A wild attempt one moment, a lovely finish the next.

Darwin Nunez silences Southampton fans who have been goading him with a neat finish past Alex McCarthy after a mis-kick by Jan Bednarek.

    The holders have the lead!

    Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

    Francis Benali
Former Southampton defender on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

The centre-backs for Southampton are positioned exactly like they were under Russell Martin. But goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is kicking the ball long more which is getting the team forward a lot quicker than we have seen whole season.

    Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

That's a lovely sliding tackle by Jan Bednarek to prevent Darwin Nunez from getting a shot away inside the box after Cody Gakpo's threaded pass. It's greeted by a roar from the home fans who like what they are seeing from their side so far.

Mateta is a bit like Peter Crouch, because he's tall you think he's just a target man. But he's actually brilliant with the ball at his feet and a class finisher.

    Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

The biggest cheer of the night as Darwin Nunez goes from glory from 20 yards. It's a wild attempt. He cannot use the conditions as an excuse for that.

  10. 'Not many things to talk about'published at 20:17 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December

    Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Chris Waddle
Former Newcastle & England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Aside from the goal there have not been very many things to talk about. In a quarter-final cup tie you expect end to end football, excitement and a lot of goal action but we've not seen it.

Why is it always got to be players like Gyokeres or Isak with Arsenal? Why not take a punt on someone a little more affordable and gettable? Pretty much anybody would be better than they have right now.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:17 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December

    Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

Nathan Collins dallies on the ball too much and Anthony Gordon takes the ball off him. The Brentford defender knows he would lose that race and hauls him down for a yellow card.

A lovely touch by Jean-Philippe Mateta and he is away from his marker. He gets into the box and tries to backheel into the path of Ismaila Sarr, but the Arsenal defence gets back to clear.

    Newcastle 1-0 Brentford

    Chris Waddle
Former Newcastle & England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's positive play from Anthony Gordon. He tries to take his full back on, has two or three goes at it and eventually wins a corner out of it.

Eddie Howe is watching something on a tablet with one of his coaches. I noticed someone else on the Newcastle bench with a denim jacket. Seems strange football bench attire.

Having watched Arsenal on Saturday, and again so far tonight, I can’t believe how often players take a few steps forward only to then stand on the ball and bring it to a standstill. There is absolutely no pace or urgency. A disciplined pub side could defend against this.
