Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola told TNT Sports post-match: "I accept the defeat because the best team won. We have a last chance at home against Club Brugge. If we win then hopefully we can qualify.

"The game was never like we wanted but for that I give so much credit to PSG. They are an extraordinary team. But at 2-0 if we could manage it... but they scored right after. Then if we could keep the ball a little bit and stay like that it would have been better but we could not do it.

"To defend the result you have to keep the ball and we did not do that. They had it more, they attacked better and that is why it was difficult."

On City potentially going out of the competition: "It could happen. If we don't win, we don't deserve it.

Brixham Reds: The Champions League format is much better than before, playing eight different teams is miles better for the fans and the the clubs.

  3. 'City could not keep the ball'published at 07:31 Greenwich Mean Time

    PSG 4-2 Man City

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on MOTD: UEFA Champions League

Manchester City looked like they suffered for the vast majority of that second half, which is unlike City, and they were never able to rebound because the pressure was on all the time.

This one [losing the lead] feels different to the Brentford one [leading 2-0] and different to the Feyenoord one [leading 3-0], because Paris St-Germain were by far the better team.

The most shocking thing about City's performance is how poorly they managed the game from 2-0 up. City teams of the past would have taken the sting out of the game and stayed in control, but instead they could not keep the ball at all.

Not many people thought that Manchester City would be in this position whereby they would have to have a must-win game against Club Brugge in the final game to essentially scrape through into the knockout rounds.

5playersfrommcrwinpl: How poor is the format in the Champions League this year? Man City could still be champions of Europe yet have lost 3 games and drawn 2. Dropped 13 points out of 21. Yet win next game they qualify and will face a poor team in the next game and then they are back in with a shout in the last 16.

  5. How the Champions League table standspublished at 07:25 Greenwich Mean Time

    PSG 4-2 Man City

This is how the bottom half of the league table looks after seven games. Any side that finishes 25th or below after eight games will be eliminated.

Manchester City - European champions in 2023 - currently occupy 25th spot, but with Stuttgart in 24th entertaining Paris Saint-Germain in 22nd next week in a winner-takes-all clash, that gives City a route into the play-offs.

If City win at home to Club Brugge, then Pep Guardiola's side will scrape into the play-offs. If they draw or lose to Club Brugge, City will be out and their European campaign will be all over before the end of January.

Manchester City's chances of Champions League progress are in peril after they lost a two-goal lead to slump to defeat against Paris St-Germain at Parc des Princes.

On a torrid, rain-lashed night in Paris, all the frailties that have haunted City in a season of decline were laid bare as Pep Guardiola's side crumbled dramatically in the face of PSG's pace and creation.

City's defeat means they risk elimination from the Champions League as they stand 25th in the table, having to win their final game at home to Club Brugge next Wednesday.

It was pure theatre in Paris after Manchester City looked to have turned the game in their favour when substitute Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland struck twice in the first eight minutes of the second half.

PSG, however, had City's defence living on its nerves all night and hit back instantly when substitute Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola levelled the game before the hour.

Dembele then struck the bar before the outstanding Joao Neves headed home Vitinha's free-kick after being left unmarked, and City's agony was compounded in stoppage time when, after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check, Goncalo Ramos' powerful strike gave the scoreline a more realistic appearance.

  9. How it stands for the British fivepublished at 07:09 Greenwich Mean Time

This is how it stands for the British clubs in the Champions League...

    • Liverpool - top, through to last 16, finishing either first or second.
    • Arsenal - third, all but through to last 16, as long as they don't get thrashed by Girona next week.
    • Aston Villa - ninth, need to win and hope results go their way to make last 16, but guaranteed at least a play-off place.
    • Celtic - 18th, guaranteed to be in at least play-offs, but unlikely to finish in top eight.
    • Manchester City - 25th, will be in the play-offs and unseeded if they beat Club Bruges at home in final match. City will be eliminated from European competition if they draw or lose against the Belgians.

All 18 matches in the final game week take place at the same time - 20:00 GMT on Wednesday, 29 January. Aston Villa v Celtic, Girona v Arsenal, Manchester City v Club Bruges, PSV Eindhoven v Liverpool.
