Just back onto Man City, but I wonder if those who questioned City's signing of Donnarumma are now feeling a bit silly. He's been massive to our success recently, and has offered stability in goal which we didn't previously have!

Chelsea will be looking to record back-to-back wins in the Champions League when they host Ajax at Stamford Bridge tonight.

Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich condemned the Blues to a 3-1 defeat in their opening game but Enzo Maresca's side bounced back with a 1-0 win over Jose Mourinho's Benfica last time around.

They have momentum entering this game as they have followed up that result with impressive wins over reigning Premier League champions Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Ajax, meanwhile, are bottom of the league phase table with two defeats and are winless in three games in all competitions.

Last season's Eredivisie runners-up are currently in fourth place and nine points adrift of leaders Feyenoord after nine games, piling pressure on manager John Heitinga, who was previously an assistant at Liverpool.

"They always try to play their football," Maresca said of Ajax.

"For sure, it will be a difficult game. They are a club that have won this competition in the past. They want to prove to everyone that they can come here and beat us. We are going to try and do exactly the same."

Chelsea's remaining six league phase fixtures:

    • 22 Oct: Ajax (h)
    • 05 Nov: Qarabag (a)
    • 25 Nov: Barcelona (h)
    • 09 Dec: Atalanta (a)
    • 21 Jan: Pafos (h)

Inevitably Woltemade and Isak will be compared and they are different players but I certainly think Woltemade's link-up play is better than Isak's and its something that's benefitted Newcastle well. Would like to see Woltemade in a few more goal scoring opportunities with the ball at his feet however.

  5. Frankfurt boss Toppmoller expecting 'world-class' Liverpool teampublished at 12:23 BST 22 October

Eintracht Frankfurt v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Dino Toppmoller says Liverpool "seem to lack a bit of a spark at the moment" but have been "the better team" in each game of their current four-match losing streak.

The Reds visit Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday on the back of defeats at Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea - and, most recently, by Manchester United at Anfield.

It is the worst losing run the club have experienced since 2014, under Brendon Rodgers, and Toppmoller believes this will only add to their motivation.

"When you watch the games, which of course we did, you see that they seem to lack a bit of a spark at the moment," he said.

"But in every game, they've been the better team and have had more chances at goal.

"We're expecting a world-class team. You've got to be aware of what it does to a team to lose four in a row."

Arne Slot left £116m summer signing Floran Wirtz on the bench for Sunday's loss to United, with the Germany international yet to register a goal or assist since his arrival at Anfield.

However, Toppmoller said Wirtz's performances were "quite decent, even if he hasn't got the numbers he had in Leverkusen".

"He's at a club where the spotlight is so bright and where people across the world are always watching," he added.

"I'm incredibly convinced of his quality. I hope he doesn't show that tomorrow, that's something we should worry about."

  6. 'Flight delay not an excuse' - Slotpublished at 12:18 BST 22 October

Meanwhile, Liverpool's preparations for tonight's game in Frankfurt were not ideal as their flight to Germany was delayed by a number of hours last night.

It meant Arne Slot's pre-match news conference was cancelled but the Liverpool boss has spoken to the club's official website and insists the travel issues cannot be used as any excuse ahead of the game this evening.

"No, it will not impact the build-up to [tonight's] game," he said.

"We have trained over here at the AXA. Normally we would have gone to Frankfurt a few hours earlier, now we are a few hours later. But, no, that can never be an excuse for the game tomorrow."

  7. Recap - Today's top storiespublished at 12:13 BST 22 October

So we have been busy on this live page this morning looking back at how the three Premier League sides fared in the Champions League last night as Arsenal thrashed Atletico Madrid 4-0, Newcastle beat Benfica 3-0 and Man City overcame Villareal 2-0.

Here's a recap of all the key points we have talked about so far:

We have been previewing Liverpool already but there is still plenty more to come in our build-up to tonight's Champions League games while we will also hear from new Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche and West Ham's Nuno Espirito Santo among others a bit later. So stay tuned.

  9. Selection dilemmas for Liverpoolpublished at 12:02 BST 22 October

Eintracht Frankfurt v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

Split graphic: Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Mohamed SalahImage source, Getty Images

After seven wins on the spin to start the season things were looking good for Liverpool on paper but there were still concerns around their performances.

The hope for the fans - and likely Arne Slot and his players - was that they could keep going and those concerns would fade as performances steadily improved once new players gelled and got up to full fitness.

Instead, four losses in a row would brought those issues into sharp focus and Slot now has a number of selection dilemmas.

Big money summer signing Florian Wirtz has not started the past two league games after an underwhelming start - no goals, no assists - but Liverpool have lost both and even in his slow start, there have been glimpses of the quality he can offer. So is now the time to bring the £100m man back in?

