The Football News Show: How Manchester United can make Old Trafford a fortress once more

Sports psychologist Dr Gillian Cook has described how Manchester United can go about getting the fear factor back at Old Trafford, after suffering several heavy defeats under Erik ten Hag.

“What Man United need to do moving forward, is get back to that fortress mentality, that siege mentality," she told the BBC's Football News show.

"One of the biggest motivators in life is a sense of injustice, a sense of proving people wrong. How do we prove the doubters wrong? So it’s for the players, the manager and his coaching staff to come together, to talk about what do we need to do moving forward.

"How do we want to define ourselves? What are Man United all about? Why are we here? What’s our collective mission? And then for the players to come out with sheer focus on that and only that, to go out and play well. What I think we’re seeing at the minute is when the players are at Old Trafford, and I think we saw this at the weekend, we’re starting to see fear creeping in. And when fear happens, your mind goes all the wrong places."

  2. 'Modern players want more passion' - McCarthypublished at 09:06 British Summer Time

Former Manchester United assistant coach Benni McCarthy has spoken out against Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag amid his uncertain future at Old Trafford.

McCarthy said Ten Hag does not show enough passion compared to other coaches.

"In modern football, I believe that players want to see a bit more passion in their coach," McCarthy is quoted as telling Portuguese outlet ZEROZERO, external.

"They need to feel that the coach is with them and willing to fight alongside them.

"Tactically, I feel that Erik is at the top. He lacks a bit of that fire, that passion. That's where we differ, him and I."

McCarthy added that if other players in the squad emulated the passion of Portuguese duo Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, it would be easier for the team to succeed.

"If some of the Manchester United players had what Bruno [Fernandes] and Diogo [Dalot] have, it would have been easier to achieve good results," he added.

"They both trained with incredible concentration, giving everything they had. Some of the others didn't do the same.

"This ended up limiting United's progress, because some players weren't training to the best of their ability.

"Even in games, the data showed us that some players were at their peak performance and others a little below."

McCarthy worked under Ten Hag at Old Trafford before departing in June.

May's FA Cup final win over Man City has been credited as saving Erik ten Hag's job with Manchester United

Erik ten Hag won the Carabao Cup in his first season with Manchester United and then the FA Cup in his second term, but nearly lost his job over the club's poor league performances.

United were eighth last season, their worst Premier League finish, and are currently 11th in the table after two wins from six games.

"If you lose your faith, you lose everything," he said in an interview with Sky Sports. "We have to keep going and stick to the plan.

"For a long period, we are in transition at Manchester United. From the moment I came in, we knew we had to change. We had to replace some older players.

"Our choice was to bring young players in and that takes time to get the messages on board, to get a game model on board and to introduce a new culture. That takes time.

"In the meantime, you have to win and I think we have proven in the last two years that we win.

"I've proven in my career that always I will win. The last six years I have eight trophies."

  6. 'Nothing for me to panic about' - Ten Hagpublished at 08:42 British Summer Time

    Manchester United

Manchester United look set to stick with manager Erik ten Hag for matches against Porto and Aston Villa this week, despite their demoralising defeat against Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ten Hag has endured a poor start to the season, which has left United 13th in the Premier League.

"Nothing is easy, but this is nothing for me to panic about," he told Sky in an interview which took place on Monday and has been released today. "We can sort [the problems] out, this team can sort this out."

Asked if he thinks he will still be in his job if the next two games go badly, Ten Hag said: "I'm not thinking about it, I'm not anxious.

"We created a togetherness in the summer with the ownership and the leadership.

"We made this agreement, and we were all behind it. We know the strategy [is to bring in] young players in a transition period.

"They also know in May in all my last six seasons there were always trophies and that is what we are aiming for."

Beleaguered Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be speaking to the media from Portugal this evening before his side's Europa League game against FC Porto.

Before that United will be holding a training session at Carrington, which will be open to cameras for the first 15 minutes.

It will give everyone a chance to assess Ten Hag's mood, although what we will actually glean is open to doubt.

We will know if Kobbie Mainoo is there though.

Mainoo was substituted during the first-half of Sunday's defeat by Tottenham with what he indicated was a hamstring injury.

He was due to have a scan on Monday but so far there has been no update from United.

Intelligent performance from Arsenal. Got the two goals and never really looked like conceding. Very sensible play all round. Hopefully Timber wasn’t taken off for an injury and it was just a precaution.

Newcastle booked their place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup with a routine victory over AFC Wimbledon thanks to Fabian Schar's penalty.

The Magpies were awarded the spot-kick on the stroke of half-time of the rescheduled third-round tie at St James' Park after Miguel Almiron was fouled by Joe Pigott.

Referee Darren Bond only gave the penalty after lengthy consultation with his assistant and Schar calmly stroked the ball beyond visiting goalkeeper Owen Goodman.

Newcastle will face Chelsea at St James' Park in the fourth round on 30 October.

The margin of victory may have been just a goal but Newcastle monopolised the possession and chances against their League Two opponents in a relatively low-key match.

Almiron, Harvey Barnes and Sean Longstaff all went close for Eddie Howe's side while Wimbledon failed to register a single shot on target.

