Southampton have signed winger Ryan Fraser on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Newcastle which has allowed him to join the Saints on a two-year deal.

Fraser played a significant role in the team’s promotion from the Championship during a season-long loan deal from Newcastle last term.

He has made 173 Premier League appearances across his spells with Bournemouth and Newcastle, as well as being capped 26 times for Scotland.

  2. 'Palace will still get Guehi figure or perhaps more down the line'published at 21:51 British Summer Time 30 August

    Michael Brown

The money Crystal Palace would have got for Marc Guehi is safe with him. They have managed to keep him and they will still get figure another time down the line.

Without being disrespectful to Newcastle I think bigger clubs will come in for him and perhaps even offer more.

Eddie Howe is probably in limbo at the minute thinking, 'Why can't we get anybody in?' and 'Why can't we get anything over the line?'

When you look at his targets they have been really good targets, players who have been successful in the Premier League and that is what he is trying to create at Newcastle. He's trying to attack the Champions League places again.

It will be interesting to see the reaction if they don't get anything over the line in the next couple of hours.

Palace play with a back three which may now look like: Guehi, Chalobah, Lacroix. Not too shabby I’d say.

Guehi was the player of the tournament for England in the Euros, but he's going to be staying put at Palace.

The homegrown players rule in transfers is the worst one I have ever come across in football, certainly in the last 10-15 years. The idea that you have to sell homegrown players to balance the books is awful.

It is a serious rule that we need to take a hard look at. When you think of academies trying to produce players, fans latch onto that when they get into the first team, and all of a sudden the model is going to be producing them knowing they will be sold in five or six years.

I am happy for McTominay but as a fan, sorry to see him go. I think he will be more appreciated and valued in his "new home" than he was by United's current "manager".

    Mike, South Africa

Slightly surprised any United fan is disappointed in McTominay's departure. OK, he scored a few goals, but when it came to his actual role in the side he was bang average. The fact that he was viewed by so many as a key player for the club is indicative of just how far United have fallen behind.

Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth hailed Manuel Ugarte as one of the "very best" ball-winning midfielders in the world.

The Uruguayan international has joined United from French club Paris St-Germain and is their fifth signing of the transfer window.

"Manuel was another of our primary targets for this summer," Ashworth said.

"He is among the very best ball-winning midfield players in the world and has an excellent record at both club and international level. His qualities, experience and passion will be a great complement to our strong group of midfielders.

"Manuel is a player we’ve watched closely, and we are excited to see the positive impact he will make on the pitch and in the dressing room as we continue to strive for success."

Most Wolves supporters will be happy with this transfer window. Early doors signings, then nothing, then a flurry of activity in the final hours. They’ve recruited strength, future potential and solved the issue of squad depth. With Guedes’ form suddenly improving, our season looks very promising.

In the Premier League when you look at settled teams and the teams that have been so successful over recent years, the likes of Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool – they haven’t done a massive amount of business.

They quite often get their business done early and then plug the gaps.

Quite often promoted clubs are scrambling around for ages desperately trying to get players in.

Birmingham are crossing their fingers Fulham can pull off a deal for Lyon wide-man Ernest Nuamah.

A number of clubs, including Everton and Nottingham Forest, have been linked with Nuamah.

    However, Fulham are pushing hard.

If they do that deal, it would raise Birmingham's chances of signing Jay Stansfield.
