In the first half Elanga was the main threat on the pitch, not just for Newcastle but between the two teams. He is always on the move, always looking to get in behind, Barnes is the same on the left as well.

I think it is a ploy to get the ball out wide and let these wingers have a run at the Villa full-backs.

Aston Villa continue to attack now as Morgan Rogers finds Ollie Watkins with a flick on and Watkins gets away down the left. Rogers races into the box but the delivery is over his head.

It was a great ball in by Youri Tielemans but no-one attacked it and Austin MacPhee - Villa's set piece specialist - was left howling in frustration on the touchline.

Unai Emery has had a few words at half time and Villa have come out on the front foot straight away. It is encouraging that they've had their first shot on target.

Aston Villa have started this second half with more intent and it is Newcastle doing all the defending at the moment.

Some concern here for Newcastle because Dan Burn hurts himself after challenging Ollie Watkins and kneels on the pitch in pain. After a few moments, however, he is back on his feet and able to continue.

A ball is fizzed into the box and Boubacar Kamara connects, but directs his powerful header straight at Nick Pope.

PSR doesn't sit easy with me. I don't like it. Look at what Newcastle had to do last year, sell two of their promising youngsters to Brighton and Nottingham Forest to out themselves into this situation.

You can get to a certain point, like Newcastle and Aston Villa have, where all of a sudden a juggernaut is then in front of you. How do you get past that?

You look at the top four from last year and what they have gone on to spend. Now look at the position that Villa are in, not being able to spend a lot, Evann Guesand in for around €30m but the sale of Jacob Ramsey will cover that. They are in the situation now that Newcastle were in last season.
