Since defeat on the opening day of the season Salford have been flying, and so far, living up to those pre-season promotion expectations.

Karl Robinson’s side grinded out a hard-fought win against Newport County in the week thanks to a second goal of the season for defender Adebola Oluwo, making it three wins on the bounce for The Ammies.

Walsall on the other hand not so much. Two wins and two losses for Mat Sadler’s Saddlers will leave supporters wondering which side will turn up this lunchtime, but Sadler said he “wasn’t disappointed” by the performance of his players as they were beaten by Grimsby on Tuesday, so there’s that.

In conclusion, it’s a little pointless trying to make predictions when the season is only four games old, but football is wonderful, and therefore we will continue doing it.

Everton loanee Martin Sherif makes his debut for Rotherham as they make four amendments to their starting line-up from last week's defeat by Cardiff City.

Marvin Kaleta, Joe Rafferty and Joe Powell join Sherif in the XI.

Lenny Agbaire and Zak Jules don't make the trip but Dru Yearwood and Ar'jany Martha are available from the bench.

It's almost half a new starting line-up for Wigan as they make five changes.

Paul Mullin, Baba Adeeko and Jensen Weir move to the bench, but Luke Robinson and Tobias Brenan miss out on the trip.

In their places are Dara Costelloe, Christian Saydee, Joseph Hungbo, Tyrese Francois and Fraser Murray.

    Rotherham v Wigan (12:30 BST)

Boss Matt Hamshaw on new signing Martin Sherif, further business and Wigan at home.

Rotherham's start to the season was a winning one but since then, it's not been so easy.

They lost their following two games - albeit to the top two, Stevenage and Cardiff - and while Millers boss Matt Hamshaw said he's not been "surprised" by Rotherham's performances thus far, they've left him feeling "disappointed".

"It probably is going to be an up-and-down season, however, that doesn't say I want it to be," Hamshaw told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"With the turnover of players, the things we want to achieve... it's going to take some of these players a little while to get that connection.

"We've seen it in little snippets for 20 or 30 minutes along the way, however, that doesn't win you football matches. We've got to sustain it longer, we've got to be more consistent."

Rotherham will be looking to stop the rot when they face Wigan Athletic in the early afternoon kick-off, but the Lactics are experiencing their own rollercoaster season so far (W2, L2) and won't want it to tip towards the losing end of the scale.

Newport make a couple of adjustments to the side beaten at home by Salford on Tuesday.

Michael Spellman and Cameron Antwi get the nod ahead of James Clarke and Cameron Evans, who are among the substitutes. Matt Baker skippers the side with Clarke on the bench.

There's a brace of changes for MK Dons with no Joe Tomlinson, while Rushian Hepburn-Murphy is on the bench. Tomlinson has a foot injury which he picked up in the midweek draw at Crawley.

Aaron Nemane and Marvin Ekpiteta come in for their first league starts of the season.

  5. Exiles tough start to get tougher?published at 12:17 British Summer Time 23 August

Newport County v MK Dons (12:30 BST)

New season, new managers, but very different outlooks and ambitions.

MK Dons' appointment of multiple promotion-winning boss Paul Warne just before the end of last season was always a signal of intent, as has been their considerable investment in the likes of Will Collar, Callum Paterson and Aaron Collins.

With that has come an unbeaten start and just the one goal conceded so far.

Up against that are a Newport side who have seemingly been on the slide in recent seasons with finishes of 15th, 18th and 22nd.

David Hughes is the Exiles fifth manager in under four years with the former Manchester United youth coach in his first senior role.

Defeats by Grimsby and Salford have put them under some early pressure, and with Cambridge United to come after today, Hughes realises they face a huge challenge.

"We were aware when the fixtures were announced that it was a really, really difficult start - based on the teams expected to be around the top six or seven we've probably played three or four of those," the Newport boss told BBC Radio Wales.

You feel it won't get any easier for the Welshmen today...

  6. Both sides make triple changepublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 23 August

Nahki Wells and Christ Makosso return for Luton Town as part of their trio of changes.

Lasse Nordas leads the line to complete the set.

Gideon Kodua, Cohen Bramall and Jerry Yates are all available from the bench.

Visitors Cardiff City make a triple change of their own.

Chris Willock, David Turnbull and Callum Robinson all move into the XI as Joel Colwill and Yousef Salech rotate to the bench.

Winger Ollie Tanner's ankle injury rules him out of the squad for four months, but Perry Ng makes his comeback to the matchday squad.

  7. Cardiff putting in the work for Luton clashpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 23 August

    Luton v Cardiff (12:30 BST)

Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy details the injury to Ollie Tanner and previews Luton.

Luton Town and Cardiff City are both exactly where they planned to be upon their re-entry to the third division - in and around the top.

Just one point separates the two sides but it's Cardiff who have a chance of taking a seat at the top should they defeat their fellow relegated club and Stevenage don't prevail over Huddersfield.

It's a tasty prospect and the Bluebirds have done their homework in order to put themselves in a good position.

"We'll need to improve again on Saturday to give ourselves a chance to win the against a team of Luton's calibre," Bluebirds boss Brian Barry-Murphy told BBC Sport Wales.

"We believe we are capable of doing that. We've done a lot of work on Luton, we're clear on their strengths and we respect them.

"For us, the focus is to give ourselves a chance to play as well as we can to try and win the game."

League Two is left with just the one side boasting a 100% record and Crewe Alexandra face a big examination of their credentials at fifth-placed Gillingham at 15:00 (BST).

MK Dons have the chance to push themselves up to second place with a win at Newport County (12:30 BST), while the side currently second, Grimsby Town, visit winless Accrington Stanley later.

Cheltenham Town's search for a first point of the campaign continues with the visit of Barnet to Whaddon Road.

The lunchtime meeting between Luton Town and Cardiff City means we could have new League One leaders before the 15:00 (BST) games get under way.

Current table-toppers Stevenage have taken everyone by surprise with their 100% start, but will face a stern test at pre-season promotion favourites Huddersfield Town, who could also find themselves top of the pile by the end of play today.

At the bottom, Peterborough United and Plymouth Argyle will look to get off the mark at the fifth time of asking with the Posh at home to Bradford City and the Pilgrims hosting Blackpool.

    Ahoy-hoy.

Perfect starts and pointless openings - a few of those records could come to an end today.

It's just another quiet afternoon in the EFL.

Thanks for joining us. We'll get going shall we?
