Back in February I sent in a message that Spurs’ season was done following their elimination from the Carabao Cup, as at the time that seemed their only realistic chance of silverware and success. How wrong I, and many others, clearly were. I have no idea if Tottenham will stick with Ange, or even if they should, but that’s an issue for next season where they will start in the same position as every other Premier League team. Enjoy the celebration Spurs fans, it’s been a long time coming.

I'm an Arsenal fan and even I, after the season they've had, have to say well done to Postecoglou and if Levy was intelligent he'd now invest to try and get them somewhere in the Champions League. History says otherwise though.

    Sam

Pains me to say this as an Arsenal fan - well done Spurs. The drought is over. You have a trophy - dare I say your Euro record outshines ours. That's where it ends but credit where credit is due. United are further away than most thought. Shaw, Mount, Casemiro - all questionable selections. Dreadful.

  4. Europa League has been the focus since January - Postecogloupublished at 09:03 British Summer Time 22 May

    Tottenham 1-0 Man Utd

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou delivered an honest answer with regard to when he started prioritising Europa League during last night's post-match news conference: "I think when we got to the end of January - the end of the transfer window and assessed our situation - I made a decision there and then that this was the trophy we were going to go for.

"It was at odds with what other people believed at the time we should do and that's understandable but I really believed we could win this.

"Everything we've done since then, everything we've done in training and the teams I've selected were making sure that when these games came around that we were in the best possible position to tackle them.

"That has come at a cost for sure in the league and I have to take responsibility for that, but I just felt the end game of winning something was more important to me and it's the only way that I was going to do it."

I had THE WORST nightmare last night. I dreamt that United were in the Europa League final in an all-or-nothing game and outplayed their opponent on every metric in a dire game where both teams were awful, Onana didn't even have a save to make, and we still lost to the scrappiest own goal imaginable. In this nightmare, our opponent who won the trophy were Spurs - Spurs of all teams! - and it meant that we didn't have any European football next year in an absolute disaster that could set the project back massively, and it meant that this already-horrendous-season has no redeemable quality whatsoever. There was no silver lining, no light at the end of the tunnel. I felt much pain, much despair, and a sad realisation that midweek nights next year I won't be able to watch United playing in Europe even though half the league will be doing so. But thankfully it was just a nightmare, right?

  6. A stark confessionpublished at 08:54 British Summer Time 22 May

    Tottenham 1-0 Man Utd

    Sami Mokbel
    BBC Sport Senior football correspondent

The story of Tottenham's campaign starts with the visit of one of European football's emerging Golden Boys.

It is a little known secret that Spurs' preparations for the 2024-25 campaign started with a visit from Desire Doue.

The young attacker, then of Rennes, was so intrigued by Postecoglou's project that he dashed across the Channel to make an undercover viewing of the club's training ground in Enfield amid optimism that a deal for the young attacker was achievable.

Fast-forward nine months and Doue - who signed for Paris St-Germain - is preparing for a Champions League final.

In retrospect, Spurs' failure to lure the 19-year-old was the sign of what was to come - the start of a series of blows during a truly forgettable domestic season.

It was intriguing then that Postecoglou says that once the January window closed that he decided he would focus the team's attentions on winning the Europa League.

He candidly admitted that his approach was "at odds" with certain people at the club. That was a stark confession and a clear indication of why – despite lifting a trophy - Postecoglou's future is still under threat.

You need only look at the Premier League table to ascertain how putting all their eggs in the European basket affected Spurs' domestic form.

Equally, however, how do you tell Postecoglou he was wrong to prioritise the Europa League after what unfolded on Wednesday?

Ange Postecoglou may well agree with you there, Mark.

He was eager to point out the impact winning a trophy could, or maybe eve should, have on Tottenham's future after making good on his "always win a trophy in my second season" claim: "People misinterpreted me. It was not me boasting, just me making a declaration and I believed it. I had this thing inside me more than anything else.

