last seven Premier League fixtures tell you all you need to know about Ange Postecoglou's side this year - they are consistently inconsistent:

    • Crystal Palace 1-0 Tottenham
    • Tottenham 4-1 Aston Villa
    • Tottenham 1-2 Ipswich
    • Man City 0-4 Tottenham
    • Tottenham 1-1 Fulham
    • Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham
    • Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea

A huge win against Aston Villa was followed up by defeat at home to Ipswich and they are yet to taste victory in all competitions since that thumping win at the Etihad Stadium.

Only four teams have picked up less points in this period: Everton, Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton.

I think he [Ange Postecoglou] realises the seriousness of the situation he's in. He's going to stick to his guns but for me you can't be 2-0 up at home against Chelsea - one of the teams you're supposed to be competing against - and just fold.

When you look at it overall, the biggest worry I have for Tottenham is they don't seem to have the belief that they can go on and close games out and there are no leaders in this Tottenham side. There are no natural-born leaders at all to lead this team.

If you go 2-0 up against Chelsea, you need to shut up shop and be hard to beat and you have the players to hurt them on the counter, but there is no leadership.

  17. 'Tottenham are an enigma'published at 10:19 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent

Tottenham have become something of an enigma. A feature of their defeat to Chelsea were the delays when Tottenham supporters scrunched up their pieces of the pre-match mosaic in the South Stand and threw them down onto the pitch.

That mosaic featured the club motto Audere est Facere - to dare is to do. Under Ange Postecoglou they certainly dare, but it’s anyone’s guess whether they then go on to do.

The cup competitions have taken on a great weight now and it promises to be quite a night on Thursday at Ibrox when the hugely successful former Celtic manager returns to Glasgow to face Rangers, who are just above Tottenham in the Europa League table.

James Laycock on X: With Wissa and Mbeumo scoring again at the weekend (with the greatest respect to the fantastic, almost unbelievable progress that Brentford have made) why are they not at bigger clubs? They have been very good Premier League players for three full seasons before stepping up even more this season.

Maybe, just maybe, they are very happy at Brentford playing at a progressive club under a top-class manager in Thomas Frank. I have no doubt they will have caught the eye of other clubs, but at the moment they seem happy with The Bees.

Things can always change in the future – but for now Brentford and Frank will hope things stay exactly as they are.