With Ryan Gravenberch out against Frankfurt, that could be the quick fix with Dominik Szoboszlai slotting in a little deeper alongside Alexis Mac Allister, who might otherwise have been most likely to drop out.

Then there is the Mohamed Salah question. Liverpool's talisman for so long, who had arguably the best season of his career in 24-25, has been well off it this campaign and his undroppable status may become a thing of the past.

But if Salah is dropped, who replaces him on the right? Jeremie Frimpong? Federico Chiesa?

Meanwhile, Hugo Ekitike can consider himself extremely unfortunate to have lost his place up front to Alexander Isak given his superb start to the season. Given the Frenchman is one of Liverpool's few in-form players and Isak's struggles to get up to speed, is it time for Ekitike to retake his starting spot?

Or might Slot choose to pair his two top class number nines?

There are more questions besides but, after four losses in a row, that is to be expected.

  10. Gravenberch out but could return this weekendpublished at 11:55 BST 22 October

Eintracht Frankfurt v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

Liverpool midfielder Ryan GravenberchImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool will be without central midfielder Ryan Gravenberch against Eintracht Frankfurt tonight because of an ankle injury sustained against Manchester United.

The Netherlands international has been one of the Reds' best performers so far this season but Reds' boss Arne Slot has allayed fears over the severity of the issue and has not ruled him out this Saturday's match at Brentford.

"Ryan is not available for the Frankfurt game, hopefully he will be available at the weekend," Slot told Liverpool's official website.

"But it's an ankle injury, we have to wait and see, give him a bit of time and see where he is when we come back from Frankfurt.

"That already means I definitely have to change one player and with him not being there, that might mean something for others as well, because he has such a particular quality in our squad, which we've seen when we played Bournemouth for example, when we played the Community Shield - that we missed a little bit of a player that was always protecting our back four."

Time to look ahead to tonight's Champions League games. There are three English clubs involved again with Chelsea hosting Ajax and Tottenham travelling to Monaco.

But we'll start by looking at the Premier League's crisis club - there always has to be at least one - Liverpool. They are away at Eintracht Frankfurt tonight hoping to end a run of four straight defeats in all competitions...

If you're asking if you can replace Erling Haaland, Matt, the short answer is surely 'no'. Not with a straight swap anyway.

To paraphrase/ directly quote - I can't remember the line exactly so it could be either - Brad Pitt in the 2011 smash Moneyball, you have to "replace him in the aggregate" and go about it that way.

But yeah, City will hope they don't have to replace him at all.

Manchester City's Rico Lewis, speaking to TNT Sports: "We felt in control for most of the game. There's always things we can do better and we think there were a few spells that they had that we could have prevented, but we have to be harsh on ourselves because we want to win the competition.

"Happy with a clean sheet and a win. It relieves a bit of stress and puts us in good stead for the next game. But we have to win them all - home or away."

On City getting back to their best: "I think we've got some confidence back. When you're playing with confidence there's nothing to stop you but yourself.

"Everyone trusts each other as well and there's nothing better than us having each other's backs too."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports: "Villarreal is a tough place to come. We played really good.

"At the end they had one or two chances but we played a fantastic game. A good step for us in this tournament.

"Last season was not good. Our numbers in the Champions League in the last years are not bad. Personally my numbers are not bad.

"But last season was tough for us, the vibe and how the team are playing now make me feel fine."

On Nico Gonzalez, who was substituted off: "Knock on the foot. Hopefully nothing serious."

"I said before the game, he got 22 Premier League goals last season and it was deemed a disappointment. That's the levels that he's set.

"And with this Man City side, who have added more creativity in Kevin De Bruyne's absence. They seem to be creating the chances again for Haaland. And of course, he's going to put it away if the ball comes into the box."

Tuesday's triumph at Villarreal extended City's unbeaten run in all competitions to nine games and they are well placed in fifth position in the group phase of the Champions League, winning two and drawing the other of their three matches.

They are already showing an improvement on their performance last season when they finished in 22nd place to go into the play-offs, where they were knocked out by Real Madrid.

They face the La Liga giants on their next European away trip in December, heading into that match having ended a run of five without victory on the road in the competition.

City's previous Champions League win outside Manchester came on 1 October 2024 in their 4-0 thrashing of Slovan Bratislava but they never looked in any trouble against Villarreal.

The early chances set the tempo and scoring two goals in the first half allowed City to control and see out the contest in the second period, showcasing their growing confidence.

Ruthless striker Haaland loves scoring goals against any team but particularly enjoys facing Spanish opposition, having now netted nine goals in as many games against opponents from La Liga.

Boss Guardiola continues to take pleasure in playing Villarreal too as he has never tasted defeat against the opponents in nine meetings.

One concern will be an apparent injury to midfielder Nico Gonzalez, who himself has been playing in the absence of Rodri, hobbling off just short of the hour mark.
