  3. 'We deserved something from the game' – Rowettpublished at 19:44 British Summer Time 9 August

    FT: Oxford United 0-1 Portsmouth

    Oxford United

Oxford United manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Oxford:

"If you look at the game probably for most of the first half and a little bit of the second I felt we were a little off it. We couldn’t quite connect possession together well enough or move quickly enough to not allow them some moments in the final third.

"We allowed them to dictate. But then the last 20 minutes was exactly what the first 70 should have been. Little bit more edge about us and a bit more quality. On that last 20 minutes we deserved to get something out of the game but we didn’t get anything.

"[On the penalty appeal on Stan Mills] Maybe [Mills made too much of it] but I watched a game last night where a player gets shoved in the back and falls a little bit over-accentuated but it is a penalty.

"Maybe if Stan doesn’t make as much of it, but that is how players do things these days. It was a penalty."

  8. 'Huge amount of work to do' – Manningpublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 9 August

    FT: Norwich 1-2 Millwall

    Norwich City

Norwich City manager Liam Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"That was a real mixed bag. The first 25 minutes were positive with a lot of possession and control in good areas then we just shifted momentum in their favour.

"But the second half was not where we needed it to be in terms of the game we wanted.

"First game of the season and I know some fans aren’t happy but ultimately it is about stepping back and look at the things which weren’t good enough.

"I am really clear we have to earn the right off people to build the excitement but one game won’t define our season. We are going to have highs and lows. The biggest thing is we are going to improve. Next time we play we step up and take that responsibility.

"There is a huge amount of work to do but we have to accept it."

[On Josh Sargent's future] There are no guarantees [he is staying]. He is our player at the moment but there is still time in the window. But we have made it quite clear what we think of him."

  9. 'It's a pleasing day' - Masonpublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 9 August

    FT: West Brom 1-0 Blackburn

    West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion head coach Ryan Mason told BBC WM:

"The most important was to start the season at home with a win and we've done that in a good manner with a clean sheet, so it's a pleasing day.

"It's nowhere near the end product, we're literally six weeks into something but the thing we can guarantee is a togetherness, a willingness to fight for each other and we saw that and more importantly, we felt that."

  10. 'It was a bit hectic and chaotic' - Ismaelpublished at 19:35 British Summer Time 9 August

    FT: West Brom 1-0 Blackburn

    Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers head coach Valerien Ismael told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"From the performance, it was a good away game from us.

"We had a lot of new faces, the players arrived this week, it was a little bit hectic and chaotic.

"But I think throughout the 90 minutes we were really solid.

"What we have to work on is our work in the final third - we should be doing better with the last cross, the last pass - we didn't really test the goalkeeper, so we must shoot more on target."

Revenge is a dish best served swiftly and dramatically.

A quite remarkable game ends 4-1 to the visitors.

It's less than three months since Bristol City slumped to a 6-0 aggregate defeat by Sheffield United in the play-off semi-finals but fears of any scar tissue from that were quickly put to bed.

Scott Twine gave them a very early lead with a wonderful free-kick before Tyrese Campbell levelled it up.

Ross McCrorie made it 2-1 against the run of play before the interval.

City made it 3-1 in the first minute of the second half and before the Blades could recompose themselves it was 4-1 through Scott Twine's deflected shot.

Ruben Selles' first game as Sheffield United boss ends in a nightmare loss and Gerhard Struber's first game as Bristol City manager in a dream win.

    Chris Morgan
Former Sheff Utd defender on BBC Radio Sheffield

It's another good save from Michael Cooper.

I sort of feared then because if that ends up five on the breakaway then there's a lot of dissapointed people.

Sinclair Armstrong wants to get himself in on the act but Michael Cooper denies him at his near post.

He maybe should have just squared for Sam Bell to tap in really.

Five minutes of time added on.

I was at Bramall Lane for the second leg of the play-offs in May as the Blades won 6-0 on aggregate.

They played no added time that day. Home fans, those who remain, will wish the referee had done the same today.
