As the great Brian Clough said, let referees get on with their jobs. Even now, the calls are still subjective and divide opinions, it's ridiculous that we are even having this conversation again. Teams hiding behind refs because they are making mistakes themselves is irony at its best.

Just want to point out that all the VAR chat about the Everton v Nottingham Forest game has neglected to mention one thing. If VAR wasn’t available, the game would have still finished 2-0 to Everton anyway. VAR had zero influence on the game because it decided not to overturn anything.

PGMOL will let Nottingham Forest hear the audio from the exchange between referee Anthony Taylor and VAR Stuart Attwell during Sunday’s controversial game at Everton – but only in private for now.

Forest have demanded the audio is released as part of their demand for full transparency around the three incidents they believe should have resulted in penalties during their 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park.

The club believe precedent has been set by PGMOL’s release of the audio that led to Liverpool not being awarded a perfectly good goal at Tottenham earlier this season.

However, PGMOL believe that was an extreme case as it was a factual error, with the officials mistakenly stating what was an incorrect on-field decision around Luis Diaz being offside should stand, when it should have been overturned.

Referees’ chief Howard Webb is due to make another appearance on ‘Match Officials Mic’d Up’ next Tuesday.

There has been no decision yet which incidents will be assessed in the programme, although given the storm they have generated, it would be a surprise if the incidents at Everton were not included.

PGMOL make the audio available privately to any club who asks for it and the same is true in this instance, even though the Football Association and Premier League are set to take action over Forest’s public response to Sunday’s game, which included an insinuation that Attwell was a Luton supporter any would have a vested interest in the outcome of the game.

  5. Everton search for investment to push through 777 dealpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 23 April

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Everton are searching for third-party investment in order to push through the takeover by 777 Partners.

The Miami-based firm agreed a deal to buy the Toffees from majority owner Farhad Moshiri in September, but are yet to gain approval from the Premier League.

On Monday, Bloomberg reported, external the club's main financial adviser Deloitte has been seeking fresh funding from sports-focused investors and lenders to get 777’s deal over the line.

BBC Sport has been told this is "standard practice contingency planning" and the process may identify other potential lenders to 777.

Sources close to British-Iranian businessman Moshiri have told BBC Sport they remain "working on completing the deal with 777".

It is understood there are no other parties waiting in the wings to takeover should the takeover fall through and the focus is fully on 777.

The Americans have so far loaned £180m to Everton for day-to-day operational costs, which will be turned in equity once the deal is completed, but repaying money owed to MSP Sports Capital remains a stumbling block.

777 says it can stump up the £158m that is owed on that front and once that is settled, it is felt the deal should be completed soon after.

The United performance was subpar, but Coventry played well. I see lots of people saying Man U should be ashamed, but Coventry despite being a Championship side played a great second half.

  9. Feisty Ten Hagpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 23 April

Man Utd v Sheff Utd (Wed, 20:00BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Erik ten Hag was on the front foot today.

The Manchester United boss was mildly irritated by being asked after Sunday's FA Cup semi-final if he was embarrassed by his team's performance.

Clearly that irritation has been festering over the intervening couple of days because he was ready with the answer, turning the criticism on the media at this lunchtime's press conference.

Given I asked the first question, the answer was aimed at me.

I don't take that personally and in any case, Ten Hag is allowed to criticise who he likes.

But I think it is naive to believe he can manage a club the size of Manchester United, come within a toe-nail of being knocked out of the FA Cup by a lower league club, having been 3-0 up with 20 minutes left, and neutral observers not think they have been somewhat fortunate.

And he has accumulated 115 points in the top flight since his appointment. Only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool have accumulated more.

Since arriving at the club in November 2022, he has guided them to a seventh-place finish to qualify for the Europa Conference League and this season they sit fourth in the Premier League, with Champions League qualification in their sights.

Regarding Ten Hag's comments about the bad luck for the deflected goal and penalty against Coventry, there are still glaring issues for the team and it only makes sense to question it. There doesn't seem to be a style or pattern of play, players are out of form and what looks to be a general lack of desire.

A talking point from the FA Cup semi-final between Coventry and Manchester United was the actions of Anthony.

The United winger cupped his ears mockingly at the Coventry players after Rasmus Hojlund scored the winning penalty in the shoot-out, an action which has been roundly criticised and condemned.

It even drew the ire of Brentford striker and notorious wind-up merchant Neal Maupay, who wrote on X, external: "Just for the record, not even I would do this."

  15. Reaction to FA Cup semi win a disgrace - Ten Hagpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 23 April

The reaction to Manchester United's FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City has been "embarrassing" and "a disgrace", says manager Erik ten Hag.

United have been widely criticised after relinquishing a 3-0 lead against the Championship side before winning on penalties.

Coventry had a late goal ruled out for a marginal offside by the video assistant referee in extra time.

"Football is about results," Ten Hag said. "We made it to the final and deserved it.

"We lost control for 20 minutes and were very lucky in the end but we made it to the final. That is a huge achievement."

Ten Hag's lost the plot, can see no way in which he stays on beyond the season, even if United somehow win the FA Cup.

    Martin

Ten Hag is evidently too fragile to be a manager at this level. He bites and whinges at every comment he doesn’t agree with, and has embarrassed himself beyond repair with his assessment of United’s performance against Coventry.

    Otis

No. It is Ten Hag who is the disgrace. The more he speaks the further from reality he gets. The problem is him & its been demonstrated multiple occasions.

  18. 'Nottingham Forest wrong to criticise referees'published at 12:33 British Summer Time 23 April

Manchester United v Sheffield United (Wednesday, 20.00 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has said Nottingham Forest were wrong to publicly criticise the integrity of Premier League officials following their defeat to Everton on Sunday.

"You can't do that," said Ten Hag. "You can agree, you can disagree.

"The handball from Wan-Bissaka [against Coventry] is wrong, a mistake, but you can't question, so I will not do. It's not good for the game. We should respect the referee and this is no respect."

  19. 'Antony was provoked, but should not do it'published at 12:30 British Summer Time 23 April

Manchester United v Sheffield United (Wednesday, 20.00 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has said that Antony was wrong to celebrate in front of Coventry City's players after United's FA Cup win on Sunday, but says the Brazilian was provoked by members of the Coventry side.

"He was [provoked] and should not react like this. You have not seen the provocation, only the reaction, but he should not do it.

"I've also seen Harry Maguire. We should acknowledge the performance of Coventry, coming back at 70 minutes when we dominated the game. The game must be closed, but the return from their side was very good."

  20. 'The comments are a disgrace'published at 12:27 British Summer Time 23 April

Manchester United v Sheffield United (Wednesday, 20.00 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag is asked by BBC Sport's Simon Stone whether he can understand the negative reaction to the FA Cup semi-final, despite them beating Coventry on penalties.

    "No. Absolutely not."

    Why?

"You asked the question: 'is it embarrassing?' No, the reaction from you was embarrassing. It is the comments. Top football is about results, we made it to a final and we deserved it not only by this game but also the other games.

"We lost control for 20 minutes, we also had bad luck, 3-2, 3-3. We were very lucky in the end, it is clear. Penalties was very good and we made it to the final, it is a huge achievement. Twice, in two years, is magnificent. For me as a manager, four cup finals in four years.

    "The comments are a disgrace."
