  2. 'Ploy to let wingers get at Villa full-backs'published at 13:48 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

    Marc Albrighton
Former Aston Villa midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live at Villa Park

In the first half Elanga was the main threat on the pitch, not just for Newcastle but between the two teams. He is always on the move, always looking to get in behind, Barnes is the same on the left as well.

I think it is a ploy to get the ball out wide and let these wingers have a run at the Villa full-backs.

  3. Team newspublished at 13:47 British Summer Time

    Tottenham v Burnley (15:00 BST)

Tottenham XI: Vicario, Richarlison, Gray, Bergvall, Romero, Kudus, Johnson, Porro, Spence, Sarr, Van de Ven.

Burnley XI: Dubravka, Walker, Hartman, Esteve, Foster, Anthony, Ekdal, Sonne, Cullen, Hannibal, Laurent.

  4. Postpublished at 61 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle had the better chances in the first half but seem to have forgotten how to attack in this one, so much so that Dan Burn and Fabian Schar end up colliding into each other as they both go for a ball into the box.

  5. YELLOW CARDpublished at 59 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Boubacar Kamara is shown Aston Villa's first yellow card as he brings down Anthony Elanga.

A lot of pressure on Gordon today. I feel we still have the midfield on lock down but with no natural striker I think we're going to struggle. In all honesty I'd take a draw here today. #NUFC

  7. Postpublished at 56 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Aston Villa continue to attack now as Morgan Rogers finds Ollie Watkins with a flick on and Watkins gets away down the left. Rogers races into the box but the delivery is over his head.

  8. Postpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

    Nick Mashiter
BBC Sport football news reporter at Villa Park

It was a great ball in by Youri Tielemans but no-one attacked it and Austin MacPhee - Villa's set piece specialist - was left howling in frustration on the touchline.

  9. Postpublished at 54 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Aston Villa play a corner short before Youri Tielemans whips the ball towards the far post but no-one attacks it, much to Tielemans' frustration as he holds his hands up in the air.

  10. 'Villa straight on the front foot'published at 13:39 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

    Marc Albrighton
Former Aston Villa midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live at Villa Park

Unai Emery has had a few words at half time and Villa have come out on the front foot straight away. It is encouraging that they've had their first shot on target.

  11. Postpublished at 51 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Aston Villa have started this second half with more intent and it is Newcastle doing all the defending at the moment.

  12. Postpublished at 49 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Some concern here for Newcastle because Dan Burn hurts himself after challenging Ollie Watkins and kneels on the pitch in pain. After a few moments, however, he is back on his feet and able to continue.

  13. CLOSE!published at 48 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Aston Villa immediately start the half with their first shot on goal!

A ball is fizzed into the box and Boubacar Kamara connects, but directs his powerful header straight at Nick Pope.

Dare I say it...we look like a more cohesive attacking unit without Isak in the team.

  15. KICK-OFFpublished at 46 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

We're back under way with no changes for either side.

  16. 'PSR doesn't sit easy with me'published at 13:32 British Summer Time

    HT: Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

PSR doesn't sit easy with me. I don't like it. Look at what Newcastle had to do last year, sell two of their promising youngsters to Brighton and Nottingham Forest to out themselves into this situation.

You can get to a certain point, like Newcastle and Aston Villa have, where all of a sudden a juggernaut is then in front of you. How do you get past that?

You look at the top four from last year and what they have gone on to spend. Now look at the position that Villa are in, not being able to spend a lot, Evann Guesand in for around €30m but the sale of Jacob Ramsey will cover that. They are in the situation now that Newcastle were in last season.

Reckon Emery will bring on quick wingers to attack the space behind Newcastle. Playing midfielders everywhere doesn't always work.

  18. Postpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time

    HT: Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

    Peter Crouch
Former Aston Villa striker on TNT Sports

Barnes and Gordon in particular have combined really well.

But if they don't score, the question marks are still there about the centre forward.

  19. Postpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time

    HT: Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

    Joe Cole
Former England midfielder on TNT Sports

There is such a lack of quality from Villa, on the opening day it is unacceptable.

Unai Emery will get into them at half-time, they have to be better.

Villa players still on the beach- should be three or four down.