Inter Milan cruised to their first Champions League win of the season with a fine victory over Red Star Belgrade.

Hakan Calhanoglu gave his side an 11th-minute lead with a fine curling free-kick that went in off the post.

Former Stoke and West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic doubled Inter's lead in the 59th minute with a simple finish after Mehdi Taremi won the ball high up the pitch and played in the 35-year-old.

Taremi also pinched the ball in a dangerous area in the 71st minute and set up substitute Lautaro Martinez for the home side's third.

Forward Taremi then got the goal he deserved late on by chipping in a penalty after Martinez was brought down in the penalty area.

Inter, who made seven changes from their Serie A win over Undinese, drew 0-0 with Manchester City in their Champions League opener last month.

Red Star Belgrade are still waiting for a league-phase win after losing 2-1 to Benfica in September.

  16. Lewandowski scores twice as Barca thrash Young Boyspublished at 07:33 British Summer Time

Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Barcelona comprehensively beat Young Boys in the Champions League.

Lewandowski struck after eight minutes for the hosts, poking home Raphinha's ball across the box at the back post.

Barca doubled their lead as Brazil forward Raphinha netted the rebound from Pedri's blocked shot.

The La Liga leaders continued to dominate as Inigo Martinez added another goal three minutes later, heading in from close range after Pedri's pinpoint free-kick.

Six minutes into the second half Barca found the back of the net once more, with Martinez's header back across goal prodded in by Lewandowski.

Joel Monteiro's strike hit the crossbar in the away side's best chance of the match.

Young Boys' misery was compounded in the 81st minute when Mohamed Ali Camara turned Alejandro Balde's cross into his own net.

Monteiro thought he had a goal back for Young Boys in stoppage time but his low finish was ruled out for offside following a video assistant referee (VAR) check.

The Swiss champions remain winless after losing 3-0 to Aston Villa in their opener.

'It's very difficult for us to get to that level' - Rodgers

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers insists he will not change his European approach despite suffering an embarrassing 7-1 Champions League defeat at Borussia Dortmund.

The Germans repeatedly breached the Scottish champions' defence and ruthlessly punished their visitors, scoring five times in the first half alone.

The defeat is the third seven-goal loss the Celtic manager has endured in the competition after heavy losses to Barcelona and Paris St-Germain - no other coach has suffered more than one.

While Rodgers says his side "always have to adapt" against this calibre of opposition, he conceded that "sometimes the quality just breaks through that".

Speaking on TNT Sports, the 51-year-old added: "Will we camp in and just wait? No, we won't do that. We know it'll be difficult at times.

"Tonight, we just gave it away too easy and we got punished."

Celtic’s unbeaten start to the season came to a shuddering halt as they were taught a Champions League lesson by a rampant Borussia Dortmund inspired by the electric Karim Adeyemi.

Daizen Maeda cancelled out Emre Can’s early penalty in a frantic start, but it proved to be the briefest of respites for the Scottish champions.

Adeyemi ran riot with a hat-trick, with another spot-kick from Serhou Guirassy helping the home side to a 5-1 half-time lead.

Guirassy struck again after the break and Felix Nmecha completed the rout with the seventh goal.

The victory sets Dortmund up to take on Real Madrid next in a rerun of last season’s final, while Brendan Rodgers' Celtic will have to improve drastically when they head to Italy to take on Atalanta in two weeks time.

Phil Foden scored and got an assist as Manchester City claimed a comfortable first Champions League win of the season at Slovan Bratislava.

The England midfielder has struggled to find the form that saw him named PFA Player of the Season last year, but he made the most of only his second start this term.

After Ilkay Gundogan had scored his first goal since his return to City with a deflected strike in the eighth minute, Foden opened his own account for the campaign with a composed finish into the bottom corner seven minutes later.

City then hit the woodwork three times - through Jeremy Doku, Foden and Gundogan - as they continued to dominate, before Erling Haaland grabbed his 11th of the season just before the hour mark, taking the ball past goalkeeper Dominik Takac to slot home.

Foden then cleverly flicked the ball through for substitute James McAtee to get his first City goal in the 74th minute.

"All of us are so happy for him," said boss Pep Guardiola said of 21-year-old McAtee. "He's adorable and all the guys love him.

"For him, it will be a good boost. We want to make him feel like, 'you are part of that group, you are able to play'. Hopefully today can help him in that."

Only heroics from Slovan stopper Takac denied City further goals, but the victory was their first in the revamped Champions League format after drawing at home to Inter Milan in their opening fixture.

    Arsenal 2-0 PSG

    Kai HavertzImage source, Getty Images

It took a while to establish what position Kai Havertz was best suited to but, now established as a striker at Arsenal, he is flourishing.

The German international scored his fifth goal in nine games on Tuesday to help the Gunners beat Paris St-Germain 2-0 in the Champions League.

After being linked with moves for strikers Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen in the summer, Havertz is showing he could provide the firepower Arsenal need this season to fight for trophies both at home and in Europe.

"He has been unbelievable," enthused Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta after the PSG win.

"His football brain, the way he understands space, timing, the way he brings people together and his work ethic is incredible.

"Every time he is around the box he is a real threat and he is one of the main players at the moment."
