  2. 'Villa should still win this'published at 18:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

I think it is just the final ball really. Don't use the same ball over the top every time.

Eventually, it is going to work for them and it did before half-time but they need a little bit better delivery.

Don't panic. Yes, Monaco are quick on the break but Aston Villa will get chances. They haven't been brilliant but they have got better and were the better side by the 45th minute. They should win this still.

  3. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Monaco 1-0 Aston Villa

    Work for Villa to do.

  4. 'Akliouche must hit that on target'published at 18:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    HT: Monaco 1-0 Aston Villa

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Digne is caught on his heels there and should never be caught there. Great play by Minamino but he must hit that on target.

Akliouche put it over the top and now it is half-time.

  5. CLOSE!published at 18:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Monaco 1-0 Aston Villa

In the last seconds of the half, Monaco should have made it two. Maghnes Akliouche is free on the right side of the penalty area but the finish is rushed and lacking composure, with him sending the ball wastefully over the top when unmarked.

  6. 'Watkins has got to score'published at 18:36 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Monaco 1-0 Aston Villa

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is a good save by the goalkeeper but Watkins knows that one-on-one, with the keeper a little bit off his line, he has got to score.

  7. GREAT SAVE!published at 18:36 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Monaco 1-0 Aston Villa

We haven't seen much of Ollie Watkins but he so nearly gets on the scoresheet in first half injury time. Emiliano Buendia does well to hold off a challenge and nudge the ball into Watkins' path and he is on the edge of the area and central.

But a great save from Radoslaw Majecki who is down quickly to his right to get a vital hand on the low shot to divert it wide.

Great to see Buendia back. He looks eager to impress but needs to calm down on the ball.

Mateo Retegui's third Champions League goal in the 11th minute is all that separates the sides at the break.

It didn't look like there was a great deal in it but the worry is that Konsa has twisted something there.

Worrying signs for defender Ezri Konsa, as he is getting both legs stretched off at the same time by the Villa medical team.

He's OK to carry on, for now at least.

  13. 'Too easy for the keeper from Bailey'published at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Monaco 1-0 Aston Villa

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is a shame for Bailey, who was falling down as he hit it.

It is another one where if you have a lot of games under your belt you are probably coming on to that and caressing it. It was probably a little too easy for the goalkeeper.

Villa have responded well to falling behind. Emiliano Buendia with a good run through the middle and he slides a pass through. Ollie Watkins can't take it in his stride, but it falls nicely for Leon Bailey, whose effort is saved by Radoslaw Majecki, who flung up an arm to keep the ball out.

Aston Villa get a free-kick in a decent position, central and 25 yards out. Lucas Digne steps up and whips it up and over the wall before a save for the cameras from home goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki, diving to his left and catching it.

There is a real feeling in this Aston Villa team that they can get the ball in behind the Monaco centre-backs, who aren't that quick at turning.

Home goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki has to sprint off his goalline to get a fist to the ball to deny Morgan Rogers, who is playing a key role for Villa.

Buendia looked a bit rusty in the first 10 or 15 minutes but he looked composed and sharp on the ball there.