"I know our league form has been unacceptable, but coming third was not going to change this football club, winning a trophy would, that was my ambition and I was prepared to wear it if it did not happen.

"People kept reminding me of it because we were getting closer, but I'm happy with that."

Very happy Spurs fan. I hope the club back Ange - the squad has proven it can play in Europe or the league but not both, this is the time for Levy to open the cheque book. Ange has conducted himself impeccably this year, while under unfair pressure. Full respect to him. Respect to the opposing fans who have wished us well, who recognise the massive achievement for Spurs.

Ange Postecoglou's relationship with the press has been somewhat fractious this season.

This came to a head in his pre-match news conference when the Australian took Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick to task for saying he was on the edge of being described as a "hero or a clown".

Well the Spurs boss will have woken up to some much more pleasant reading this morning.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou mentioned plans for a parade on Friday.

More from Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou on his future beyond this season: "I would be disappointed if we don't continue on this path. It is difficult to buy into one person's vision. I have been a serial winner. I know people dismiss what I have won because it didn't happen here, but they were hard earned.

"There is huge relief. You carry the weight of responsibility and 150 times I have been a spokesman for this club.

"There are no planned meetings. I'll go back to my hotel room with friends and family, open up a nice bottle of scotch, a massive parade on Friday, game on Sunday against Brighton and then holiday. Then que sera, sera."

We are proud of Ange here in Melbourne. I hope he sings a certain Manfred Mann song today.

    Richard Dunn

If not Ange, then who? Mourinho and Conte struggled, so if they got a new manager in then it's a new project and another 2-3 years anyway. I think Ange has earned the right to see it through and the players will be on board now too, if they weren't already!

    Marc, Villa fan

As an Arsenal fan it's hard to see your bitter rival win silverware and the match was barely entertaining, but I'm so happy for Ange, he deserves this and they should stick with him next season because he is a true winner, he's proved it.

  13. 'I don't feel I have completed the job'published at 08:18 British Summer Time 22 May

    Tottenham 1-0 Man Utd

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou was asked about his future in his post-match news conference: "I've had such a laser focus on winning this, whatever happens, happens.

"I'm the manager of the football club, that decision is not in my hands. All I know is having this [medal] around my neck means we have won a trophy. I don't feel I have completed the job.

"We're still building this team. It's a young team, we need to add experience and now we are in the Champions League. I've been trying to build a team that can be challenging for the next four or five years.

"Since I came here I had the belief of trying to win something and we have done that and I want to build on it."

With no Champions League football we can forget Gyokeres or Osimhen. We're more likely to sign Steve from Royal Oak Pub FC.

Nathaniel, a man that just saw his team hand Spurs their first trophy in 17 years

I have no sympathy for Manchester United. Their attitude and performances in the league have been awful this year and they saw the Europa League as a shortcut to earning a Champions League spot. Now they have to face the cold reality. 16th in the league, no European football next season and an aging squad.

Son Heung-min's reaction is in stark contrast to the Manchester United players, who have been facing up to life after European football and the undoubted inquest that is sure to follow their disappointing display in Wednesday's Europa League final defeat...

"We're very sorry," Manchester United defender Luke Shaw said to the fans, "for what they have had to go through this season. It's been nowhere near good enough and I can only apologise for that.

"We have to look for the positives and the only positive thing is we can only go up from here."

The Spurs players clearly bought into what they were asked to do. Last night, and through the season, Spurs players have complimented Ange and defended him. If Levy decides Ange must go, it may not be a popular decision with the players.

    Paul, Dublin

It would be so Spursy to sack a manager that has won our first trophy in 17 years. The injuries were a big reason why the Premier League season didn't go to plan and in the latter stages of the season, when players returned from injury, the Europa League was the only thing left to play for. He needs to start as manager next season and see how it goes.

    Mat, Norwich

Ange did a cracking job in his first season with what he had, which tee'd him up for the Europa League this year. Say what you want about him, the guy put his money where his mouth is. 100% deserves a third year imo.
