Where is the equivalent of Aberdeen, Dortmund, Monaco or Porto on Pep's CV? It isn't there, so unlike Fergie, Klopp, Wenger or Mourinho he's never learnt to overcome adversity at a club that's not top of the tree. And frankly, it shows.

Manchester City have reportedly paid £59m, plus add-ons, for Egypt international Omar Marmoush.

That's over £100m more than any other Premier League side has shelled out in the winter window as of yet.

Good morning. So Man City give Haaland an obscene contract and sign three players for £123m but their glaring deficiencies are at both full backs and central midfield. Rodri coming back might not be the answer as he may not be the same player he was before his injury.

    Robert McLaren from Glasgow

Man City didn't become a bad team overnight... they did over years (although they're more average than bad). Letting great academy players go. Recruiting attacking players who don't track back. Trying to play a possession based game with a talented but ageing midfield. Deliberately having a small squad. Maybe it's hindsight but these decisions are costing them now.

Manchester City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain speaking to the club website about the signing of Omar Marmoush:

"Omar is an accomplished and exciting forward, and I’m delighted he’s joining us. He’s had an outstanding season, and every time we have watched him, he has influenced matches.

"He has all the attributes a top-class attacker requires. He has outstanding pace and awareness, and he is exceptional in front of goal. He can also play a number of different positions, which is a really valuable asset.

“I also have no doubt that working with Pep and the technical staff here at City will see him further develop his superb attacking talent."

The buying splurge by Man City just shows that Pep has been unable to coach his team out of the dip. His first managerial crisis has highlighted a massive failure of leadership.

So much talk of Man City qualifying next week! Surely we are just postponing the inevitable, they’re not going much further. City would be better off without those extra games & concentrating on getting back into the top four for next year, which let’s face it, is still a major task. Going out now may seem a set back but no where near as much as not even qualifying for next years CL

    Anon

For all Man City's moaning about injuries, don't they only have three players out at the moment? Rodri, Bobb, and Ake. So much for Guardiola's "give me my players back" excuse for their poor form.

How PSG exposed Man City's weakness on the flanks

It was impressive to watch, real high intensity. That was a big game for both sides, it looked like Manchester City were cruising. The only thing that has crept into this City team is, before Man City go 2-0 up, they manage the game so so well. They keep the ball, they dictate play and at the minute, that's just what they are lacking.

  16. 'Man City were miles off'published at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time

    PSG 4-2 Man City

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on the Football Daily podcast

Manchester City did collapse. I agree there was an element of fortune, to the City goal, both of them actually. But they came from real positive driving, first one from Akanji and then from Nunes, from the right-back position. So the two defenders really did make it happen and then there were some good fortune, but I felt like they'd earnt it.

And then it was just, it's hard to explain, distances were a mile off.

PSG got a bit of confidence back, they got that first goal, you just knew the feeling through this ground, big trouble for City here, they couldn't recover, they were miles off, off the ball, every man, people running off them.

Man City haven’t become a bad team overnight. It’s down to the manager to refocus the players. Any other club would change the manager but they won’t do that. Perhaps they need a new assistant to assume temporary control?

MOTD pundits discuss Man City's recent struggles

I think the performance against Ipswich, we can say now, papered over the cracks to an extent. That was ruthlessly exposed by a really exciting PSG team with some terrific young talent.

Joao Neves in their midfield really caught the eye, the forward players were relentless really.

Dembele when he came on was really really good. We were told before the game and after the game who watch PSG regularly that this was out-of-step of how they’ve been recently.

But for Luis Enrique last night, the PSG coach, former team mate of Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, it was a tactical triumph for him and it puts City in peril.
